(More customer reviews)I bought this at a local major electronics dealer nearly two years ago for $400, and it is worth every penny. It not only is the sound still rich, clear, and undistorted when you have it playing full blast, the music sounds good when you have the volume set at 1. The way the red circle around the volume knob lights up to the music is nice, and there are 4 settings for that too. There are several different surround sound options, extensive, customizable, and savable EQ settings, and a "Groove" button that works like the "Loud" button on a car CD deck. If you want a quality sound system for not a lot of money, this is it.

RCA RC5910P 5-Disc DVD Player Review

(More customer reviews)I have this player and it does not recognize CD-R discs. The only reason I would buy a 5 disc changer is to use it to double as a CD changer. Unfortunately this one does not recognize CD-R's. If you record your own music onto CD-R, this is not the machine for you. It also has a habit of dropping frames in DVD and makes popping sounds on music CD's. The programable remote is also limited in the number of other devices it will recognize.

Having a radio built in is a waste of money. This is the best Sony yet and you don't have to worry about water and sand. The seal works perfectly. It only takes one mistake with sand and you can toss those other units in the trash. Plays for hours on rechargable batteries. Maybe the make a better unit but I haven't seen it..............

Sony STR-DA4400ES 7.1 Channel AV Receiver Review

(More customer reviews)There is not another brand on the market that can do what this one can, but it still has a lot of limitations and notes on every page of the manual. The manuals are available on the Sony web page under support.
This can convert component/composite into 1080P HDMI, but it can't convert any HDMI video into component or composite. I was using Zone 2 component output for my old HDTV and HDMI for the new one. It worked okay for the satalite receiver, but I had to connent both HDMI and component video inputs to get it to work for both zones. Unfortunately, the Sony DB is a pain to switch between HDMI output and component and it can't do both at the same time. So it is a real pain that zone 2 only supports component output with the receiver and you have to connect all your components twice to really use both zones. Many you could live with only component inputs, but TrueHD and DTS Master Audio require HDMI input require HDMI inputs. If you want to utilize deep color and 1080P from the DB, you have to use an HDMI input too. It can't upscale to deep color, connecting the Wii with the component input looks great in 1080P though.
It is pretty awsome with allowing different video and audio sources being configured to work together. From the different options available (DB, DVD, CD,...) there are some limitiations of want video and audio sources can be configured, but I was able to do everything combination I needed.
I couldn't find anyway to tell if Deep Color was actually passing through the receiver other then watching the change in the picture. It says you have to use direct video for Deep Color, so some configuration can actually loose deep color from the signal. I also was not able to upscale 1080i to 1080P.
It supports two channel audio out the HDMI port but will not pass DD, DTS etc. If you turn this functin on though, you only get 2 channel audio from the receiver speakers too. So, you can't really use the TV speakers via the HDMI input, but you can connect separate analog audio cables to do it. You can use the preouts to connect the TV as center channel, but it you are spending this much you should really invest in a quality center channel speaker.
The mircophone supplied for automatic speaker calibration is not very good. It said my speakers were out of phase when they were not. The stereo microphone with the STR-DA5400ES worked much better.
Control for HDMI may not work if you have a cheap HDMI cable like I started with.

(More customer reviews)I did not purchase this from Amazon, but I wanted to write a review anyway. I have been looking everywhere for a stereo system that has clear sound, great bass, an iPod hookup and cd changer. If it had a cassette deck, that would be even better, but I could deal without one. I really liked the idea of an extra subwoofer. I wasn't going to purchase this system because it only has a 1 disc tray for cd's, but I figured that's where the iPod comes in for continuous music, and I should at least try it. Needless to say, I bought this stereo and hooked it up immediately (set up was a piece of cake).
I was immediately disappointed when the wires for my speakers were extremely short. Maybe only about 3 1/2 feet long. I like to spread out my system a little so I can get the best sound. Now, I'm not talking about placing speakers all around the room - they wouldn't even extend to the edges of my entertainment center.
The worst part of all, and the main reason why I am returning this system, is the sound is muffled. Even when I changed the preset EQ settings, the only one I was somewhat happy with was the "MP3 SURROUND"... but it still muffled my music. I could barely hear "s" sounds in the vocals... when I could, they sounded more like an "f". I should say, I am also very picky when it comes to electronics, but when I'm spending $200 + dollars, I think it's allowed! All I am asking for is crisp sound.
So, here are my pros to the system:
--Very nice looking stereo system
--DSGX feature really boosts the sound, along with the subwoofer
--LOVE the included iPod dock, which also charges
--7 different EQ settings for sound (my old stereo had 4)
--530 watts for loud sound
My cons, which severely outweigh the pros for me:
--Muffled sound. Vocals and music bits are not clear at ALL
--1 CD playing capability
--Wires and chords aren't long enough to spread out components to my liking
--Expensive for the things it is lacking
Hopefully this review will be helpful - I wish I had one that was this detailed when I was looking. Mind you, everyone has their own taste.
I would not recommend this system to anyone who is looking for crisp, clear sound. But if you like a nice strong bass and a lot of power... you may want to take a look.

By "very clean sound" I mean that the accuracy/lack of distortion is excellent for a unit of its size.
I use it for water aerobics classes, along with several other boomboxes at the same time (that all receive their music via a low-power FM transmitter). In this environment, compared to both the Aiwa CD Boom Box - CSD-XD55 and the Sony CDF-G70, the S2 has less volume but cleaner sound, especially when the bass button is on.
(2) Minuses
I keep accidentally activating the Jog-Lever -- the joystick on the handle -- when I grab the S2 by the handle. "Accidentally activating" means that I knock the FM tuner off its station.
(3) Other considerations
It does have an FM antenna, that completely disappears into the body of the unit.
(4) Summary
"Very clean sound" means that, if you want a true portable, it's worth the price.

(More customer reviews)I bought this stereo on presidents' day and was surprised at it's size it's HUGE ! and the sound earth shattering ! One reviewer states that there is no way to connect your non - ipod mp3 player to this system, that is not quite true, all you have to do is get a 3.5 mm x 2 RCA male cable ( y - connector ) and hook it up to the 'Phono' input jack in the rear, use the function button to select phono and wallah ! you are in business. ( make sure the cable says digital ) The only drawback to this hook - up is you can't control the mp3 functions through the stereo but it sounds great ! It is also important to use a good quality cable, if you use a cheap cable it will probably hum or hiss during playback. Hopefully this review will assist others who are thinking about this sony. The other surprise I got was the wide margin in price I shopped around got prices ranging from $353 - $680 simply amazing isn't it ? I paid a little more than I would've liked but I got mine from a store close to my home, so I guess I paid for the convenience.

(More customer reviews)I just received this stereo in the post office and took a 2 hour lunch break just to hook it up and play with it! This thing is way too big for my dorm room so i'm going to have to make some room the best I can. After hearing everyone elses systems pound I thought I would get something that could beat the competition and it absolutely blows it away. This 4 speaker setup is awesome. The only thing that would make it even better would be a center channel speaker. Unfortunately 1 is not included so there isnt full 5.1 but the 2 main speakers and 2 rear speakers are so loud that it doesn't matter. Halo 2 sounds unbelievable as well as other games. I'm gonig to replay Halo 2 on Legendary just so I can hear what it really sounds like! So long to the crappy tv speakers!

It also lets me connect composit video devices and send them to my monitor through the s-video jack. With my JVC receiver I could never get a good balance between my surround speakers and my center and front speakers. With the new receiver it sounds great. The only problem is now I'm tempted to add side surrounds to get 7.1 surround.

There's a button that gives you enhanced bass and a dial that supplies fine tuning of the tweeter, and that's it! Not even the ability to balance the speakers. The flip side of course is simplicity, and simplicity is the name of the game from assembly to operation of these handsome components and speakers. Just link everything together, plug it in, and enjoy impressive sound. Impressive, that is, for everyone but those who want to rattle the walls with amplified rock and loud orchestral compositions. They should look elsewhere. But for those who, like my wife and I, live in snug apartments and whose tastes run to small-group jazz and classical chamber music with emphasis on solo piano, violin, guitar, sax, and trumpet, Technics has put together a terrific audio system. Just squeeze it in wherever there's room and let it fill your space with warm, balanced sound.

Aiwa HS-SP370 Cross Trainer Sports Personal Stereo Review

(More customer reviews)I've really enjoyed this personal headphone stereo/cassette player. Although it is about the same size as other cassette players, it is definitely more convienent. It has a strap that won't allow the radio to fall off when you're working out & a special lock so the cassette is unable to jump around.
You can attach the strap to the bars of treadmills, stairclimbers, your arms, whatever and it will not fall off. If you're one of those exercisers who just cannot workout without that special cassette tape...then this is the perfect headphone cassette player for you.
The sound quality is also great. Like many stereo's there's an extra bass button but these little headphones have a big sound.

I even brought a Bose system home only to find out it does not have an HDMI interface. This system has that and more. I am a non-audiophile who just wants good sound when watching TV and movies. This system certainly provides that. The connections are reasonably staight forward and use standard cabling unlike some system that have custom cabling that is often too short for proper installation. The only negative is the fine print on the receiver and DVD player. I need to have a flashlight to read it. Otherwise I am extremely happy.

Denon AVR-787 7.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver Review

(More customer reviews)I couldn't be more pleased with this purchase. But a little planning is advisable.
I ordered this unit on July 5th and received it on July 6th with overnight ordering using Amazon Prime. The additional shipping cost with Prime was only $1.99.
Right after I ordered it, I went on to the Denon site and decided to start to read the owner's manual. It was quite an education. Before you attempt to install the unit, make sure you study the wiring diagrams and the setup instructions in the first few pages of the manual.
That being said, plan on about $300 in additional costs buying the proper cabling. For maximum results, you need 3 sets of Video Composite cables (One from your television/DBS box, one from your DVD player, and from this unit to the video inputs on your television. Also plan on 2 optical cables for sound: one from the television DBS box and one from the DVD player.
Provided you did your homework in advance, and have the proper cables, the installation took me about 60 minutes or so. I used the provided microphone to do the automatic speaker balancing. However, after that, I did a little additional tweaking for my own taste.
If you set the TV/DBS box as Composite 2 and the DVD player as Composite 1 the default settings take over and there is little else to do in installation.
Past that, the sound is great and everything seems to be working flawlessly. I am going to get the iPod dock next.
Great performance at a reasonable price.

Sony STRDG720 7.1 Audio Video Receiver - Black Review

(More customer reviews)If you own a Blu-ray player and it decodes uncompressed audio like Dolby TruHD and DTS-HD MA. Then now is is time to buy this inexpensive yet very capable receiver. It was huge improvement from my nine year old Sony 5.1 receiver, which still works well.
I wanted to complement my PS3 and 1080p 65" Mitsubishi with clean uncompressed audio. This receiver met this expectation for me and beyond with the incredible sound it can process. After setting it up, I popped in The Simpsons Movie on Blu-ray which has DTS-HD MA. I could not believe my Sony speakers could sound any better until it started playing. I then tried Spiderman 3 with Dolby TrueHD 5.1 and it sounded amazing when Sandman fought Spiderman during the armored car scene. I was truly convinced that I made the right decision buying the 720 after listening to those tests movies. To every high, there is a low.
The receiver menu took awhile to understand from its manual. I spent about an hour trying to figure out how to adjust my speaker set up settings. After some curse words and taking a break, I finally figured it out. Its still not easy to navigate the menus for minor tweaking to this day after using it for a week! Also I miss the blue light that lets you know when its processing surround sound. It does have a brief scroll telling you what it is processing. But its not the same :(
Bonus!
Harmony does now have the 720 in their database and my 880 remote works great with it.
The 720 is sure a great upgrade for my home theater and I hope it can last just as long as my old one! Be sure to have enough HDMI cables for your home theater set up. I get mine from mycablemart.com and no I dont work for them bcuz I dropped their name. They have 6' 1.3a compliant cables with shipping for under ten bucks!
If you have it set up right, you will not be disappointed with the 720.

Sony STRDG920 7.1-Channel Audio/Video Receiver Review

(More customer reviews)I needed a relatively inexpensive AV receiver with at least 3 HDMI inputs and able to send *all* inputs through the HDMI output to the TV. Onkyo TX-SR606 was the only other receiver I was able to find that met these specs, and since I have an Onkyo, I wanted to stay with that brand. The catch was that the Onkyo would upconvert non-HDMI inputs to 1080i. This Sony upconverts to 1080p. That was pretty much the only thing that swayed me. It is quite minor but I do have a 1080p LCD.
The Sony is very easy to set up. The HDMI handles every pretty seamlessly and my non-HDMI (component) items just needed the video and audio port selection done and that was it.
I like the fact you can rename any of the ports via "GUI Mode" and the speaker set up was a breeze. The microphone worked like a charm (all 1 minute of use.) Performance is pretty good for the price point. I will probably upgrade this in a couple of years when I am able to get back to a true 7.1 setup.
Highly recommend this product. I would not go as far as saying this has better audio than a Denon or Onkyo but it handles itself well..and it allowed me to rip out about 8 cables.
Connections used: three HDMI in, one HDMI out, two component (with one analog and one optical for audio) and one analog audio (soon to be optical)
