Touch is stopes working after less then a month. Called audio saving and they said send it back and they will send me a new unit. So I'm sending it back today, so we will see how this goes. Coustemer service is great so far. Hoping that when I get my new unit it will work without any problems because I like all the features this unit has. I'll update when I recieve my new you in a few days.

Jensen VM9512 7-Inch Motorized Touch-Screen Multimedia Receiver Review

(More customer reviews)First, let me say this - if you actually pay the $899.99 MSRP you'll be wasting a LOT of money. If you've gone through the effort to look for reviews of this product, then do some dedicated searching and you'll find online stores selling this product for around $420 (as of March of 2008.)
At $420, this unit is a decent value. I bought this stereo because I took a new position that forces me to live away from home and travel 10-hours round trip on the weekends. I wanted something that would allow me to play MP3's from a memory drive instead of messing with CD's. This stereo has an SD card input and a remote unit which can be mounted under your dash or elsewhere (within about 3 feet of the headunit) which provides a USB slot among other inputs. The SC card drive seems to have its issues. Jensen claims it can read up to a 4GB card, but it won't read mine. I read in an online forum that you have to have a particular brand of SD card, but I cannot confirm that. In my opinion, a 4GB card should be a 4GB card and it shouldn't matter who made it. However, if I plug the 4GB card into a USB adapter and plug it into the USB slot, it works just fine.
My issues come with the user interface. MP3 titles (of which I use almost exclusively) only present the first 15-or-so characters of each title on the screen. This means you can either see the track title, or the artists name, but not both. I have had to create clever file-titling tricks so that I can find the song I want. (For those interested, I rename each MP3 with the artists's first initial, a dash, the song title, a space-dash-space, and the full artist name. Ex: M-Push - Matchbox 20") This of course forced me to rename 200 mp3's... As Kevin James once put it, "A lot of work for nooooot that much fun..." In addition, you cannot use the up/down buttons on the unit or remote to scroll through songs WHILE a song is playing. Instead you have to press tiny buttons on the touch-screen to scroll, which often results in scrolling too far, accidentally selecting a song instead of pressing the button, or hitting the stop button, which is very close to the down-arrow. This is not to say that the Touch screen is innacurate - it is in fact just the opposite. Some of the buttons however are just a little too small.
A few other annoying attributes - there is no "randomize" button on the unit. The unit will randomly scan through your MP3's, but you have to select "Random" from your remote control. I cannot fathom why they didn't give that option on the unit's face or screen. Sometimes the unit cannot decide whether to open its screen when you turn the car on - sometimes it will, sometimes it won't. The "autodim" feature seems completely inoperable. This forces you to change the brightness of the screen every day and night. The DVD player often seems to get confused, and sometimes will show disc errors or take at least a solid minute before beginning playback. This will cause you to insert a disc and forget that you did so by the time it starts playing. This especially seems to be an issue when the unit has gotten hot after extended use. The bluetooth interface with phones is easy to set up and use, but very limited in it's usage. I would like it to notify me when I receive text messages, and I have read (though not experienced) that if you have the volume low or muted, you will not hear when a phone call comes in.
Many users have complained about the screen being washed out by sunlight, but I say "What do you expect?" It's a screen. Take your TV or monitor outside in bright sunlight and tell me how well you can see it. Turn the brightness all the way up and tilt the screen down and you can usually see it well enough.
So why four stars? Well, this unit pretty much does everything it says it will do, and it does it pretty easily, without much fussing, and does it all at a reasonable price (again, read the first paragraph.) It has already provided plenty of entertainment during 20+ hours of driving and quite frankly, I still think it's "pretty cool." Find a product that does everything "just right" and you'll pay this unit's MSRP plus a lot more.
Do note that any desire to drive recklessly on the highway because you're watching "KITT" engage the Super Pursuit Mode on an episode of Knight Rider is not the fault of Jensen, myself, or David Hasselhoff.

Kenwood Excelon KVT-696 DVD Receiver Review

(More customer reviews)It's everything that's advertised. Connectivity is great (when the XM Radio isn't stuck "checking" forever). The main problem is the user interface looks like something from the '90's. You can't even see the entire names of songs because only 16 characters are displayed. It's jagged and ugly. For such a high-tech product (and market) I'm kinda shocked that the interface is so pathetic. Take a cue from the iPod (or maybe more realistically Android) and make it pretty and easy to use. The interface essentially hasn't changed at all in the last several years through several product revisions. I also used the KVT-512 and it was nearly identical. This is not good.

I was there for about 7 months and was GREATLY agravated with the cell phone service (I should say lack of service) in most of the area and undependable in most of the rest of the area. Once I broke down and spent the money it was well worth it. It is too bad I waited 4 months to do it. I went back and purchased another power supply and antenna to install in my camping trailer as I live in it when working out of town which is most of the time. Contact home to my wife and children is obviously very important and necessary to keep my sanity and my relationships with them. I have not found any area yet that I don't have service. I have recently purchased an air card for my laptop and it helps with the speed and dependability of that service too. I highly recommend this item to anyone who wants or needs cell phone service.

Kenwood Kiv-Bt900 AM/FM/USB Receiver with Bluetooth(R) Review

(More customer reviews)It seems to me that some less that perfect early firmware has given this otherwise phenomenal HU a somewhat bad rap. Kenwood probably should have done more QA before release, but show me a software vendor that doesn't have the same problem. I've been running this guy for a week now and couldn't be happier, so I feel the need to do my part to increase its review standings! I had a lengthy list of mandatory criteria, and this was the _only_ HU on the market that satisfied all of them. Specifically:
- Rear mounted iPod an aux cables for clean installation. Contrary to what other reviewers have said, I think this is a huge win (especially vs. the Pioneer decks). Who wants a mess of spaghetti in front of their stereo? It took an extra hour to disassemble the center console and route the cables properly, but it was the "right way" to do it.
- Variable color display/buttons. This one really narrowed the field, and I'm surprised how many decks can't do this. I was replacing the factory stereo in a BMW, and for those who haven't been in one at night, _every_ lighted gauge, button, display, etc. is all the very same orangish-red color. A bright blue stereo would have looked hideous (*cough* Alpine).
- Integrated BT. As others have stated, this HU can't do streaming audio via BT, which is probably the only real con I'd cite. That said, my primary desire for BT was hands free, and it works great. Just in case Kenwood is reading though, I do think it would be super cool if they could pull the profile photos for my contacts and display them the same way they do album art from the iPod....
- Seamless iPod integration, including video. Check. Works great on both of my current and previous gen nanos. As another reviewer stated, you have to wait for the album art to skip to the next song, but there are several display modes available, some of which don't load the artwork and aren't affected if that's really a big deal to someone.
- Flexible, intuitive interface. The configuration options are very robust, and I found myself on several occasions thinking "geez, I wish I could do X", only to discover shortly thereafter that I could do X, Y and Z.
- Firmware updateable. With a deck this complex, this is mandatory in my opinion. No one is going to get it right on version 1.0, even with extensive in-house QA. I'm a software engineer by trade, and know from first hand experience how adept consumers at coaxing bugs out into the light. I used mine a few days before updating it and had some of the problems others have cited (mic drops, random source shifts, etc.), but absolutely no problems since updating it. It has the capability for a reason, so update the unit first thing!
- Good aesthetics and build quality. This is certainly subjective, but I'm appalled by how ugly some aftermarket decks are and how flimsy some of their control mechanisms are! Simple, clean lines and sturdy please.
- Good sound quality. I didn't do extensive comparison testing, but have been happy with previous Kenwood's I've owned this unit certainly outperforms the stock HU.

IDA-X100M Alpine MARINE Multimedia Head-unit with USB and iPod Control Review

(More customer reviews)I received the IDA-X100m for installation into a 180 Bowrider (2000 Crownline). My boat came with a cassette deck (what they didn't have CDs in 2k??), so obviously it was going to have to go away.
I recently purchased a Pioneer MVH-P8200 for my RV about 2 weeks previous. That deck is also a AV receiver with Iphone integration and without a CD player. Since all of my media is digital, I had become used to having to burn CDs for use in the car which was both a waste of time and money but easy enough. That being said, this generation of decks which provides support for digital only is the future and is perfect for customers like me. So my Pioneer is a similar unit, large display with a single control wheel and advanced Ipod integration - no CD player wanted or included. (I have a iPhone 4). Nice deck, less expensive than the Alpine and a good fit for the type of usage it will get in the RV and advantage to the Pioneer for also having front mounted USB and aux inputs. Thats nice and the only advantage over the Alpine (other than being 100$ cheaper) however I do wish if I had it to do over again, I would rather have the Alpine instead:
So that out of the way, now looking at Marine models, I actually started my research slightly backwards because I knew I wanted a transom remote control, I considered how those looked and performed from Kenwood, Pioneer, Sony and Alpine, and the Alpine Remote Commanders are by far superior in terms of display, water proofing and functionality. That led me to the Alpine Marine Decks, and thus to the IDA-X100M. I was first struck by the ergonomics of the unit. One of the things I did not like about the Pioneer deck is that the control wheel isn't quite large enough which makes it tough to use to navigate. The Alpine knob is oversize, easy to grasp and the navigation makes sense. I have no problem operating it while driving the boat. Its easy to use and operate. The display is great and the illumination sharp. Connecting to my iPhone was simple and easy just as it should be, and I found the navigation of my music libraries was simple and intuitive. Unit came with everything I needed to install and since my boat only had 1 pair of speakers, I choose to use the internal amp for those and as expected was a huge improvement over its replacement and plenty of power. I have a external 1000w mono Fosgate Amp connected to a T1D12 sub woofer and the dedicated sub woofer RCAs (and control) made connecting it a breeze. Obviously there are also RCA outs for additional front/rear as well. Sound quality is typical Alpine - sounds great. FM radio seem sensitive, sounds good.
High WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor). Wife loves the look, found it easy to browse and find the music she wanted without having to read the instructions which is important. I have not yet hooked up the Marine Commander, but am anticipating from watching the demo videos that it will be awesome. I don't anticipate watching videos on the small screen, but appreciate having the option, as well as satellite radio, HD radio and the other add on components available. I like being able to use other USB storage including SD/MMC cards, however apparently unable to display the album artwork (why not?) is a downer. You only get that when connected to your ipod/iphone. Not a big deal to me, as I will always have my phone with me anyways, and I also appreciate that the ringer and email/text notification sounds come through the speakers so I don't miss calls when the music is pumping. I dont have the optional bluetooth. For me that is a must have in a car, but on the water, mic integration and ambient noise make it a non starter as well as my desire to have fun, not be on the phone in the water. I do however want to at least know I am getting a call/txt/email so if its important I can return the call.
Highly recommended for anyone wanting to go pure digital.

Myron & Davis NV7TPR1 2008-2011 Toyota Prius In-Dash Navigation System Review

(More customer reviews)I have been looking for an in-dash Navigation System for the 2010 Toyota Prius for about a year now. The Toyota Dealer wanted a jaw dropping $4,000 for the factory system (yea right). The next best thing I could find was the Rosen a good quality OEM unit but hard to find and pricey.
So rather than give up, I checked out this Myron & Davis unit which is also an OEM type of unit. The photos on Amazon don't really do it justice. It matches the Prius trim perfectly and the screen is much bigger in the car than the photos suggest.
Strangely, the price of this unit changes almost daily from $818 (what I paid) to $1,400+ on Amazon which is a bit weird. Honestly, I would not buy this unit for more than $818 (plus the JBL cable and the iPod cable all extras....welcome to the crazy world of after market car audio).
Seems odd there are no Owner Reviews of the NV7TPR1 so thought I would write one. I am replacing the Toyota JBL Head Unit which I really disliked from day 1 especially the Satellite radio which sounded terrible.
First the good stuff about this Unit:
Only took an hour to install, it really was plug n play.
Matches the Prius dash materials exactly (as I said before).
NAV Screen is not bad, and is a touch screen (updating the map is a PAIN)
The iPod control is good, but I am using an iPhone 4 and the Head Unit will sometimes act like the ipod is playing, (shows song names and elapsed time) but no audio. Hmmm. Finally figured out for some reason I need to go into iPod on the phone and select "Dock Connector" instead of "MD" each time - weird.
DVD Player works well (though I will never use this feature).
Sound quality is far superior to the Toyota JBL Head Unit (obvious right away).
Once the map is updated (a pain - see below) the unit loads quickly and the voice guidance is ok (NOT great)
Steering Wheel controls all work (except the Toyota "talk-to" button)
Negatives:
The NV7TPR1 really feels like a solid product, BUT each feature has its own software that feels klunky and totally separate from the other features.
BlueTooth is so-so. Everytime I get a call on my iPhone, the phone rings but instantly the Head Unit disconnects from BlueTooth. I can make outgoing calls from the Head Unit screen but incoming is flaky (a real disappointment).
There is no way to "hold" the map magnification level once its started on your route. You can + or - the magnification, but the map reverts back to its 100% level in about 5 seconds. Annoying if you need the "big picture" like "Is The Silicon Valley Freeway, east or west of where i am right now?"
Getting the Map SD card out of the unit to update is a nightmare (trust me, trying to buy and install the map update for $59 from some website in korea through PayPal was not enjoyable. Ughh.)
The NV7TPR1 does NOT speak Street Names unfortunately.
If you want to search for a POI (point of interest i.e. Macy's) instead of assuming you want to look in the city where you are, it requires you to type in a city which is annoying. (Who wants to type Rancho Cucamonga over and over to search for McDonald's?)
The unit isnt all bad. I have had success in updating the map finally (also improved the voice making it louder and clearer.) Music sound quality is very good.
Its a geeky type of unit that requires patients to figure all of the features.
I am used to Acura navigation, so needless to say this doesn't compare. But an Acura doesn't get 52mpg either so its a trade off. I have heard the stock Toyota Prius Nav is awful so I can't complain about spending $814.
Overall I am pleased with the unit - having used GPS systems in rental cars etc this one isn't the worst but as I said, after installing and using the Myron and Davis NV7TPR1 I wouldn't pay more than $814, its not worth it.*** Update ***
So, I have been using the NV7TPR1 Toyota Prius Navigation and Media Unit for about 3 weeks. My original review is still accurate, but I wanted to add a few things I have discovered after living with the device daily.
First, I like the NV7TPR1 more now than I did when it was installed. Why?
I am more used to it's quirky software and decided to buy a used iPod Nano to leave in the car and always attached. This makes life easier since I am not constantly fishing for the iPod cable because I really like the interface on the touch screen. I just realized I can select songs from the iPod individually on the Nav touch screen which is really nice.
The NV7TPR1 has a virtual CD function which seems to be commonplace now, but what I dont like is that only commercial audio cd's can be added to the unit's memory (i.e. I have .mp3 cd's but the unit wont copy them to its memory for some reason?)
About the Navigation UI --
I hate to complain since this is a very complex and feature filled device but...
The unit always wants to keep a very close view of the road when driving. Yes, there is a Zoom out button (-) but it takes tapping it about 20 times to get a reasonable "high level" view of the area. Then, the all detail on the map disappears (street/freeway names etc) a VERY BAD DESIGN. The google map/nav on my iphone is so much better. This is still a big disappointment.
I think Myron Davis needs to switch map/software vendors to maybe Navteq?
There is also a problem with the "night" view. When the Prius headlights are on, the LCD screen dims slightly. But its way too bright in a dark vehicle. There are no other settings for brightness (yes in the Nav there is but not for the units other screens i.e. iPod)
I'm still not ready to sell my factory Prius stereo on ebay, I like the NV7TPR1 but I still need to be convinced that it will be reliable. Stay tuned.UPDATE 6/2011
Final update on the NV7TPR1.
At this point, I am pleased that I bought and had this unit installed. I was in a non- nav 2010 Prius recently and it looks really sad without an LCD screen (Toyota should have made Nav standard on the Prius in my opinion.)
The BLUETOOTH problems with the iPhone 4 seem to be fixed and stable. I replaced my black iPhone4 with a new White iPhone4 model, and I really believe Apple improved or fixed some consistent Bluetooth problems with the new model. In short, it works perfectly - in calls, outcalls, history, streaming music etc all work correctly on the NV7TPR1 touch screen (and with the Prius steering wheel controls as I wrote earlier). The unit does NOT give access to your phonebook/contacts, and there is no way to add them to the Nav unit (as I could with the Prius factory JBL head unit) I never used that feature because basically it was a nightmare to setup even the Prius Tech expert at the Toyota Dealership couldn't figure it out.
iPod music, search, etc all work as expected on the Nav touch screen. There is no album artwork as I think u can get on a new BMW.
The weakest part of the NV7TPR1 remains the actual Navigation and maps.
My opinion hasn't changed on this at all. Its really an awful device for navigation - the POI's are minimal and it routinely thinks the destination is on the other side of a freeway. Same problem with my house -- the previous map version didnt have this problem. But the $60 map update (see above) has all sorts of new problems and directional inaccuracies.
It annoyed me that Myron Davis support assured me I had the latest map software, which wasn't true at all. I had to pay for the update after I just bought the NV7TPR1 - not good Customer Service in my view.
The voices used for navigation are really bad, especially the very low volume level. No matter what setting I choose the voice is so low I can't even hear it in the Prius which is odd because the previous software version worked great. The unit also cuts the audio completely when speaking which isnt very pleasant. It should "reduce" the music volume like the iPhone navigation does. Actually, this is really annoying.
I have not used a Rosen unit in a Prius but i'm guessing it would still be a better choice and at $999 from Frank auto in San Diego I wish I had gone that route myself.

(More customer reviews)I got this Unit WAY before any of the previous review does, so I already know how this unit works inside out.
yes it has the problem that previous reviewers say but, should we even call those *problems* ? I mean, some of the things could be easily fixed with a simple firmware update. This is Panasonic's first attempt to enter the US's In dash Navigation market. They have great Units in Japan, but I guess Panasonic Japan does not share information with their USA side. So they have to create this from scratch.
Let me list what this unit can do/cant do.
-It can Play MP3 on CD-R/RW, but it cannot read MP3 on DVD+R/RW/-R/-RW.
-It seems that it does not like bad quality CD-R, my friend's cheap CD-R having mad issue with this unit. but mine plays just fine. Well, we should all get quality stuff isnt it ?
-It takes a lot longer, sometimes failed to read DVD-R/RW disc.
-It's DVD playback is Region locked to Region 1, but is not hard to overcome that problem (I think its illegal to say it here)
-Map is based on Navteq's 2005 data, yes you got that right, unit that's out in 2007 still using 2005's map data(maybe because its cheaper, who knows), because I ran into couple of roads that has been changed, one even changed from 2 way into 1 way, almost got me killed. So you better MAKE SURE that you're in the right side of the road.
-Remember to select your route preference before you start your guide. because by default, it does not allow Highway, does not allow tolls, does not allow anything. that means, all local if possible. That might be cool for some people, but I didnt know about it the first time I use it, because my other Unit has the Allow toll and Allow highway option enabled by default. So I ended up spending like 3 hours on something that I suppose to be there in 1 and 1/2 hour.
-The route guidance is kind of funny, sometimes the shortest route that it shows does NOT mean its really the shortest. So if you know that you're already going the shortest route, do NOT listen to the unit.
-It plays back MP3 fine, quality is ok.
-CD Play back is fine, plays original disc no problem, if you want to use a backup, you better make sure the cd-R quality is good.
-You CANNOT record your inserted CD into the HDD. I have no idea what Panasonic is thinking on this one, because as far as I know, the map data used about 10GB of space, that means, in the other words, about 20GB of disc space is there to collecting dust. Maybe a future update will resolve this. who knows.
-HDD unit runs really fast, it takes less than 1 second to get the route out, by default, it shows you 3 routes.
-This unit runs really hot, yes it has a fan behind but ... I would suggest you to turn the screen off if its not in use. it reduce the heat by maybe 30% (rough estimate)
-Screen is big enough, a bit bigger than Pioneer's 7" unit. and the screen is really clear, tried a lot of DVDs on it very good picture quality.
-Fast startup time, about 10 seconds or so.
-Oh yes, did I say the map is not very up to date? Maybe Panasoinc wants to get more money out from us. Anyway, the map data is FAR FROM complete. I cannot find some of the address at all, when I can just do a google search and it pops up right away.
-The way to enter address is kind of funky, you have to enter the way THEY want you to enter, for example, if you want to go 123 Avenue, there're couple of "possbilities", it could be 123th AVE, it could be 123 th AVENUE, 123th AVENUE, 123 AVE, or 123 AVENUE. Keep that in mind.
I still have more to say, but I'll leave those alone.
Is this a good unit ? I think so, if you're looking for fastest and cheapest price HDD unit that *works*, this is a unit for you. but you BETTER MAKE SURE, you try them out first at a store or something.
Im happy with this unit, hey I mean for couple hundred bucks, you get a HDD NAV with dvd playback ? My father's brand NEW CX-7 with all options loaded, all he got was a DVD navigation that cant even play DVD-videos!
Im also 100% sure that Panasonic will update this unit to bring more features out. So dont worry too much about it. Couple hundred bucks only, get it !

I have had this radio for about a day, and played with most of its features while wiring it up into the dashboard of a motorhome. This is simply the most bang for the buck available with all of the features that were desired... Navigation, Rear View Monitor, CD/DVD/VCD, AM/FM, Bluetooth and external Video input from another device.
The Radio interface is very basic. The radio is simply an AM/FM radio with no display of the INFO or data that is broadcast - and it is not an HD radio. But it has excellent quality audio played through the speakers on both the AM and FM bands. The display simply displays the 6 frequencies that have been programmed for that particular band.
The Bluetooth interface works well. If you play music on a streaming device, it will play through the radio's speakers. And you can make and receive calls through your Bluetooth phone.
GPS system works very well, as I had just plugged in the antenna, and as soon as I brought up the GPS, it showed exactly where I was on the map. I have not used it for navigation yet, but there are other reviews online that indicate the navigation software is adequate.
There are external jacks for displaying the DVD video and other screens on an external monitor and separate 4 channel audio outputs as well. The video and front R/L audio drive a larger monitor elsewhere in the RV.
The reverse video input works well. All you need to do it hook one of the wires in the supplied wiring harness up to the reverse light wire on your vehicle, and whenever you put your vehicle into reverse, the screen automatically switches to the rear video input, while continuing to play whatever audio source you were playing. If you have purchased and wired a reverse video camera on the back of your vehicle, you can always see what is behind you.
When playing DVDs, it is easy to step though the various sound tracks and other DVD features.
The secondary SD slot works with only older style SD cards with capacities up to 4GB. MP3s and videos can be on the SD cards or burned onto CDs or DVDs and played on this system.
It would be nice if there were some technical user type interface into the operating system of this box, but no information can be easily found on the internet. I would anticipate very little product support if you get into trouble with this box. It is better for the do-it-yourself types who want a lot of features and can support themselves. If you are that type, then you can save over $400 with this versus a comparable product with a name brand. There are some very similar products listed on EBay, directly from China. The screen shots are very similar to the XOVision with minute differences in each screen, but the button placement, SD card slots and the way the video screen folds down are all similar.

Received no help in the actual setup, but it was a breeze, a little help from the book, and rest was very easy to figure out. It is joy to operate. The Bluetooth phone works perfect with the unit, paired first time. Sound is great both directions. Minimal steps (touch screen) to go from one source to the other. USB plays my MP3 player, and works great playing my 1800+ songs off of my SD card. The NAV is as good as Garmin's if not better. The street pronounciations are much more understanable, the female voice clear and pleasent. Split screen, etc, etc. It was a real joy to have everything work right out of the box. So many great features, it may take me 2 months to set them up...but 10 minutes to get working to use it...Love it. No, I don't work for JVC, I am a retired old Army Sergeant Major who's loving it! Best money I ever spent. Bought it at Amazon (Barney's) excellent service. Postscript...had this unit 7 months now..(1/16/2010) still totally pleased. Not a single problem.

(More customer reviews)I got the kvt-512 along with the kna-510 installed in my 06 TSX. So far, all is good and no real complaint. The unit is loaded with features and options so what you can do with it is limitless. I have this unit connect through my factory head unit but the sound is still pretty good. The dvd is nice and clear and the navi works great. The touch screen is very responsive as well. I really like the fact that it plays mp3s off of a dvd. It is also convenient that it comes with a usb port to play mp3s off of. You can buy a ipod adaptor but why when you can get a cheap usb drive to play your music out of. I have it connected to a 8 gig thumb drive(bought for like $15) that I perminantly keep on there since it is plenty to hold all of my music.
You have to touch the screen on a unmarked location to activate the menu control options which is something I need to get used to. So far...I am definitely enjoying my new toy.

This unit is much more intuitive and easy to use, far more versatile with the number of inputs and seems to be a much higher quality product to boot. Everything is set up to be as easy to use as possible. Flash memory and iPod control are plug-and-play. It simply couldn't be any easier! The only reason this got 4 stars rather than 5 is because it only has 2 sets of outputs. One more pair and this unit would be perfect!

Pioneer AVIC-D3 In-Dash GPS Navigation System with DVD Player Review

(More customer reviews)Just finished installing the D3 in my '06 Scion tC this weekend. In addition to the head unit I also installed the Bluetooth adapter/iPod cable/PAC steering wheel control interface and XM tuner. At this point I am still unsure if I am going to install the reverse cam. This is my third Pioneer head unit, but first Navigation unit.

The unit looks very nice installed with the included mounting hardware, much better than in the photos, I might add. The screen is very bright, and the touch interface works very well. The XM interface is very nice, especially when the Nav disk is in loaded, as it will then display station and category logos along with the standard XM track/artist info.
Here are some of the pros and cons I have come up with in the two days I have had to fool around with it:
Pros:
-XM or Sirius, it stinks to have to make a decision on a head unit based on your sat. radio prefs (Eclipse comes to mind here)
-Superb XM interface
-Solid iPod interface with cool iPod scroll wheel on-screen image (although no search function)
-So far the Nav has worked very well
-Vehicle diagnostics are fun, although not for any practical purposes
-Pioneers parametric EQ has always been great, it is even better with the enhanced visualization of the large color LCD
-Great internal sub-woofer controls including high pass filters, as well as low pass output and sub level controls
-Customization options are nice as you can match your cars instrumentation color
-DVD quality is very good
-Phone call quality is very good from the feedback I have gotten from callers (mounted the mic on the right side of my visor with the included clip)
-Night mode: when you flip on your headlights you can choose how dim you want the screen to get, and the navigation screen has a night mode which uses darker colors for the map, and is much easier on the eyes
Cons:
-No ability to have different EQ settings for each source as far as I can tell (source custom EQ)-this is a major disappointment, i.e. XM output is usually very flat compared to CD/MP3 sources, requiring a lot of messing around with the EQ to get it sounding right. Having to change EQ depending on source is a major pain
-No automatic sound levelizer (adjusts volume level depending on road noise)-even my stock Scion/Pioneer head unit had this
-No remote ($15 dollar option at [...], come on Pioneer, I know it's an inexpensive unit, but still)
-Some background noise at times, but I have concluded that it does not affect sound quality, as much of it only occurs when no music is playing (i.e. caused by the button tones or nav guidance)
- Having to use two little satellite antennas is silly- I don't understand why they couldn't have designed the XM tuner to be able to accept the sat. signal from the Nav antenna, i.e. pull the sat. signal through the IP bus
-I have still not been able to load my phone book into the unit and I tried both my cingular sonyericsson and my nextel blackberry-have checked forums and others are having similar issues, I'm guessing there will be a fix out soon as this is a brand new Bluetooth module
-No HD radio support
Overall I am very satisfied with the sound quality, interface, ease of use, and ability to customize the unit. I just wish it had the source custom EQ and the $170.00 Bluetooth module would load my address book.

Good:
This is a decent head unit with very good interface, screen clarity and DVD playback. Sound quality was very good considering I have no amp and I liked that sound options could be configured. I read reviews on other sites before buying and as advertised most of the functions worked. I was able to play DVDs, MP3 CDs, and regular CDs. The bluetooth worked ok for audio transfer (with Nokia 6230 & Blackberry Pearl), and handsfree mic sounded ok on receiving end. I like the piano black with brushed chrome look and feel. I did not install the backup camera, and did not get the tv tuner unit in time for the install, but the aux-in port works fine.
Gripes:
I haven't gotten the ipod interface to work yet though - i currently have an Ipod nano (3rd gen). The Dual logo displays on the ipod, but the head unit keeps saying "connecting..." I think it may be a compatibility issue with the nano firmware version. Will check this out, but I can use the 3.5mm in jack as an alternative, and the nano does get charged using the ipod jack connection. I had to use a by-pass for the parkbrake - had a little trouble at first, but resolved this. Would have liked this unit to come with Divx and have more functionallity with the bluetooth - does not read call address book on blackberry pearl correctly. Tends to get warm quickly.
Overall:
This unit was professionally installed in a '04 "Corolla". Installation was quick and almost pain free (by-pass to parking brake took some time - I do not live in a state with video restrictions). I would recommend this unit to any one. Its a good sturdy unit with lots of features, and I could not find another unit at lower price vs reliability concerns.
