(More customer reviews)I would have rated 4 1/2 stars, just for the minor Cons below, but couldn't, so rated the full 5. Can't attest to the interference with a wireless network, because I'm not there yet but....
Pros:
1. Renaming handsets to location, e.g., Bedroom, Cellar, 1st Floor.
2. Can turn main ringer off on base or handset (in the bedroom, for instance), but still use Transfer Call and Intercom features to that hanset. VERY HANDY FOR LARGE OR MULTIFLOOR HOMES. (Ring is also adjustable.)
3. Phone book. Set it up on the base and send to all the handsets.
4. Adds a "1" to long distance numbers from Caller ID just by pushing the */tone key.
5. Listen to messages from any handset.
6. Audible "Message Indicator." Can turn on or off.
7. Lighted keys (on handsets) and displays.
8. Easy to find the instructions for all the features in the manual. (The PDF manual from Uniden has hyperlinks from the Table of Contents and Index.)
9. Can set handset to "Answer" when picked up from charge base. Handy for the "transfer call" feature so there is only one button to push when you pick up. (Otherwise you have to push green button twice if it's a transferred call, not just an Intercom call--kind of clumsy for the technophobes in the house--see Cons.)
10. Range is excellent (just under .1 mile at my house in the country), great for those with large yards.
11. Two or more handsets can be used at one time. You don't have to "Transfer" the call, you can pick up and join the call, just like in the old days. (Some systems don't allow this!)
12. Corded (for power outages) and cordless combination.
Cons (non deal-breakers, in my opinion):
1. Ringers could be louder on "high" setting. If you listen to your stereo on the loud side the phone is difficult to hear.
2. No different ring tones on the base.
3. If you have any technophobes in the house it may be difficult to get them to utilize all the features with you, because of the menus and such. (That is probably more of a personal con than that of the phone!)
4. One or two too many buttons to push to delete a Caller ID number. (Do you really need an "Are you sure?" message for such a simple decision?)
5. Can't delete the Caller ID numbers from all the phones at once. (Although before I got this system that was the case anyway.)
6. Not wall mountable. (Not an issue for me, but I wouldn't let it be a deal-breaker. Why does the corded base HAVE to be on the kitchen wall, for instance.)
I have already recommended this system to friends. Wish I had gotten to my mother before she got the VTech IA5874, which doesn't allow multiple handset use and calls have to be transferred from one handset to the next (plus, no corded base).

It's easy to program and you can easily add or lock out those drivers you no longer want to keep listening to. It is a little limited to the number of frequencies you program in. So if you follow the trucks, Nation Wide and Cup series you'll have to do some reprograming between races. Overall though I think this is well worth the money I spent.

Now that I have the scanner and have been using it for a couple of weeks I must say it is worth every dollar spent on it. The sound output is very clear and loud. The scanner itself is very solid. It is a bit cumbersome to program manually and the product manual is very poor but I relied upon the forum and frequency database at www.radioraference.com The users in the forum was very helpful and I had the scanner up and running in two evenings. The Uniden software that comes with the scanner is very limited and I would suggest that you purchase the ARC250 basic software. This scanner is a must buy for any die hard scanner hobbyist.

(More customer reviews)Whether you buy this as a toy or a tool, this is not a device that is going to spring out of its box ready to use. I consider myself fairly experienced in electronics and radio-related stuff and it took me several obsessive evenings of tinkering with the settings, reading and re-reading the manual, and searching through a half dozen online forums and reference sites dedicated to just this scanner model to get things set up properly.
Most folks who own this scanner are happy to share the files they have created of their own metropolitan areas (I found and downloaded complete Baltimore County files in a few minutes after subscribing BCD396T Yahoo Group) and with the included data cable every feature of the scanner can be controlled and modified from the computer screen.
Now that the unit is completely set up, it works exactly the way I want it to. This is a great portable scanner if you have digital trunking systems in your area, or anticipate your local systems going digital in the next few years. The back-light works great and lights up the buttons along with the display, which makes the scanner as easy to use in the dark as in full daylight.
The included antenna is a wide-band scanner antenna, so expect to have to purchase a band-specific antenna for the unit if you're mostly concerned with listening to 700 or 800 MHz trunking bands in your area and want the best possible performance on those bands.
If you have no digital systems in your area, you may want to check out some of the less expensive alternatives without digital capability such as the UNIDEN BC-246T Compact Hand Held Scanner.

(More customer reviews)This is a very nice scanner with alot of features,up to 9000 channels stored in groups instead of banks, fire tone out, band scope etc. The biggest drawback is no printed manual. I agree with the other review, that this is very inconvienient.UNIDEN gives you a CD with instructions, which means your chained to your desk, or you have to lug a laptop around all the time.I use this scanner in my vehical, so it would have been nice to have a manual to keep in the glove box for quik reference. To find alot of the things you need to know requires going through many menus and sub-menus, and once you do find what your looking for, you had better remember where you found it, because there are so many menus it's easy to get lost. I wish UNIDEN would at least offer a manual that we could purchase for a few bucks, though after paying 220.00 for the scanner we shouldn't have to. Would have given 5 stars otherwise.

Uniden Digital Mobile Scanner with 25,000 Channels and GPS Support (BCD996XT) Review

(More customer reviews)This scanner is the top of the line for scanning enthusiasts. It is, hands-down, the best scanner ever made. That's a pretty big compliment, I know. But in more than 40 years of "monitoring", this is the most usable, flexible and featured radio I have ever had. It includes digital (P25) capability.
However - if you are expecting instant results or plug-and-play operation, this is not for you. This radio has a learning curve and is truly a hobbyist radio. Having said that, if you are willing to invest the time in learning how the radio works, you will be rewarded with an excellent and enjoyable experience.
For folks new to the hobby, or those who just want to listen to things without programming and details - get Uniden's Home Patrol. It's as simple as putting in your zip code - and you'll be listening. For the BCD996XT (and its handheld relative, the BCD396XT), it will require programming, using the included cable to connect to a computer. You will have to get the software for it - which ranges from Freescan (absolutely free) or Proscan and other paid-for programs. You will also need a source of information - RadioReference.com is the best place to get it.
Once you do get the programming down, it's a joy to operate and listen to. One of the limitations modern scanners used to have was bank and channel - everything had to fit in the "blocks" of channels. The DMA (Direct Memory Access) architechture blows those limitations away. Once you have the concept of "systems" and "groups" down, it makes scanning ridiculously flexible. The downside is that you can have so much programmed in your radio that you need a printed guide to remember what is where for the less used things (and the software allows you to print those guides).
I do not use the GPS capabilities, but it's a brilliant concept. Once programmed, the radio can turn systems on and off based on the location your GPS provides. For folks travelling a regular route or commute, for instance, this would switch things on an off according to where they are travelling, such as different highway patrol channels, county sheriff departments or city fire and police. The possibilities are endless (and this is all available in the handheld BCD396XT as well).
If you have deep pockets, do add the handheld BCD396XT to your collection also - having two radios programmed exactly the same is a great sanity saver - they are nearly identical in function, having only slight differences on the keypads.
Either way, this is the best scanner type radio available. There are Radio Shack models that come close, but the Uniden edges them out because of a less complex display. If you don't need the digital capabilities, you can go with the non-digital BCT15X for about 300 cheaper. But when digital comes to your locality, you will be buying a new scanner.

(More customer reviews)I've owned scanners for the last 30 years. This is by far the best one I've ever had. It's incredibly powerful. I purchased it for my home as I've got a handheld BCT-245 in my truck. It's reception is so much better than the BCT-245 I'm going to buy another one of these for my truck.
Don't try to manually program it. Get some software off the internet (I use ARC, which interfaces with an online site) and in just a few minutes you're all programmed and ready to go!

Uniden Public Safety Receiver (Home Patrol- 1) Review

(More customer reviews)The Uniden Home Patrol-1 is an amazing piece of technology. A touch screen scanner that requires very little user input, and has the entire US frequency database in its memory. For the most part, the HP-1 make scanning as simple as can be. You hook up the scanner to your PC, and run the Uniden Sentinel Software. The software downloads the latest frequency database from RadioReference. You upload the the database to the scanner, and you're good to go. Just enter your Zip Code, City, or GPS coordinates, and the HP-1 will scan all the agencies in your area. You can even hook up an optional GPS unit to automatically follow your location. You set the range of the scanner from 0-30 miles to limit how far away the agencies are that the scanner will attempt to scan. You can also select the type of agencies you wish to listen to. I find the "location" setting to be hit or miss. It seems to think that towns that are 40 miles from me, are actually less than 1 mile from me. It also thinks agencies in my own town are more than 10 miles away. This is due to the database, not the scanner. The database has been getting updated on a daily basis, to get it more accurate and up to date. I find that setting up your own "Favorites Lists" works well in listening to what you want to.
As for the hardware itself, the HP-1 is a very solid performer. The receiver has great sensitivity and selectivity. I've listened to APCO-25 digital systems, EDACS, and Motorola analog trunking systems. All of them were configured correctly without any user input. Audio quality is good, but not great. It is about what I expected from a very small speaker. The small SMA duck antenna performs surprisingly well, especially on UHF. The touch screen is bright and easy to use. Battery life with the included 2300mAh batteries is good. I get over 8 hours on a single charge. The scanner is capable of replaying and recording transmissions. A very cool feature. The scanner also comes with a home charger/adapter, car charger/adapter, and home stand. The stand is a nice touch. The HomePatrol-1 is a nice addition to my collection of scanners. People that don't like to program their scanners, or would like to use it in different areas, will probably enjoy it also.
