(More customer reviews)I purchased this system based on reviews I read at a major retailer's website and here at Amazon. I wanted a home theater system without a DVD player which would offer flexibility. This system certainly offers performance and flexibility for the price. Many features and easy setup.
There are some easy and economical things we did to improve the sound. First, because this system allows you to upgrade the speaker wire, we bought 16 gauge speaker wire from a major discount chain for the center, front and rear channel speakers. We got 14 gauge speaker wire for the subwoofer (thicker wire passes more current to the sub and has improved the performance of the 8-inch woofer). We spent $14 for a coaxial cable at another discount store which carries the digital signal from the DVD player to the Onkyo receiver--this improved EVERYTHING--movies and music. We found speaker stands at a major discount chain for $78--speakers sound much better when they have a strong/rigid support. This may sound like stuff an audiophile would do to a $5000 audio system, but it all is cheap, easy and effective. Sound improved by about 45%.
We were surprised at the tuner in the Onkyo receiver--we're using a small Terk powered FM antenna and getting very good FM stereo reception in our hilly river community. All in all, for the small cost of this system, we're enjoying home theater greatly. We might spend a little to get a new sub at some time, but for now we're really happy.

It arrived on schedule and took me a couple days to read through the manual (just do it) and play with the various settings before the setup was close to what I wanted. A few minor tweeks after that and this thing rocks. I watched the Super Bowl in HiDef surround and was glad I didn't spend the money for the tickets. It was like being there. When you hear people behind you yelling "Defense" or cheering as Eli threw the winning touchdown pass, it makes watching the game more fun. There are enough settings on the tuner to satisfy anyone. Whether it's watching a DVD, listening to the stero or playing XBox, this system can make the experience more fun. Well worth the money. Read the manual. The set up is not for the faint of heart. I'd recommend this to anyone.

Wireless 5.8GHz Speaker Amplifier Rear Channel Digital Audio Link for Surround Speakers Review

The funny thing is, not only was it not working, but it had been obviously opened, tampered with and the box had an RMA # on it and said "BAD". :) A quick call to shoptronics fixed the issue with a brand new and functional system sent to my door within a few days. So for the most part, I'm happy.
As for the item, it does what it says - transmits two channels of audio wirelessly. However, regardless of placement of either pieces, sometimes a loud "POP!!" and smaller crackles occur. Also, regardless of volume or signal tuning, there's an audible "hiss" sound - not good for rear surrounds just a few feet away from your ears. Maybe that's due to AC line noise, but I'm using 16ga THX Monster speaker cable and known-good sattelites, so I know it's not that.
In all, it's a passable trade off for people not having the luxury of running wires under the carpet (i.e. hardwood floors or in an apartment), but I think RadioShack could have made this one a bit better. All of the other alternatives used the very volitile 2.4Ghz range though and seemed to have their own caveats so who knows...

Klipsch iFi Speaker System for iPod Review

I would like to respond to the previous user's review as it is honorable, but innocently false.
I also own the Klipsch Promedia 2.1's and the Klipsch iFi's, but I'm not sure why the previous user had such a difficult time getting his iFi to sound/image better than his Promedias, so let met male this clear: In no way shape or form is the Promedia 2.1 speaker system even remotely close to the quality, finesse and craftsmanship of the Klipsch iFi. The iFi achieves a far higher level of sound clarity and precision, while being more efficient, effective and exquisite. Klipsch tested the iFi to be almost three times louder at the respective maximum SPL while even maintaining a higher discipline of distortion than the Promedias 2.1's. Yes, three times louder with better sound quality. This does not even put them in the same category. That fact alone can whole heartily explain the price difference between them, but allow me to elaborate even further. The iFi's own RSX-3 satellite speakres provide much more impact and fuller and deeper midrange from a stronger, bigger and more capable aluminum driver. The 2.1's sats use a paper cone driver which is smaller and weaker and is held to the baffle with a cheap foam surround. The iFi employs a better, more elaborate titanium horn loaded tweeter that delivers far more sound with greater accuracy than the cheap plastic ones on the 2.1's. The RSX's are far more sophisticated speakers and deliver a sound that is sonically superior and louder than the proimedia satellites. I'm sorry to undermine the previous reviewer, but he is simply wrong.
The subwoofer even divides these two systems further. The 2.1's use a smaller 6.5" woofer with less power in a small enclosure that lacks both depth and proper porting as it emits gobs of port flutter when being pushed hard. The ifi `s subwoofer is a true beast with a full 10Hz lower frequency range, higher SPL, and far less distortion. Please don't get me wrong, the Klispch 2.1's are great speakers and that's exactly why the iFi is also a great system. Because it simply doest just offer the same experience with the addition of an iPod dock for three times the money. It offers you three times the sound quality and, conveniently has an iPod dock. I should also indicate that the remote, while slightly clumsy and small, is the best iPod speaker remote available do to its range.
I would not trade four promedia 2.1 sets for my iFi's
Here are pictures so you can clearly see I have both systems. You can also see the size difference of the subwoofer and the quality difference of the speakers.
Make no mistake, the iFi's trounce the Promeida 2.1's.

This Sony docking station makes the music coming out of my iPod sound fantastic. I tried (and returned to a local store) several other iPod docking stations, including a tin can of a product from iHome, and I couldn't be more pleased that I perservered until I got something I love. I am pleased that I can adjust the treble and bass with precision and that music sounds good at low and high volume and everything inbetween. This sounds every bit as good as a $400 shelf system I used to use for CDs, maybe better. The remote works great and the unit takes up very little space. I recommend it wholeheartedly.

Acoustic Research AW-871 Wireless Stereo Speakers Review

(More customer reviews)Even though my experience with wireless headphones were universally poor -- I once overheard my neighbor's cell phone conversation while listening on wireless headphones -- I was very impressed by the plentiful good reviews for this product and decided to give it a try at Amazon's wonderful low price. Amazon sells this product for up to $75 below the price stores ask.
However, once I got it home, hooked it up and turned on my stereo, my experiences with this set of wireless speakers was an exact replay of my expereince with wireless headphones. I set these up as the rear surround speakers in my living room as part of on my 5.1 system, fixing the speakers only about 25 feet from the transmitter. Even in that brief distance with almost no physical block between them, the left speaker consistently spit out static. The rightt speaker played fine all the time but had an annoying tendency to click while the music was turned off.
This is not what I had in mind for my home stereo! I moved the speakers around (as far as the power cords would go, anyway) and re-situated them, trying to gain greater proximity to the transmitter. This did nothing to improve matters. The transmitter indicated the signal was strong, yet that left speaker continued it staticky way throughout my experiment.
These speakers are easy to set up and easy to get working. You really don't need the instructions if you've had any experience with anything wireless. Still, I consulted the booklet to see if there was anything I was doing wrong. At one point I had the setting on both speakers at "right", so I changed that. No change in the outcome. I also re-set the transmitter from "1" to "2" and even to "3". No change. I moved the speakers again. No change. I consulted the booklet and listened again. Same thing.
Perhaps my experience has something to do with my neighborhood, my home or my neighbors, but my experience was not nearly as good as those reported elsewhere on this page. On the plus side, these speakers sound pretty good for something that barely costs $100 and they are easy to use.
They are portable and can be set up anywhere a power source is near or set up anywhere using battery power. The transmitter is supposed to be good up to 300 feet and I know the speakers in my house received the signal. I simply was not going to pay for a product that resulted in my SACD signal being converted to static.
While the sound the speakers produced was pretty good for something so inexpensive, I was not impressed with them as surround sound speakers. With independent volume controls, they seem like just another set of speakers to me. Compared to the sound I get from my wired surround speakers in another room from my front three speakers, these did not sound much like surround speakers regardless of the amnount of fiddling I did with the volumer controls and transmitter.
Even though this experiment was a failure at my house, I am grateful Amazon accepted my return; not every company on the Web will take back electronics. I wish you better luck with this product than I had.

Soundcast ICO-411 Outcast (Grey) Review

(More customer reviews)I was skeptical at spending this type of $$$ for speakers but I was looking for something I could use in multiple venues, wireless and had good sound quality. The Outcast out-performed my expectations and is worth every dollar. I justified spending the $$$ by realizing that I would not need to purchase an amplifier and install speakers in the Patio area or garage and just saving time in the install was reason enough. Plus, this system works flawlessly with my iPOD as I can goto the previous or next song from the unit at a distance of > 350'. The sound quality has remained constantly impressive even while I use this piece in my garage which is >100' away from the transmitter (Included). I have not tested the 350 avertised range but have not needed to go this far. Also, the battery life is excellent. I have not tested the 10 hour advertised rate, but have used the Outcast at a loud level poolside for ~7 hours without any fade to volume or sound quality. This product is the best on the market and should be at $700 but more importantly, these guys got it right when it comes to wireless quality.

First complaint is that the "audio in" jack snapped it now jiggles around creating static if I can even get it to pick up the feed. The second is the interference with my Wifi network, the transmitter drastically reduced the strength and range of my network. I also use a Sonos system that is also effected by the transmitter. Engineers should be fired, and ill take my money back!

(More customer reviews)When I walked into the Bose store and heard this system playing, I was overwhelmed. The crispness of the sound, frequency range, sound distribution, powerful bass... I immediately asked for a personal demo, and I was even more perplexed when they gave me the regular Bose designed demo where they show you the wonders that this system can do. The surround sound is magnificent, and even if you have a mono or stereo recording it will simulate the surround sound in the greatest way I could have imagined. I couldn't believe that I was listening to a 50's mono record in full surround sound at one point, and it sounded excellent! The demo of how the bass seems to come from the little speakers instead of the subwoofer is also very impressive. You hear the powerful and rich bass coming from this tiny speakers, but when they cover the woofer on the subwoofer you notice the bass is gone, even though it seemed to be coming from the little speakers! Pretty cool stuff. Not to mention these tiny speakers produce a sound that's better than regular speakers that are 10 times the size. Bose really hit a home run with this technology, and if you are considering it you definitely should go for it. I had never listened to music like I do now. It's a totally new experience.
As for the new systems with 6 CD Changer or DVD player, it's your choice. I bought this unit because I just wanted the speakers and a receiver to connect my DVD player/mp3 player/computer to (although it does have a CD player), and this system was great for that, at the best price for a Lifetime system. If you don't have your own DVD player and you want to use it for that you may want to consider the others.
Also, there are newer models of the Lifestyle system that come with some new speakers (jewel) that are even smaller (and more expensive). I tried these new systems and I noticed the small speakers could not produce a sound as crisp and rich as the lifestyle 12 speakers. The sound was much more metallic, like a cymbal, instead of being rich and velvety. If you're trying to decide, don't let this factor influence you in your decision. Just go for the one that's right for your price range and needs. And above all, go visit a Bose store and ask for a demo and listen for yourself!

Yamaha YAS-71BL Front Surround System (Black) Review

(More customer reviews)I've been searching for a simple budget out of the box home audio solution that had great sound, ease of use and set up, all the connections I needed and lastly esthetically pleasing and not an eyesore. I looked at all the recommended budget 5.1 and 7.1 system (Onkyo is the best deal for full 5.1 systems) and was frustrated by the price and the over engineered complexity of them all. Real surround sound would be cool but ultimately I just wanted a simple solution with strong, rich sound and any simulated surround would be nice too. I have a Samsung 630 and love the TV but the sound sucks. This YAS-71 sound bar and sub-woofer really have enhanced my home theater experience tremendously. I want to watch all the movies I've already seen in HD again now just to hear them in fuller sound. My wife even likes it, I don't think she's nearly as intimidated by it as much as 5.1 component systems would.
This unit has 4 audio inputs plus a connector for an ipod dock; 3 of the inputs are digital audio inputs (2 optical, 1 coaxial). 1 RCA audio input. I highly recommend using the digital audio inputs to get the best and clearest simulated surround sound. I have a PS3 (my Blu-Ray player), a Toshiba DVD player and my DVR hooked up to the digital inputs and the Yamaha ipod dock hooked up. The ipod dock works well and you can control the ipod to some extent with the remote, though the screen on the front of the bar gives you very minimal information and control for your ipod. There are times I'd rather just select my ipod manually on the ipod itself. My 3G iphone worked with it as well as a 30 gig ipod. They all sounded great.
I have a very boxy, enclosed small to medium sized living room (12' x 18') in an older home and it's perfect for that environment. At volume level 50 (halfway) it really fills the room up with rich sound, at the higher levels it gets surprisingly loud without distortion and blowout. Though If you have a very open or large contemporary living room I wouldn't recommend this system; I'd go with more powerful true surround system where you could space the speakers out to fit the room. This YAS-71 really works best in a room with defined walls to work off of. I wouldn't expect any true surround sound from the YAS-71 but there are times while watching 5.1 DVDs and Blu-rays I notice that some sounds really feel immersive and you can feel the simulated surround effect. Prices have dropped on these recently, they used to retail for $500-$600 and for around $300 this is an exceptional deal.
Positives:
* Easy to set up, there aren't a bunch of wires to run around your room.
* User friendly. Wife friendly.
* 4 audio inputs (3 digital) plus yamaha ipod connector
* Clear, surprisingly powerful, robust simulated 5.1 sound for such a contained unit.
* Great value for the money if you can find it at or under $300
* Looks nice in front of most HDTVs. It virtually matched my piano finished black Samsung.
* Great for enclosed rooms.Negatives:
* No onscreen information and controls on your TV screen, info is only on the soundbar screen. This does not have any video passthrough. (this hasn't been a problem for me though).
* It might not have have all the audio connections you need. Check your setup.
* All the inputs are on the sub woofer, so keep that in mind, you might need longer cables.
* Remote controlling ipod is very minimal.
* ipod dock sold separately ($50-100)
* Not so good for open areas.
Conclusion:
Powerful, clear sound and a good number of inputs for most needs. A simple solution for better home audio. I couldn't be happier with it.

Bose SL2 wireless surround link - Wireless audio delivery system for rear speakers Review

(More customer reviews)I recently moved to a new house, and didn't want to drill holes in the walls or floor to get the wires to the back of the room. I was somewhat skeptical about this product and concerned with sound quality. However, I'm happy to say there is absolutely no difference between using the SL2 and hard wiring the rear speakers!
a) The system is made up of two receivers. They are both very small, and are easily concealable.
b) The front receiver plugs into the base module with 2 wires (left & right speaker wires)
c) The rear speakers plug into the rear receiver.
d) Installation complete!
This is an excellent product and I highly recommend it to all.

Logitech X-540 5.1 Surround Sound Speaker System with Subwoofer Review

I replaced a cheap 2.1 set of speakers, and this sub-woofer is much better sounding than what I had before. Of course you could get even better sound by spending a lot more money, but I believe these are a very good value.
Remember you might need to reconfigure Windows and/or your BIOS and/or your Sound Card for a 5.1 speaker setup. When you are properly setup, you do NOT need to turn on the "Matrix" feature. That is only needed when you connect it to a simple stereo source like a video game console. Your computer will "upgrade" your stereo music to a 5.1 signal when configured correctly, so like I said, you can leave the Matrix button turned off when connected to your computer.
The only negative, as others have shared, is the CABLES ARE SHORT. Add $15 to the price to include a trip to Radio Shack for some RCA extension cables.
I am stilling giving this a 5-start rating, since I knew about the cable length issue before I bought it.

(More customer reviews)I was tired of speakers and wires all over the room just for Surround sound for home theater. Then I came across this sound bar. It was perfect!
A sound bar plus woofer speaker is all that makes up this system. But it somehow sends great sound all around the room. And the quality of sound is like nothing I've gotten from many other tested multi-speaker wired systems. Bells and high sounds sound real. Storms make you want to look outside to make sure its not real. Explosions, gun shots, you name it, very realistic.
I'll never go back to a wired multi-wired speaker system. Why bother?
My only issue is it has only three connections. One digital optical, one digital coaxial and one analog rca L/R (I don't use).
I added a digital optical switcher, to solve this issue. But they could have designed at least 3 optical and three coaxial as standard inputs.
This system sounds so good, why not complement it with more than enough inputs? However, they did not skimp on sound quality in any way.
Highly recommended! Fits perfect above plasma or LCD wall mounted HDTV's.

For me, purchasing a surround-sound decoder and speaker system was the last link in my HT setup. I decided on the YHT-491BL for 5 reasons in particular:
1. I decided all I really needed is 5 speakers for great surround sound, not 7. I've heard the
difference and 7 speakers just isn't kosher for a living room that is being asked to do double-duty as a theater.
2. The price point of the 491BL fit my budget. Also, free shipping was a $55 value.
3. HDMI, optical, and coax digital inputs: my DVR, PS3, and Mac Mini connect easily.
Note: The HDMI inputs are video only and you will still need to connect your digital sound
sources to the receiver via TOSlink optical (2 avail), or digital coax cable (1 avail).
These digital audio cables are very inexpensive.
4. Sound quality from the active-servo subwoofer: I've owned a pair of Yamaha desktop computer speakers (YST-M15) and matching subwoofer (YST-MSW8) for over 10 years and I have never tired of the smooth sound and surprising power from these little studs. The 491BL did not disappoint me from the second I turned it on. The active-servo subwoofer keeps the bass tight and accurate, and the crossover slope from the bass to the mid frequencies is very smooth. The front left and right channels are mounted on good looking stands -- which gets the sound off the floor and puts it at the level it's supposed to be. So far these speakers sound awesome with movies, games, and music.
5. Yamaha quality. The long-lasting aforementioned desktop speakers, and a well-built Yamaha motorcycle have made me a believer in the quality of Yamaha products. Now if I could only learn to play the piano...
I am very happy with this system and have no complaints.

Onkyo HT-SR800 7.1 Home Theater Entertainment System (Black) Review

(More customer reviews)As you can see from a quick search this is almost always reviewed highly and is also highly rated by Consumer Reports. I recently got my own and I wasn't disappointed. The system was easy to set up and a quick browse through the instructions gave me all the info I needed. I have listed the 3 most common complaints about the system below.
1. The HDMI is just a pass through you have to connect the sound to the unit separately (not really that big a deal).
2. The included wire is too thin: this is true you can replace it cheaply with wire bought on Amazon, so its not devastating. I recommend the METRA Ltd S14-100 MTA 14 Gauge Clear Speaker Wire which you can get here for $21.53 and will really improve things.
3. Onkyo doesn't make speaker stands for this system and the speakers only have keyhole style brackets on the back for mounting which can make buying wall brackets difficult.
I'm not positive how to resolve this, B-tech makes some screw in mounts you can put in if you dont mind putting some wholes in the speakers B-TECH BT1 Universal Speaker Bracket for Small Speakers (Pair per box). They also make a wall mount that clamps the side of the speakers if youd prefer not putting holes in your new speakers B-Tech BT77 Speaker brackets Black.
But both of those solutions are kinda expensive (30 per pair for screw in, 70 per pair for the clamps).
I recently bought some universal mounts (Premier Mounts PSPK-5B Universal Speaker Mount for Walls and Ceilings with 2.5-Inch Extensions (Black)) that supposedly work with keyholes so we'll see.
UPDATE: the speakers are great, make sure to use the microphone to calibrate, this is part of the value of the system and makes a big difference in the sound quality.
About the mounts:
The cheap universal mounts, were ok.
They worked fine on the Satellite speakers but there were some design flaws and they don't have the strength to hold up the big front speakers. One of the pieces broke during assembly but as I had 5 and couldn't hang the front speakers with them anyways that wasn't too big of a problem.
I used the 29.99 B-Tech mounts mentioned above (the ones that have to be screwed in) for the front speakers and they worked perfectly. Enjoy!
