Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)If you don't mind the size and price, this is excellent hearing protection without losing situational awareness irrespective of where you shoot. This is a large, full-sized, bulky, solidly built, made-in-the-USA hearing protection with a 5-year warranty that works very well and is comfortable. It provides the maximum attenuation (33 dB NRR) for muffs of this type.
Pros:
1.Very quick response (fast "attack time") to high-pressure (>80 dB) sounds so you can still hear what's occurring around you (from yahoos at the range making "unsafe comments" to range commands from Range Safety Officers) between gun fire sounds.
2.Takes CR123 batteries instead of obscure "medical" batteries. Their earlier models required odd medical batteries. The ones I got use commonly available CR123 batteries. YOU MAY NEED TO SPECIFY AND ASK FOR THE MODEL THAT USES THE CR123 BATTERIES when ordering.
3.Very comfortable to wear for many hours.
Cons:
1.Lack of detail to construction. I see slight glue over-run at the junction between the leather and the muff.
2.Size is too large if you want to properly mount a rifle. You may consider the smaller version, but you would sacrifice a bit on hearing protection.
3.No detailed instructions that show the locations of the jumpers for the model I own. I may have the latest (4th generation) muffs, and I could not find detailed depiction of jumpers for my muffs. It really does not matter as the jumpers are very well labeled on the muffs, but when you pay so much money for hearing protection, I would expect attention to all details.
My hearing means the world to me and I also enjoy shooting my pistols a lot, so I sprung for the best. My frequent visits to an indoor 10-lane range allowed me to thoroughly test this electronic muff. Irrespective of caliber (.223 rifle, .22 cal, 9mm, .40 cal, 357 Magnum, .45 cal, etc.) the active sound attenuation works very well. I am also able to hear my surroundings, including the whirling of the air conditioning fan, someone dropping a bullet, or a spent casing landing on the ground. I have not tried plugging anything into the input plugs (such as to listen to scanner, music, etc.), but such feature may be helpful to someone who needs to hear his communications radio's audio discreetly at the range.
Operational hints:
I set the muff's gain to "high", but I did NOT turn up the ear muff's volume control because it hears TOO well! High gain setting simply meant that the microphones are twice as sensitive as the "low" setting (as per the manual for 3rd generation Pro Tac muffs). I also found that I received the maximum protection and benefit by making sure the ear muffs straps and cups are properly fitted onto my head and ears.
Would I purchase these ear muffs again? Yes. Would I recommend these to friends? Yes. What would I purchase next? Probably the Pro Ears Tac Slim Gold NRR 28 Ear Muffs with 2 Lithium 123a Batteries, solely for the ability to easily mount a rifle while wearing electronic ear protection.
