Panasonic PT-AX200U 720p 3LCD Home Theater Projector Review

Didn't think buying a projector would take as long as it did. I've been researching projectors off and on for the past 2 and a half years and have enjoyed the process of testing a virtually endless onslaught of manufacturers and different image quality. Finally decided on a Panasonic PT-AX200U due to a special running through HTmarket.com that had a mail in rebate for an additional 1 year warranty on the purchase of a Panasonic projector. I bought my projector for $1299 and have had about a month to play with the projector.
Initial highlights - good projector for the money if you have a good source (HD DVD/Blu Ray/upconverting DVD player). Very easy setup with image adjustments. I was up and running in 5 minutes.
Friends and family are stunned at the size of the screen images capable with this projector (I'm running a 110 inch screen). Clearly capable of more than that.
Good image for old format DVDs IF you have a DVD upconverter to 720p/1080i/1080p. I initially ran a couple of DVDs, the Incredibles, Lord of the Rings, the Matrix, Blade, into through my Denon DVD 2900 (originally a $1000 DVD player) and was somewhat disappointed by the pixelation and some noticeable Screen Door Effect (SDE).
My brother came over the following weekend with his Sony Playstation 3 and we ran one of his videogames through the HDMI cable into the projector to see if we could tell a difference - whoa, noticeable difference in image detail and elimination of the pixelation and SDE.
Went out to Best Buy the following weekend to buy a cheap RCA dvd up converter for $30 and now run all my DVDs through it.
Would recommend this projector if pairing to a high gain screen - the bulb brightness, while bright for stock, definitely requires a high gain (+1.3) screen to maximize some of the darker image films (Blade/Matrix/Lord of the Rings/Aliens).

I bought this screen about less than a month ago....i tell ya, it may not be a draper, Stewart or dalite which i prefer but i really like this screen a lot! Great picture, and i bought this screen for $467 with overnight shipping included!!!! That's pretty good! Especially for a tension screen that has a pretty good reputation for affordable screens...oh and their customer service it pretty great tooo...Adrain silva....great guy and very helpful....Got this cine-grey model and was a little worried it might be too dim but it actually looks awesome!!!! It may give the other big companies a run for their money that;s for sure! It has a 1.1 gain on and the movies looks amazing!!!! I use a mitsubishi hc5500 ( super nice projector too). My wife even loves watching in our basement now even if it's a guy flick and my kids watch their favorite disney movies too even thought they've seen it a million times already....if you find a deal like i did, buy it...for the price i paid it's almost the price for a new lower end spectrum series Elite screen sells...Great job Elite Screens! I'm very happy with this screen!

The packaging is long. I had to move it to another location after I bought it and it barely fit into my Sienna minivan. Was a little worried since there's no other reviews, but glad to say everything went pretty smooth. Two negatives, 1) The package was missing the mason anchors, not a big deal since I wasn't going to install it in a brick wall or anything, but still...missing.
2) The screws that came with the screen are questionable. This screen is close to 60 lbs and they give screws I wouldn't trust to hold up my bicycle. I went to home depot and got the 5/16" lag screws that were 3" long. I live in CA and don't want this falling on me in case there's an earthquake.
It was mounted on my ceiling but I didn't need the full 24" black drop. The Elite adjustment pdf was totally wrong. They have since updated the pdf: [...] and it looks about right (expect Figure 10 and Figure 12 should be swapped). Adjust the black drop is the yellow hole, not the grey one. For me, turning it clockwise 1 full circle made the black drop retract 1/2". I didn't need 10", so I made 20 clockwise circles with my allen wrench in the yellow hole while it's fully retracted in the housing case. Then you lower it to see how close you came and you can now make minor adjustments (up/down) turning the yellow hole. Always good to fully retract the screen and then lower after your adjustment to see the final result.
60 lbs in not that heavy, but you will need 2 ppl to install this mainly because of the size of the screen. My Epson 8700ub looks great on this screen.

Purchased this screen for use in my first home theatre. This screen came via special courier well packaged and was easy to install. In my case I mounted it to the ceiling using supplied lag bolts into joists behind the drywall. Screen comes with many control options, RF, Infared and Hardwire possibilities. Hardwire can be easily accomplished by using RJ45 connectors and standard ethernet type cabling since the screen has a female RJ45 connector and the wired control using has an RJ45 male plug.
Screen is easy to adjust, the manual is a bit hard to understand regarding which way to turn the adjustment screws to set the screen down height but careful adjustment and testing frequently solves that problem in short order. The extra black surface at the top of a nice touch allowing the screen to be lowered to a good viewing height when mounted against or in the ceiling.
Tension is controlled on each side with a guide wire and keeps the screen flat at all times, the surface is a bright white and provides a great picture in all but the brightest lit rooms. My installation is in the basement with controlled ambient light so this is not a problem, I probably will consider a grey screen in the future that allows for better blacks in the picture but that's nitpicking.
I highly recommend this screen for use in a home theatre, especially when paird with an Epson PowerLite Home Cinema 8100 Home Theatre Projector (V11H336120)

I purchase this screen for my church worship service. I wasn't sure how really big it was or how it was going to look. I was surprised when it arrived how really big it was. It's a huge screen. Setup was easy. It came with two remotes plus the wall control which I didn't even bother to install. The wireless remote works from about 75 or more feet away. What i love about it is that you can stop it whereever you chose when rolling up or down. The screen rolls down fine and rolls back up without any problems whatsoever. I have been using this for 1 year now and I am extremely happy with my purchase. Elite screen rocks. It looks perfect.
