(More customer reviews)I was looking for a solution for my shore house deck and found this Yahmaha home theater packaged with outdoor speakers. The unit appears to be built solid and the speakers appear to be of good quality.
Likes:
1. Easy to plug iPod in on top
2. Quality of sound is good
3. Size of device is small
Dislikes:
1. Contols for the radio and other featues only available via the remote
2. Remote distance is limited, I was hoping to have the unit inside the house near a window to the deck and control things via remote anywhere on the deck. Turns out I need to be about 5' or less from the window to work
3. volume is fairly low, need to turn the volume up to around 35 to play light level on the deck. Unit goes up to 60 and is fairly loud but might be a stretch for a large party
Overall good unit, I'm happy with it but wish the price was a little lower.

Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin Mini Docking Speaker for iPod Review

(More customer reviews)I've been looking forward to this product since its introduction more than a month ago. I loved the original Zeppelin, but was excited about the smaller form factor and a USB digital connection in the Zeppelin Mini. Call me naive, I was actually hoping that the sound quality would be quite comparable to that of the original Zeppelin. As the B&W's website says:
"With Zeppelin Mini, you get everything you love about Zeppelin - advanced acoustic technology, intelligent design, elegant connectivity - in a streamlined, compact sound dock package that's perfect for desktops and bedside tables. "
But I was let down; the two speakers produce completely different sound. Pop music (I tried out Rhianna and Britney Spears) sounded okay due to the typically louder treble and bass in the recording, although when played louder it sounded clearly distorted and hollow; classical symphonies (I tried out Brahms' Symphony #4 and Shostakovich's Cello Concerto #1) sounded disappointing - the entire bass section cannot be heard until the volume is cranked up really high!; classical solo and chamber music (I played Vivaldi's Four Season - Winter, 2.Largo) turned out to be surprisingly really good and in my opinion the best genre for this speaker. After turning on Bass enhancer on my iPod EQ setting (unlike the original Z, the Mini does not have an external bass/treble control), the bass can be heard more but is too obviously distorted - cracking sound can be heard at times.
The bass sounded more full when positioned closer to me. B&W claims that the introduction of a flowport (absent in the original Zeppelin) is designed to amplify the bass; I found the outcome to be nothing like that of the original Zeppelin. I also expect the bass to be thicker if the speaker is placed against a wall or a corner (instead of in the middle of a table at the Apple store)
With the addition of USB connectivity, I was originally very excited about the idea of directly syncing my iPod to iTunes, controlling iTunes using a remote, and most importantly, the capability of bypassing analog signal processing on a computer to the speaker. However, given the significantly compromised quality of sound (esp. lack of bass), the idea of producing better quality analog signal that would only be greatly sacrificed in bass production seems meaningless.
Nevertheless, I was impressed with the design of the Mini. The speaker is much smaller than I'd envisioned based on the gallery (and after checking out the sound quality was I wished it was bigger). The Mini is light but feels very solid when carried around. The design is much more classy than other iPod speakers: the chrome bowl mirror matches the back of the original iPod (if you still own one); when firmly attached to the docking arm, it can be elegantly turned 90 degrees for cover flow (isn't that the only reason to buy an iPod touch/iPhone?); controlling the iPod has never been easier with the inventive protruded docking arm design (same as the original Z). Most impressive to me, the enclosure of black cloth over the speaker (as opposed to the colder, more industrial wire mesh used in Bose and other iPod speakers) stands out among the crowd with exquisiteness.
If I were to choose a small iPod speaker based on what looks best for my apartment, I would definitely go with the Mini. As for sound quality, it sounded very impressive for classical chamber music, good enough for pop, but definitely not satisfying for classical symphonies. However, if you are certain that any larger speaker (e.g. the original Z) cannot be considered, it is quite a good choice. (And at this price I would choose it over Bose any day - there, I said it).

(More customer reviews)We purchased this cube for our 15 year old daughter, after reading a product-placement review at Wired. It is ergonomically far simpler than a full amp/speakers/subwoofer stereo system, easily moved room-to-room or used as a footrest, and it provides inputs for all of her music sources.
Note that there are actually two 5 1/4-inch coaxial drivers; the other two speaker-like ports are passive reflectors. So while this cube presents the illusion of being a subwoofer, two speakers, and a crossover circuit, it actually consists of two full-range speakers. There are physical limits to the subwoofer effect one can achieve with any 17 lb, 20 Watts RMS, 10" cube; this wouldn't be the right choice for a high school dance. There's little risk of the bass loosening one's deck screws, and anyone who knows the sound of a 200 Watts RMS 12" powered subwoofer could write a scathing review if they chose to be so clever. Given the physical limits here, I'm surprised how good this cube sounds.
In a 10' by 10' room the sound is remarkable. The 17 lb heft delivers. The bass is extraordinarily clean; the highs are quite clear but not the cleanest I've ever heard. With an inferior-sounding bass, a teen's natural reaction is to crank it up to compensate, and parents hears loud bass through the walls, of an embarrassing and disturbing sound quality. With this extraordinarily clean bass, there is no compensation reaction, and parents hear a tight, quieter bass through the walls that is far more pleasing. This is a nice bonus, and an argument to proceed for parents hesitating to so equip their teens.
With twice the budget, and a willingness to give up the ergonomic advantages of a single, portable cube, I'd go self-powered components from Audioengine, with extraordinarily clear highs to match the more powerful, actual subwoofer bass:
Audioengine A5 Powered Multimedia Speaker System (Black)
Audioengine AS8 - Subwoofer - 125 Watt - black
Nevertheless, this cube fills its niche perfectly, and is a great value at its price point.

Edifier IF500 2.1 Ipod Speaker Blk with Fm Radio Rms 32+10X2W Subw Review

(More customer reviews)I watched this product for a while deciding whether it would be a good purchase, finally I decided to get it. I also have a Bose Soundock. The Edifier is a great looking device, and with the radio receiver it was a good buy. Unfortunately for all its good points, the Edifier just isn't up to scratch with the sound quality, and really doesn't match the Bose Soundock clarity and definition. It has good loud volume, but low end volume hasn't got great quality sound. In short I am hesitant to recommend this product especially next to a soundock which goes for around the same price.
I certainly enjoy the product but doubt I would have got it had i listened to it before purchasing.

(More customer reviews)The Geneva M puts out an incredible sound for such a small little box and while it has no handles, it is easy to transfer between rooms to enjoy my fantastic music anywhere.
The Geneva sound is excellent from top to bottom, and bass production lives up to the quality of the music played. The level of power is stronger with CD's than my i-Pod, but this is true with my primary large stereo system as well.
The beauty of the stereo is in its fine simplicity and fine craftsmanship. It enhances my room but does not define it.
I also love the remote control. It is simple, easy to see and accomplishes what it is intended to accomplish. I do not feel that I need to wear my glasses and get out a driver's manual.
Overall, the performance of the Geneva M is spectacular.

Altec Lansing iMT810 Digital Boombox Review

(More customer reviews)First of all I would like to say I was set on buying the beats by dre. Beatbox. Fortunately I didn't because I've found that the Altec Lansing iMT810 to be a far better purchase. I'm not saying the Beatbox is bad, it's just that the Altec Lansing speaker offers so much more. The sound is absolutely amazing. Bass is exactly how it should be, booming but not overpowering. The highs are very crisp and mids are very defined. If any aspect of the sound doesn't seem to please, there are EQ settings with these speakers, allowing you to set a perfect preset for your music. So all in all, sound is not an issue at all. It is quite phenomenal. The included display is also very useful, allowing you to see what is playing. The volume on these speakers can be set pretty high. It is rather ear shattering at max, but I'm one of those paranoid users who think it might blow the speakers. There are also buttons on the speakers themselves that will come in handy including source, EQ, and forward, and repeat. The altec lansing's source buttons allow multiple mp3 or any music device to be connected to it allowing multiple devices to played instead of having to swap devices. Finally, the Altec Lansing offers the option of running off an AC adapter or batteries which is all the options you need. Take it on the go with batteries or have it stationary. So far compared to the Beatbox, the Altec Lansing offer so much more including the display, multiple source options, buttons on the speakers, and options to run off batteries. Also! the Altec Lansing is priced lower than the Beatbox so I wouldn't see much of a reason to go with the Beatbox. Overall, the Altec Lansing is very pleasing. The quality of the speaker is amazing including the remote that it comes with which is made of a very high quality plastic material. I can't explain it but it feels great and seems like it will last forever. I love this speaker, it does everything that I want in a speaker. Oh yeah it also has a great FM radio. Really great quality seriously and its another thing the Beatbox doesn't have. I would highly recommend this speaker to anyone for it is probably the best one out there considering its lower pricing compared to other popular ipod docks.
