(More customer reviews)There's two incredible reasons to buy this thing- It puts out a true 50W RMS into all 4 channels, and it will do time alignment. It's a really unique head unit in that sense, and it's why I bought it. Besides that, it's 2005 tech. A nice color LCD, SD card MP3 support (only up to 2GB), and the basics.
But to get real time alignment and a really powerful amp in a head unit was downright awesome if you want a mid-range setup without a trunk full of equipment.
It would get 5 stars if the MP3 browsing didn't suck so hard. But it's worth it.

I have it inside my sport 4X4 truck and it's accompanied by 4 pioneer 6"X9" speakers (1 each door), 2 tweeters and a Kicker CVR 12" Subwoofer. I use only one amplifier which is a 4 channel Boss Acoustic Riot Amp that pushes 1600W!!!!! OH YEAH. I can keep a party with this set up. ALL features including video out works with my 5.5 Generation 80GB Video Ipod.
The stereo is amazing and it gives more value than I expected. The touch screen mimicks the ipod unit which makes "ease of use easier". I bought the IPOD Video cable separately and its just plug and play. The one draw back is that the IPOD 160GB (Sixth generation) does not provide video out on this Clarion stereo so if you have the 5.5 Gen IPOD it's better for you.

Sony D-NE330 Walkman Cd MP3 Atrac Player W/Remote Review

(More customer reviews)This Sony D-NE330 Walkman has nice sound, reads ID3 Tag, comes with a remote, looks slim and sleek, has a hole for lanyard and plays MP3 CD for 40 hours on 1AA battery. The only one thing missing is the radio. Although the remote does not have LCD, and the LCD on the player does not have backlight, it is still an excellent CD walkman. The CD player makes some noise when reading the CD, but it is not a big problem for me. My Sony D-NE330 Walkman is black color, and I really love it.
The D-NF430 is what I wanted in the beginning. They look almost identical but the D-NF430 model has a radio. However, I could not find D-NF430 in store or on the internet, so I bought this one. It looks beautiful and sounds beautiful. I especially like the remote control. My Sony D-NF420 has a radio but no remote control, both of them are very good MP3 CD player. Can't go wrong with Sony CD walkman :)

(More customer reviews)This baby does not skip.. hit it, shake it... it simply doesn't skip. Excellent sound with enough volume unless you want to destroy you ear drums! Having a radio built in is a waste of money. This is the best Sony yet and you don't have to worry about water and sand. The seal works perfectly. It only takes one mistake with sand and you can toss those other units in the trash. Plays for hours on rechargable batteries. Maybe the make a better unit but I haven't seen it..............

Mx406 - Mcintosh Am/fm/cd Player with Aux Input Review

(More customer reviews)Ten years from now, when the compact disc format finally reaches complete obsolescence, we will be able to look back at the McIntosh MX406 and it's big brother the McIntosh MX4000 as perhaps the high-water mark of car audio excellence. (However, a tip of the hat must be made to the legendary Alpine 7909 (introduced in 1989!) and the follow up 1998 Alpine 7909 Anniversary Edition.) I owned a few other stereos, however the sonic quality of the MX406 was such that audiophiles and non-audiophiles alike were astounded by the loudness and detail of the stereo, (McIntosh amps and ten Oz Audio speakers, when the name "Oz" used to mean something). The MX406 utilizes Dual 20-bit Burr-Brown digital to analog converters and put out a whopping 9 volts on the preamp outs, helping to account for the stupendous clarity and headroom it provides and boasts a signal to noise ratio of an unheard of (in the car audio realm) of 110 db and a dynamic range of 100 db, making playing of transients very lifelike and accurate. Incidently, Clarion, parent company of McIntosh Labs, Inc. made a Clarion-badged version of this deck, the Clarion DRX 9255, also a fine source unit, and benefits from a scan forward and backward function which the MX406 lacks! So if you want to listen to a ten-minute long song and your favorite passage is at 09:00, then you're just going to have to wait, buddy. And pay attention because you can't rewind it either! This is a single-purposed machine indeed.
Cosmetically, it is beautiful with a black, onyx-like glass front panel and a soft, blue electroluminescent display bracketed with extruded and brushed aluminum accents on either end of it--signature McIntosh styling. I matched these with a set of matching dash-mounted analog (needles) stereo power output meters for an over-the-top presentation.
I owned one for six years or so, and had to send it back repeatedly for the laser pick up and various other issues. (In its defense, an idiot car detailer sprayed vinyl cleaner all over it and followed that up with a shot of compressed air!) After the fifth or sixth time back to Binghamton, NY, McIntosh replaced the then-six-year-old stereo with a brand new one in spite of being far out of warranty! I sold it online and got exactly what I paid for the original one, sort of like putting up a refundable 800-dollar deposit for the privilege of enjoying one of these for six years. The upshot of all this is that McIntosh obviously stands behind what they sell.
I'm not in any position to blow $3000 on a big car stereo system anymmore, but I will always remember with fondness my McIntosh MX406.

I was disappointed to see it offered at a retail stereo store in the Boston area (Tweeters) for $50 less, and then saw it on a website (Mercata, perhaps) for nearly $100 less than what amazon is selling it for. Yamaha MCR-230BL Micro Component System (Black) Review

(More customer reviews)I've been a big fan of Yamaha receivers for many years. If you buy towards the top of the range, you won't be disappointed. I still own a DSP-A3090, an R100, and an MCR-E300GLC mini-system. All have performed heroically over the years with virtually no problems. When I saw the MCR-230BL advertised, the USB and iPod inputs were the draw. I assumed that since it was a Yamaha product, it would have intuitive controls and at least one aux input (shame on me for not checking this out beforehand). First of all, the controls are a mess. To make very basic adjustments in tone, you have to dive into a menu system that should be an example to designers everywhere of how to frustrate your customers. I suspect 80% of people that buy this will never figure out how to adjust bass and treble. There should have been dedicated knobs for this but I understand the necessity of controlling cost. Regardless, there are many examples of good menu driven controls. In this case, the controls are awful. Secondly, there are no aux inputs. Forget connecting anything else to this other than an iPod and usb device. Thirdly, this is available with or without the speakers. I was intrigued by the unusal depth of the speakers so I bought these as well. Save your money. The speakers lack any semblance of realistic midrange, bass or smooth treble. I've owned many speakers and understand these are basically throw-aways but was hoping Yamaha might have produced a diamond in the rough among cheap speakers. No such luck. So what's to like? The iPod functionality is good. The remote controls most anything you will need to control in the iPod. It has an output for a sub. The usb input is cool. I've connected several flash dives and a 40Gb portable, usb powered hard drive. All worked well. I finally ran a mini-jack to rca cable from the headphone output of this to my other Yamaha mini-system so I get the better sound quality and controls. If you are considering buying this, I'd look at something a little more sophisticated from Yamaha or Denon, something you will be happy to use for many years. If you want iPod connectivity with controls, there are many iPod docks that can be connected to any receiver, some of which have remotes and other nice features but all of which will cost far less than this unusual mis-step by Yamaha.

Denon DNC615 Pro Rack Mount CD Player with Digital Output Review

(More customer reviews)A review on Amazon of another CD player, the Teac CD-P1250, said that it was the only single-disc CD player on the market. Nope, there's two. Well, one and a half anyway.
The Denon DN-C615 isn't exactly consumer gear, but it isn't exactly pro gear, either. It's got rack ears and pitch adjustment, and it's set up for a wired remote and output cascading, but the outputs are unbalanced RCA plus SPDIF. It has auto cuing and audible manual cuing within a track, but doesn't allow you to save cue points. So I think "semi-pro" is a pretty good description.
It's aimed at DJs, community radio stations, and sound reinforcement applications, and it wouldn't be out of place in a small studio for applications like sampling. And, what matters to my family, it drops right in to a home stereo system, so long as your cabinet can manage the rack ears (which don't look like they're removable except with a hacksaw).
The sound (even before break-in) is typical Denon: clear and airy, with both good definition and satisfactory thump in the bass, free of noticeable spurious harmonics. The controls and displays are easy to use and understand and don't have any immediately obvious ergonomic problems or bugs. It plays CD-Rs fine, both audio CD-Rs and MP3 CDs, and it allegedly plays CD-RWs, but I probably won't find out because CD-RWs and my computers don't get along.
MP3 files sound as good on the DN-C615 as I've ever heard them. You don't need to burn a special MP3 CD: it'll take plain data CDs with MP3 files on them and even lets you navigate through folders. But if you do give it a disc that's been burned as an MP3 CD, it'll run the playlist in order, which is a big improvement over my DVD player which plays MP3 files in some strange order I have yet to figure out. And I have to admit, seeing the song titles change as it plays is positively decadent.
The price is a little higher than I'd have liked, and unless you want to build a wired remote or have your chair real close to the player, you'll need a special remote (another US$40). But I do like the player so far.

This thing is way too big for my dorm room so i'm going to have to make some room the best I can. After hearing everyone elses systems pound I thought I would get something that could beat the competition and it absolutely blows it away. This 4 speaker setup is awesome. The only thing that would make it even better would be a center channel speaker. Unfortunately 1 is not included so there isnt full 5.1 but the 2 main speakers and 2 rear speakers are so loud that it doesn't matter. Halo 2 sounds unbelievable as well as other games. I'm gonig to replay Halo 2 on Legendary just so I can hear what it really sounds like! So long to the crappy tv speakers!

(More customer reviews)Although there are four separate components and plenty of dials, toggles, and buttons, this is not the set for tinkerers who demand control of the sound. There's a button that gives you enhanced bass and a dial that supplies fine tuning of the tweeter, and that's it! Not even the ability to balance the speakers. The flip side of course is simplicity, and simplicity is the name of the game from assembly to operation of these handsome components and speakers. Just link everything together, plug it in, and enjoy impressive sound. Impressive, that is, for everyone but those who want to rattle the walls with amplified rock and loud orchestral compositions. They should look elsewhere. But for those who, like my wife and I, live in snug apartments and whose tastes run to small-group jazz and classical chamber music with emphasis on solo piano, violin, guitar, sax, and trumpet, Technics has put together a terrific audio system. Just squeeze it in wherever there's room and let it fill your space with warm, balanced sound.

Yamaha MCR-140WH Micro Component System (White) Review

(More customer reviews)I originally chose this product for someone else, who tasked me to find a great bookcase stereo to give as a gift. I ordered it and received it within two days via Amazon Prime. I installed and tested it on Christmas Day. It truly exceeded my expectations in every way. Very attractive layout and veneer, intuitive controls, solid feel, great sound quality. I tested the radio first, then the CD player, then the iPod dock. In all three cases, the performance was very impressive for such a small system. I would compare this very favorably to the Bose system that gets so much advertising. I've listened to that system in several peoples' homes and although it's a good system, I feel the sound quality and appearance of this Yamaha system is superior.
I liked it so much that I immediately ordered a system for our home. I ordered the green color for my friend, but I went with red for our home. It's beautiful and looks very sharp. My wife and I both have iPhones, and we use this system to play our music libraries. It comes with a remote control, which is in itself a very nice little unit. Flawless performance and function. I really have nothing negative to say about this system. It is priced very fairly for its performance, build quality, and appearance. I see another reviewer commented that the speakers cannot be placed adjacent to the unit due to heat buildup. I don't get this at all. The unit never gets hot, and the speakers are placed exactly as shown in the product photographs, that is to say "attached" to the main unit. There are zero issues with heat. I love this little system and I'm sure anyone who takes the chance on one without physically seeing one in the store will be delighted. Anyone have any comments on their experiences or questions, feel free to leave a comment.

You have to add the navigational component which ranges from 180-230. The blue tooth component ranges from 45-75, also its not compatible with the IPhone or ITouch as far as the USB port. So keep this in mind if your really interested in this feature(you can use the auxillary output that comes with the unit into your IPhone/ITouch, but that all. It doesn't not recongize the USB port from the IPhone). Otherwise good product for price.

Kenwood Ddx-516 6.1-Inch Double-Din Navigation Ready DVD Receiver Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this unit about a month ago. I have been very happy with it. Screen display is nice. DVD video looks great. The rear USB, in my opinion, is better than the front, as you can store a flash drive in the glove compartment with no visual issues. I WAS able to hook a portable hard drive into this unit, but after talking to Kenwood, realized that I was limited to 32 gigs with this unit. No big deal, I bought a 16 gig flash drive. One thing that I did not notice in the initial review or specs on this unit was the full functionability of the "Link" feature. This automatically categorizes songs on your USB drive by Artist, Song, Genre, or Album. With 16 gigs of music, it DOES take the unit about 3 minutes to load these up after start up, but I can deal with that. Album art is also displayed via USB. The only negative I can think of at the moment is that is takes about 30 seconds to boot up. This is pretty annoying, but from what I read, is fairy common with these types of units.

Clarion VX409 6.5-Inch Double-DIN Multimedia Station with Touch-Panel Control Station Review

(More customer reviews)I installed this unit in my 2009 Subaru WRX. I removed it and returned it after 3 days.
The good:
-It has a good amount of power. I ran this to my stock speakers and they sounded much, much better than they did with the factory receiver.
-Good build quality. The physical unit feels well made. Mechanical flip face works smoothly, buttons and volume dial feel solid.
-It's cheap.
The bad:
-iPod integration is terrible. There is no way to easily scroll through artists/albums etc. You have to click an arrow to flip through each individual entry. This is OK if you have a couple albums on a nano, but not OK if you plan to connect an iPod with a large library. Finding an artist beginning with 'N' took close to 100 clicks with my full 120GB iPod classic. And if you want to go from Nelly to Nirvana, you have to start all over from 'A' again.
-Poor screen resolution. Font edges are jagged.
-No dimmer. It has a dimmer connection wire, but it did not work on my unit. The screen was at full brightness at all times, and the manual dimmer control did not work either. At night it was like having a spotlight in my dash.
-Restarts between sources. Every time you change sources, the entire unit restarts. Screen shuts off then on and everything. It doesn't take too long, 3-4 seconds maybe, but it is rather odd and obnoxious. I took the whole thing out to check for a loose connection when it first happened. Called Clarion about it and they said it is normal operation.
-Navigation. The specs list this unit as being compatible with an optional navigation unit. However, the only input for the navigation unit is a component video connection. So if you were to connect navigation, the VX409 would only serve as a monitor, and you would not have touch screen control of anything.
Overall, the actual physical unit could be quite nice. However the software feels like going back to using Windows 95.
