(More customer reviews)I got one of these (an AVN 50D to be exact) with my new Toyota 4Runner. It half works -- it will show a map of where I am driving -- but all the navigation and route stuff is disabled, all the buttons gray.
This was when I discovered that there is absolutely no customer support for the Eclipse products. No trouble shooting guides, and their website just sends you to various email addresses in Japan, none of which will ever respond to your questions.
I would not buy an Eclipse product again after this experience.

I have it inside my sport 4X4 truck and it's accompanied by 4 pioneer 6"X9" speakers (1 each door), 2 tweeters and a Kicker CVR 12" Subwoofer. I use only one amplifier which is a 4 channel Boss Acoustic Riot Amp that pushes 1600W!!!!! OH YEAH. I can keep a party with this set up. ALL features including video out works with my 5.5 Generation 80GB Video Ipod.
The stereo is amazing and it gives more value than I expected. The touch screen mimicks the ipod unit which makes "ease of use easier". I bought the IPOD Video cable separately and its just plug and play. The one draw back is that the IPOD 160GB (Sixth generation) does not provide video out on this Clarion stereo so if you have the 5.5 Gen IPOD it's better for you.

(More customer reviews)I had a lot of problems with my first unit. The store that sold this to me replaced the one with problems. It would jump between the AM and FM modes making it unusable. The second unit is free from defects and works just fine.

That said:
The unit is very limited in functions and has bare bones features.
The GPS is quite a pain and limited in functions. It told me I was at my location while I was still 3 blocks away. After working with technical support I downloaded and then installed an updated version of Points of Interest(POI).
The Bluetooth feature does not store any telephone numbers or anything else though it does function as a unit.
The DVD works fine.
The touchscreen works very well.
One problem or lack of display is the clock. You have to hold down a button on the remote for a couple of seconds and then it will show you the time. Another problem is that many of the features are only available on the remote. If you lose the remote you can not update or use many of the features.

JVC KW-XR810 Review

(More customer reviews)With two USB ports, a 1/8" audio jack output, am/fm and bluetooth this car stereo rocks! The bluetooth works great with the supplied microphone, and operates my ipod perfectly. The "pro" EQ is a three band parametric EQ. Only issue is the lack of shelving EQ for the low and high bands. One can change the backlight color to match your vehicle. Pressing the volume knob mutes the stereo, a great feature sadly lacking on other car units. I am not using the on board amplifiers so I cannot vouch for the output. I can't seem to get my phone book to transfer to the unit, but I understand that it can and will, so maybe my Motorola Sidekick is incompatible. All in all A great car stereo for the money, and the bluetooth is the icing on the cake. Please note, the output volume of the bluetooth setting can cause a distorted sound to your callers if it is set too high. There are three settings. Initially I had the out-going volume set to 3, and was told my voice sounded a bit distorted, I set the volume to 2, and no more complaints. The volume through your speakers is easily adjusted using the volume knob! Simple, and quick.

Clarion NX409 6.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

(More customer reviews)I debated buying this NX409 but couldn't resist the price/feature list. While it's loaded with about every feature you could want not all of them work or don't work the way they should.
Navigation:
The GPS doesn't update fast enough so that the vehicle position indicator is not correctly displayed on the map relative to the cross streets especially at speed. The turn by turn voice guidance sometimes says to turn right when you actually are turning left. Many of the POI's are not accurate both for location on the map and also that some don't exist. If you can get beyond the robotic tone and poor text to speech pronunciation...the voice guidance also truncates some road names. Two of the features listed in the GPS menu don't work at all (like the alert tone option when you are approaching your turn). This may be a software bug as they won't even stay selected.
Sirius Radio:
Mostly works well except way too often you'll power the unit up and all the presets you spent time getting just the way you want are gone. That gets old after about the 5th time.
Ipod:
I plugged in my Shuffle to the USB port and it says "unrecognized file format". So I thought I'd check that it's on the list of supported Ipods on the Clarion site. Click on Ipod compatability list and gee..."page not found". At least there's some synergy between their products and the web site.
Other:
The Bluetooth BLT 370 option is a waste of money. Way too often when you start the car it will lock up the radio with a "phone in use" displayed( even when there is no cell phone within a mile of the vehicle)...you then have to shut off the ignition and open the door to get it to power down then restart the car. It sync's up with the phone great but everyone says I sound like I'm calling from the Mariana trench.
The clock setting can only be set manually. When you select your correct time zone and DST to sync the time using the GPS it's off by two hours.
Last but not least Clarion's support both on the web site and by phone is a waste of time.
On a positive note the quality of the audio is very good as is the DVD display.

Myron & Davis NV7TPR1 2008-2011 Toyota Prius In-Dash Navigation System Review

(More customer reviews)I have been looking for an in-dash Navigation System for the 2010 Toyota Prius for about a year now. The Toyota Dealer wanted a jaw dropping $4,000 for the factory system (yea right). The next best thing I could find was the Rosen a good quality OEM unit but hard to find and pricey.
So rather than give up, I checked out this Myron & Davis unit which is also an OEM type of unit. The photos on Amazon don't really do it justice. It matches the Prius trim perfectly and the screen is much bigger in the car than the photos suggest.
Strangely, the price of this unit changes almost daily from $818 (what I paid) to $1,400+ on Amazon which is a bit weird. Honestly, I would not buy this unit for more than $818 (plus the JBL cable and the iPod cable all extras....welcome to the crazy world of after market car audio).
Seems odd there are no Owner Reviews of the NV7TPR1 so thought I would write one. I am replacing the Toyota JBL Head Unit which I really disliked from day 1 especially the Satellite radio which sounded terrible.
First the good stuff about this Unit:
Only took an hour to install, it really was plug n play.
Matches the Prius dash materials exactly (as I said before).
NAV Screen is not bad, and is a touch screen (updating the map is a PAIN)
The iPod control is good, but I am using an iPhone 4 and the Head Unit will sometimes act like the ipod is playing, (shows song names and elapsed time) but no audio. Hmmm. Finally figured out for some reason I need to go into iPod on the phone and select "Dock Connector" instead of "MD" each time - weird.
DVD Player works well (though I will never use this feature).
Sound quality is far superior to the Toyota JBL Head Unit (obvious right away).
Once the map is updated (a pain - see below) the unit loads quickly and the voice guidance is ok (NOT great)
Steering Wheel controls all work (except the Toyota "talk-to" button)
Negatives:
The NV7TPR1 really feels like a solid product, BUT each feature has its own software that feels klunky and totally separate from the other features.
BlueTooth is so-so. Everytime I get a call on my iPhone, the phone rings but instantly the Head Unit disconnects from BlueTooth. I can make outgoing calls from the Head Unit screen but incoming is flaky (a real disappointment).
There is no way to "hold" the map magnification level once its started on your route. You can + or - the magnification, but the map reverts back to its 100% level in about 5 seconds. Annoying if you need the "big picture" like "Is The Silicon Valley Freeway, east or west of where i am right now?"
Getting the Map SD card out of the unit to update is a nightmare (trust me, trying to buy and install the map update for $59 from some website in korea through PayPal was not enjoyable. Ughh.)
The NV7TPR1 does NOT speak Street Names unfortunately.
If you want to search for a POI (point of interest i.e. Macy's) instead of assuming you want to look in the city where you are, it requires you to type in a city which is annoying. (Who wants to type Rancho Cucamonga over and over to search for McDonald's?)
The unit isnt all bad. I have had success in updating the map finally (also improved the voice making it louder and clearer.) Music sound quality is very good.
Its a geeky type of unit that requires patients to figure all of the features.
I am used to Acura navigation, so needless to say this doesn't compare. But an Acura doesn't get 52mpg either so its a trade off. I have heard the stock Toyota Prius Nav is awful so I can't complain about spending $814.
Overall I am pleased with the unit - having used GPS systems in rental cars etc this one isn't the worst but as I said, after installing and using the Myron and Davis NV7TPR1 I wouldn't pay more than $814, its not worth it.*** Update ***
So, I have been using the NV7TPR1 Toyota Prius Navigation and Media Unit for about 3 weeks. My original review is still accurate, but I wanted to add a few things I have discovered after living with the device daily.
First, I like the NV7TPR1 more now than I did when it was installed. Why?
I am more used to it's quirky software and decided to buy a used iPod Nano to leave in the car and always attached. This makes life easier since I am not constantly fishing for the iPod cable because I really like the interface on the touch screen. I just realized I can select songs from the iPod individually on the Nav touch screen which is really nice.
The NV7TPR1 has a virtual CD function which seems to be commonplace now, but what I dont like is that only commercial audio cd's can be added to the unit's memory (i.e. I have .mp3 cd's but the unit wont copy them to its memory for some reason?)
About the Navigation UI --
I hate to complain since this is a very complex and feature filled device but...
The unit always wants to keep a very close view of the road when driving. Yes, there is a Zoom out button (-) but it takes tapping it about 20 times to get a reasonable "high level" view of the area. Then, the all detail on the map disappears (street/freeway names etc) a VERY BAD DESIGN. The google map/nav on my iphone is so much better. This is still a big disappointment.
I think Myron Davis needs to switch map/software vendors to maybe Navteq?
There is also a problem with the "night" view. When the Prius headlights are on, the LCD screen dims slightly. But its way too bright in a dark vehicle. There are no other settings for brightness (yes in the Nav there is but not for the units other screens i.e. iPod)
I'm still not ready to sell my factory Prius stereo on ebay, I like the NV7TPR1 but I still need to be convinced that it will be reliable. Stay tuned.UPDATE 6/2011
Final update on the NV7TPR1.
At this point, I am pleased that I bought and had this unit installed. I was in a non- nav 2010 Prius recently and it looks really sad without an LCD screen (Toyota should have made Nav standard on the Prius in my opinion.)
The BLUETOOTH problems with the iPhone 4 seem to be fixed and stable. I replaced my black iPhone4 with a new White iPhone4 model, and I really believe Apple improved or fixed some consistent Bluetooth problems with the new model. In short, it works perfectly - in calls, outcalls, history, streaming music etc all work correctly on the NV7TPR1 touch screen (and with the Prius steering wheel controls as I wrote earlier). The unit does NOT give access to your phonebook/contacts, and there is no way to add them to the Nav unit (as I could with the Prius factory JBL head unit) I never used that feature because basically it was a nightmare to setup even the Prius Tech expert at the Toyota Dealership couldn't figure it out.
iPod music, search, etc all work as expected on the Nav touch screen. There is no album artwork as I think u can get on a new BMW.
The weakest part of the NV7TPR1 remains the actual Navigation and maps.
My opinion hasn't changed on this at all. Its really an awful device for navigation - the POI's are minimal and it routinely thinks the destination is on the other side of a freeway. Same problem with my house -- the previous map version didnt have this problem. But the $60 map update (see above) has all sorts of new problems and directional inaccuracies.
It annoyed me that Myron Davis support assured me I had the latest map software, which wasn't true at all. I had to pay for the update after I just bought the NV7TPR1 - not good Customer Service in my view.
The voices used for navigation are really bad, especially the very low volume level. No matter what setting I choose the voice is so low I can't even hear it in the Prius which is odd because the previous software version worked great. The unit also cuts the audio completely when speaking which isnt very pleasant. It should "reduce" the music volume like the iPhone navigation does. Actually, this is really annoying.
I have not used a Rosen unit in a Prius but i'm guessing it would still be a better choice and at $999 from Frank auto in San Diego I wish I had gone that route myself.

KENWOOD DNX9960 eXcelon In-Dash 2-DIN AV Navigation System w/ Built-in Bluetooth 6.95" Review

(More customer reviews)I had high hopes for the successor to the most excellent DNX9140 (which I own in my pick-up truck). The DNX9960's new UI is quite slick, and it works really well. Kenwood is shooting for an iPhone-like UI on the main screen. They did a decent job with it. Other than that, the basic features and functions of the stereo, iPod integration, Bluetooth, and navigation system are all identical to the aforementioned 9140...
Except: The "free" NAVTEQ traffic add-on isn't free. It comes with a catch: advertisements. On the main navigation screen, you will get pop-up ads for local businesses. They are, in my opinion, very tedious, distracting, and bothersome. And there's no way to disable them other than to disable NAVTEQ.
Consider this point very carefully before purchasing this unit. I really think Kenwood screwed the pooch with this move, and had I known this before hand, I'd have just purchased another 9140 for my car. Caveat Emptor, as the saying goes...

Blaupunkt Chicago IVDM-7002 - DVD player with LCD monitor / AV receiver Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased the Chicago to be the center piece for my car's multimedia system. In addition I installed a Kenwood four channel amp, an Alpine center channel amp/speaker and two headrest video monitors for the back seats. I also hooked up my XM satellite Skyfi2 unit through a FM modulator linked up through the radio antenna. I used the existing speakers and subwoofer that came with the car stereo unit.
The first problem I encountered was with the installation directions. They are very vague with no detail--just a chart showing the wires. As a fairly experienced amateur installer I figured out most of the wires but was unsure how to connect the parking brake wire. Turns out if you ground it, it allows full time video regardless of parking brake position (not safe but I was not sure of the alternative and Blaupunkt customer service was useless). Frankly too little information is a theme with Blaupunkt. They don't explain anything in the instructions including what the features are supposed to do.
Good Features:
**Great Video Screen
**Clean Sound
**Lots of inputs (3 extra video/audio inputs)
**Two video/audio outputs - great for 2 rear video monitors
**Can handle DV-X navigation system (I did not install this feature)
**Can handle rear view camera (not needed for my car but nice in a bigger vehicle)
**Good 7 band EQ feature - a great improvement over my old bass and treble control
Weak Features
**Bad Instructions - both install and user manual
**Cannot play movie (DVD) sound to rear speakers only - cannot seem to stop Dolby sound separation during DVD play so the whole car has to listen to the video - I guess I'll look into installing a wireless headphone system off of one of the extra sound outputs (my rear video monitors cannot handle sound which may have helped solve this problem).
**Terrible customer support from Blaupunkt USA
**Too much dependence upon the remote control - lose it and you cannot do much with your system
In terms of installation - this radio is much more difficult to install than a simple head unit. You have two parts (the head unit and the brain) and a whole lot of wires to figure out. If you use amps (i.e. the pre amp outputs like I did) you immediately cut out the need for ten wires coming out of the brain. In the end I only used three wires from the brain harness (power x 2 and the remote on wire for my amps).
Overall I am disappointed with the system in terms of movie playback. I am experiencing a lot of problems trying to get the system to do what I want in terms of controlling the sound. Blaupunkt did a terrible job with their instructions and their customer service is just as bad. The radio and CD playback are very good and my XM SkiFi2 has never sounded better. I got this unit for about half the cost of a similar unit from Kenwood or Alpine. For the price I guess I got a good deal. In terms of construction quality this unit is on par with those units (versus a lower quality Jenson unit that I would not expect to hold up over the long term - I also have my personal reservations about the Pioneer unit but it may be excellent).

Kenwood DNX7180 6.95" Nav/DVD Receiver Review

(More customer reviews)Where do I start... picked this up at best buy... had it installed by the guys there... they sucked but that's not what this review is about.
Firstly... the is my first review ever... I'm writing this because I don't want anyone else to buy this pos.
For $1200 it better "work"
1. It locked up 1 day after getting it.
2. It became super sluggish before it locked up.
3. The manual said the only way to fix it after a lock up was to hit the reset button in the bottom left corner. This reset the whole receiver to factory defaults. (omg i want to punch someone)
4. The DSP sounds horrible compared to how it sounds when I bypass it.
Kenwood messed this up big time... here's what probably happened.
1. they needed to meet a deadline to have the features complete
2. there wasn't enough time to optimize the features
3. they called it "complete" and shipped it with the worst quality ever
I'll never buy a kenwood receiver again. Their commitment to quality is non existant.

(More customer reviews)This is a great double din touch screen radio. The Detachable face plate is Golden for avoiding broken windows and a stolen stereo. I bought the Stereo wire harness for my 2001 nissan Xterra and the JVC KS-U30 usb video Cable for ipod and iphone. I have an Iphone 4. I did NOT need an installation kit for my car in order for the radio to fit, it fit into the same slot as the factory radio. I installed everything my self and it all works perfectly. I've had the Stereo for over a month now and it still works great. The Motion X app DOES work on the radio display. For all of the people saying that JVC is falsely advertising the app to work on their radios, you are All Mistaken. If you can't get it to work, its because you don't know how to set the radio up, not because the radio is defective. You have to play with the display inputs in settings to get the thing to work. Its not rocket science, I'm sure they'll get it; that or they have bought an imitation or the wrong jvc cable. For me the JVC Cable is a MUST for this stereo to get the most out of it. Any way, the sound is immensely better than my factory radio, the equalizer is great. The dvd image and iphone videos image are awesome, and the sound like I said is amazing. If you play with the av in display inputs from settings, you can use other iphone apps like vevo and stream music videos to your display, make sure you have a good data plan. You can Control your music library form the stereo or from the ipod. You can also hear tune in radio over the car speakers as well. The local radio stations all pick up like they should. You can customize the background of the display using a regular usb pen drive with pictures, you have to load and open the picture first, then go to settings and display to capture the photo. also easy. To watch dvd videos on the go, easy as pie, Youtube it.... at your own risk and I don't recommend it, just in case... You can also stream music from your phone by bluetooh to the stereo flawlessly. The only down side is the bluetooth speaker that comes with the stereo, I have it mounted on the back of the steering wheel and people say they can hear me only some of the time. I have to get a new speaker and see if it works better. The stereo does download your contacts and recent and missed calls. nice touch. The Bluetooth adapter comes installed in the stereo body, so if you don't see it in the packaging, don't freak out. Front aux works as it should for any mp3 player or ipod if you don't have the jvc cables. The buttons on the front are well made and not flimsy, the changing colors are cool, or you can set one to be steady. RDS only works if its available in your area I believe, I don't get the song names but I do get the station names for the regular radio. I don't have SAT radio so I don't if RDS works for that, it should though. The Touch Screen works great for all the buttons on the screen, it's sensitive so you don't have to press hard, you can also turn up or down volume by making a circle in the center, or next or previous track by swiping from the center to the left or right. All in all I think it was a Great Buy, I don't Regret it at all, and I'd buy it again if I had to. I chose the 6.1 inch over the 7 inch model because I like having the volume and menu buttons in the front, and the aux input with the 7 in doesn't have. I also had a rear camera installed and when its active you would think your watching a movie in 1080... The monitor is a very nice size and since it was nicely installed it looks like it came standard. When the Navigation is on and you have music playing it really does practically mute the music to give the directions that are required. In that aspect it is much better than the previous Kenwood (the one with the flipout screen). It was definately worth the purchase. Just make sure you dont get it at Car toys directly the best price was here on amazon. I also got the steering wheel control and that works great also...Make sure you add the ipod connector. I havent figured out how to do the split screen yet....but it does show semi nav on the bottom of the screen when you have it on audio and vice versa on Nav it shows the music at the bottom.

First up, I had the reset issue that some owners have experienced with this model and also the DNX-9960 model. This has been fixed with an easy to load firmware update off the Kenwood website. If the FW on your unit is 1.0.0, then update as other slight improvements have been made to the iPod interface.
My main reason to choose the Kenwood was the Garmin navigation which I've used for several years and prefer over other SatNav systems. Could be just familiarity but I do like its no-nonsense interface. Access to readily available red-light and speed camera POIs and ability to upload all my existing favorites were also features for me.
As a radio/CD/DVD/iPod player, it's a very flexible unit. The comprehensive settings available across all audio/video sources mean any owner should be able to fine tune the unit to their listening preferences. You can configure just about every conceivable aspect whether it's EQ, position, balance or fader, spacial enhancement and so on. You can add a reversing camera which activates on selecting reverse gear. Plus you don't need to use a Kenwood camera. You can choose a CCD if you prefer over CMOS.
In my own case, I've retained the stock speakers at this stage and the improved sound over the standard Toyota head unit made by Fujitsu Ten, is wuite noticable, especially in the bass and treble ranges. As it is I don't see any reason to invest in an amp or replacement speakers.
The only reason I did not award a 5 star rating is that the interface which is easy to use, is a bit slow to respond and sometimes needs multiple touches to get a response at all. This is annoying as it distracts you while driving and as such it could shift your focus off the road. This is far from ideal. I tend now to ensure my sources are set up before driving. That is, try not to change CDs or change playlists on the iPod feature while driving. I have had my unit setup to play DVDs while driving but only use music DVDs. A nice touch is the ability to have a video window on the Nav screen. A quick touch hides this feature if the law is watching! I've fitted a PAC Audio SWI-JACK steerring wheel control unit interface to use the factory controls with the head unit. They work well but there is a slight delay in response. I guess this is because the controls must be translated in the box and this unfortunately is not instantaneous. You get used to it though.
You can also customise the boot screen which I have done to make it look more like a factory unit. All these features make the Kenwood a very desireable unit. While the Alpines look very nice too, the Garmin SatNav was the clincher for me and overall I am very happy. I'd probably rate it a 4.5 stars if I could but not quite a 5 as it does have some slight imperfections, but these are not enough to prevent me recommending the 7160/7360.

BUY THIS IN-DASH DVD PLAYER!
LoL, but seriously... this is far better than the competition. Not only is the price better, but the features and function are better. I haven't had any problems getting this to read thumb drives, media cards, dvd-r's, and even my iPhone works with it flawlessly.
The only little nit-pick I have about it is that the backgrounds are kinda bland and you can't use custom backgrounds. . . but the ones they do provide offer more than enough "pizazz" to make this just a slight letdown.
Moving on to features. The bluetooth works very well, especially with the supplised microphone installed and ran up to your visor. I've made some test calls and they were very clear on both ends. No complaints here!
The video quality is quite good and load-times are really fast! I have this connected to two headrest monitors as well and it streams video effortlessly without a hitch!
If you're looking for an affordable in-dash doubledin dvd solution, with bluetooth even.. look no further than this JVC unit!
