(More customer reviews)The Garmin Rino 520HCx is a pretty good tough GPS for any trail type use (Capable not not recommended for automotive use). It is bigger and heavy than many similar GPS units (due to the 2 way radio transmitter), but not bad. Same size/shape of other Garmin Rinos (Rino 110, Rino 120, etc). The screen is fairly bright and colorful but not as good as Garmins of similar cost (I know not as good as Garmin GPSMAP 62S or Garmin Oregon 550). It does not have as much detail or colors as other screens.
Pros:
-If you want a GPS and two way radio all in one, this or similar Garmin Rino is a great option.
-You have the ability to transmit location data (and on some units text messages) to other Rino units, very handy and cool IF you have multiple Rino units
-I think it is easy to use (though I did have a Rino 120 for years and am used to it)
- ++Love having an actual electric compass and barometer, other lower Rhinos do not. (LOVE BUILT IN COMPASSES!)
Cons:
- **NOTE same for MOST GPS's unless otherwise specified....BASE MAPS SUCK! The map Garmin ships preloaded on it is basically worthless. *Maybe* have most of the interstates...don't bet on having anything else on your map. YOU WILL NEED TO PAY ~$100 for a city or topo map pack.
-Comes only with Lithium rechargeable pack...Gives you good battery life and good for some, but I do not want to bring a extra charger with me on hiking or camping trip. I would much rather just bring multi use AA's, but to use regular batteries you must by a $30 alternate battery pack
So overall I would recommend it best for rough camping, hiking, or off roading where you would use a tough GPS with a two way radio. You can do all kinds of cool and handy things with more than one Rino unit.
IF YOU DON'T NEED THE TWO WAY RADIO, I would suggest the Garmin GPSMAP 62S or Oregon/Montana/Dakota. All are smaller, lighter, and have more colorful screens. Overall would still recommend this unit.
