Elite Screens VMAX 2, Matte White 1.1 Gain, 100" Inch Diagonal, 16:9 Aspect Ratio Review

Elite Screens VMAX 2, Matte White 1.1 Gain, 100 Inch Diagonal, 16:9 Aspect Ratio

Overall this seems to be a decent screen and a good value. I've only had it for a few weeks, so I am not qualified to comment on the longevity of the motor or associated mechanical parts, but so far, so good. The image quality seems good, it was easy to install, and operation is easy using the wired-in control box. Now for my complaint: this thing comes with, by far, hands down, the world's worst remote control(s). Maybe this seems like nitpicking, especially at this pricepoint, but still... First off, the remote uses one of the tiniest batteries I have ever seen outside of a watch - size 27A - so good luck finding a replacement at your local convenience store. 2nd - the battery does not fit securely in place when inserted in the remote (it just sort of "floats" in between the springs for the battery contacts) so the battery comes loose at the slightest vibration, which is compounded by the fact that you can't access the battery unless you unscrew a tiny screw - so keep that eyeglass screwdriver handy. Luckily, it comes with both a RF AND an IR remote, so you can use your IR remote to "teach" a universal learning remote - as long as you can get the included IR remote to work long enough to do the teaching process. I finally got the Elite remote to work long enough to teach my universal remote - but it requires lots of patience while I moved the battery around until it hit "just the right spot." If you don't have a universal remote, factor in some extra money to buy one at the same time as the screen - otherwise you might heave the included remotes out the window before you have a chance to teach the codes to your universal.
As I said, overall this screen is a great value, and the screen itself seems to be well put together and solid. In the end, it's just a remote control - I would still buy this even knowing what I know now - but I needed to vent on this subject, if only to keep any other potential customers from being disappointed. Hope it helps, and happy viewing.

Denon DRA-397 AM/FM Multi Source/Zone Stereo Receiver w/ 80X2 Audiophile Power Review

Denon DRA-397 AM/FM Multi Source/Zone Stereo Receiver w/ 80X2 Audiophile Power
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First of all, I don't know why anyone would say this product is confusing. I'm no tech wiz, and I didn't need to consult the manual for basic operation. Programming in stations wasn't hard either.
But even so, this is a fairly picayune matter considering that a receiver is a device for listening to music (and other audio sources) and should be evaluated as such. What matters most is sound quality, and this receiver sounds excellent. No, it's not an audiophile product, but it's probably the best sounding receiver you'll find in production for this price range.
I've had mine for a few months and I'm very satisfied. I have it driving a pair of JBL HLS-610's which I consider to be about the same grade of product -- mass-market mid-fi producing great sound at an affordable price. Overall the sound is very pleasing; the bass is palpable and detailed, the highs are clear and smooth. The detail at low volumes is impressive, which in my opinion is what distinguishes a good amplifier from one that's just loud.
About the best thing one can say about a stereo component is that it allows them to hear things in their music they hadn't noticed before. This receiver has delivered that consistently. The phono stage is particularly nice; my records have never sounded better.
In contrast to commercial audio companies which deliver "big sound" by manipulating frequency response like crazy, the engineers at Denon have gone to the trouble of designing a stereo that adds very little coloration to your music. In fact, my favorite feature is the "pure direct" function -- basically a tone defeat on steroids -- which allows you to circumvent all the unnecessary circuitry to deliver a signal that's true to the original recording.
If I have any complaint about the product, it's that it's a bit bulky. I understand this is an artifact of the design. Still, it takes up a lot of room on the shelf. Also, the volume knob feels clunky.
I'll repeat that this stereo is not in league with truly high-end integrated amps or separates. You have to be prepared to spend a lot more money to get that level of performance (not to mention the cost of an audiophile inputs and loudspeakers). But if you're on a budget, or just don't want to pay at least twice as much for incremental improvements in sound, don't overlook this stereo. It might be the best value going.

Denon AVR-3808CI 7.1-Channel Multizone Home Theater Receiver with Networking Review

Denon AVR-3808CI 7.1-Channel Multizone Home Theater Receiver with Networking
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been waiting a while for "the perfect receiver". However, I have come to the conclusion that this is as close to perfect as I am going to find for my needs right now. I am using all 4 HDMI inputs (PS3, Oppo 980H, Directv HR20, and a Sony Vaio computer). The Denon has worked flawlessly with SACD, DVD-A, and lossless audio sources from my BluRay movies.
For sound quality, it is important to get the speakers setup properly. Denon's auto setup with the included mic makes this a very simple setup. I have heard that it helps to take measurements from all over the room, so I setup 5 listening locations. The sound quality is fantastic. I do have an spl meter, but I have not had it out to fine tune the setup just yet. It already sounds fantastic. The Oppo has the ability to send out a DSD multi-channel signal for its SACD and these sound fantastic on the Denon.
I am not really using the video upscaler very much since most of the signals I am inputting are already HD. In other words, the Denon mainly sends out the signals untouched, so it is hard to complain.
The ability to update the firmware over the internet connection is what I believe sets this receiver apart from the competition. For me, this was the deciding factor. With all of the new tech in these receivers, I do not want to have to carry the thing into a service location every time it needs an update.
I should mention that I played some music coming from my computer using the network interface and it worked okay. It did take a few seconds to retrieve license information for Yahoo Music DRM files, but I bet they improve on that in the future.
The downsides are small, but should be mentioned. The remote is okay for setting up the system, but it is going into a drawer with my other remotes now that I have my Harmony 880 universal programmed for all of the general functions that I need. Also, the GUI takes some getting used to. I like the ability to rename the inputs and choose what video inputs go with the audio inputs. However, it was not something that I picked up and setup in a few minutes. It is better than my old Denon AVR-3300, so at least they are going in the right direction!

Sony STR-DG800 7.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver with HDMI Passthrough Review

Sony STR-DG800 7.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver with HDMI Passthrough
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a follow up to my previous review on Sony STR-DG800 Receiver with HDMI Passthrough. I mentioned that if a HD DVD is plugged in to the DVD HDMI port on the Sony Receiver, there will be no audio coming from the Sony Receiver audio system as all audio and video signals are passed-thru (hense by-passed) directly to the televison. Consequently, you do not have the quality sound from your home entertainment center.
Well I found a work-a-round for this problem but it still require either an Optical Audio Cable or a Coaxial Audio Cable. It is similiar to the SAT/TV solution using the Optical Audio Cable that I memtioned in the previous review.
Coaxial Cable: You can plug a Coaxial Digital Cable coming from your HD-DVD player into the Coaxial Digital input port on the Sony receiver. This coaxial input port will work with the DVD HDMI input port to give you audio through the Sony receiver. Obvioulsy you will have to have a Coaxial Digital output on you HD-DVD Player.
Optical Cable: If your HD-DVD player only has an "Optical Audio Output", then plug the Optical Audio Cable into the "Optical Digital Video 1" port on the Sony receiver. After that, use the Sony Remote Control and follow the "re-assign" insturctions in the Sony Receiver Manual. You will be able "re-assign" the audio input from "Digital Video 1" to the "HDMI DVD" port. It takes patience, but in this way, you can overcome the drawbacks of the "HDMI Passthrough".
So now I do have audio to my home enterment system from both the Satellite HDMI port and the HDMI DVD Port, dispite the fact that these ports are designed to pass-through the audio to the television only.
Is is odd that the nice people at Sony Technical Support could NOT help me with this or any other solution for the problem. But I DO want to thank the fellows at J&R Electronic for brain storming these solutions with me.
Now that I have this work-a-round setup finished, I am raising my rating to four stars for this receiver. As of now, both the video and the audio from this receiver are everything I had hope for. Happy Birthday to me.

this unit is great.. first of all i purchaced this for the dvd and for the external dvd output it has for the tv in the roof of the truck those work flawlessly. i also purchased a rear view camera and together they work beautifully. but now the bad, i called spl to ask about the bluetooth capabilities of this unit and i was told that all of their techs were no longer working and there was no one to help me and there would be no one to help me . i was told to call amazon, who by the way has nothing to do with tech support for third party products. aside from that this is a great unit. i just don't know if i need another part to get this unit to work with my cell phone. definitly 4 stars though...

Elite Screens Cinetension 2 Tab Tensioned Premium Electric Projection Screen, 16:9 Aspect Ratio-100in (Cine White) Review

Elite Screens Cinetension 2 Tab Tensioned Premium Electric Projection Screen, 16:9 Aspect Ratio-100in (Cine White)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For the price I got for this electric and tab tensioned 100" screen from Elite, I thought I'd be getting a regular pull down screen from other manufacturers. Originally, I got a 92" plain jane Dalite white manual pull down and lived with it for several years. Overtime, it quickly developed waves and thus distortion and once noticeable, sidetracked me out of the action of a movie. In addition, I learned the meaning of hotspotting with this screen immediately after swapping it out with the Elite. While it was with my first foray into projector/screen HT experience, I had no prior experience to know any better. We enjoyed our movies nevertheless but things could have been in a much higher caliber as hindsight is always 20/20. Live and learn I guess.
When I switched out the screen for this Elite CineWhite, the first thing I notice is the evenness of illumination, no hot spotting, gorgeous colors and good contrast despite it being an essentially white screen. Everything was under control as far as the image goes--like a fine, aged wine compared to a regular beer. The black backing helps with the hot spotting big time and retained the brilliance on screen without leakage. The motor works well and kept the screen wide and flat that lent an air of professionalism and flair. Now, I feel immersed again in the movie experience as never before. I knew this could be done but just didn't realized it could be had in this price range. Thank you Elite Screens for your value proposition without compromise on performance. Now I am constantly looking forward to my next movie night.

Clarion VX409 6.5-Inch Double-DIN Multimedia Station with Touch-Panel Control Station Review

Clarion VX409 6.5-Inch Double-DIN Multimedia Station with Touch-Panel Control Station
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I installed this unit in my 2009 Subaru WRX. I removed it and returned it after 3 days.
The good:
-It has a good amount of power. I ran this to my stock speakers and they sounded much, much better than they did with the factory receiver.
-Good build quality. The physical unit feels well made. Mechanical flip face works smoothly, buttons and volume dial feel solid.
-It's cheap.
The bad:
-iPod integration is terrible. There is no way to easily scroll through artists/albums etc. You have to click an arrow to flip through each individual entry. This is OK if you have a couple albums on a nano, but not OK if you plan to connect an iPod with a large library. Finding an artist beginning with 'N' took close to 100 clicks with my full 120GB iPod classic. And if you want to go from Nelly to Nirvana, you have to start all over from 'A' again.
-Poor screen resolution. Font edges are jagged.
-No dimmer. It has a dimmer connection wire, but it did not work on my unit. The screen was at full brightness at all times, and the manual dimmer control did not work either. At night it was like having a spotlight in my dash.
-Restarts between sources. Every time you change sources, the entire unit restarts. Screen shuts off then on and everything. It doesn't take too long, 3-4 seconds maybe, but it is rather odd and obnoxious. I took the whole thing out to check for a loose connection when it first happened. Called Clarion about it and they said it is normal operation.
-Navigation. The specs list this unit as being compatible with an optional navigation unit. However, the only input for the navigation unit is a component video connection. So if you were to connect navigation, the VX409 would only serve as a monitor, and you would not have touch screen control of anything.
Overall, the actual physical unit could be quite nice. However the software feels like going back to using Windows 95.

I bought the Dual DVDN9131 at Wal-mart on 1-23-10. Today is 3-6-10 and I just shipped it back to Dual to be fixed or replaced. The unit worked fine when I first installed it, but now when I try to use the blue tooth to make phone calls people cannot understand what I am saying. My voice is Garbled like I am talking under water or something. I contacted Dual customer support and they told me to ship it back for repair or replace. I don't know what to expect from here, I have never owned any Dual products before. This radio seems to be a nice unit, I just hope they take care of the problem in a timley manner.

Marantz NA7004 Network Audio Player (Black) Review

Marantz NA7004 Network Audio Player (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Have had this for 3 days now and am very happy with it. The first thing I did after setting up was to download the firmware update. Sound quality is very good using the optical output - especially if you use lossless material like FLAC. Through the optical output I would say sound coloration character is "neutral". I have read reviews elsewhere that say sound quality was uneven while using the analog outs. My past experience with Marantz leads me to believe that break in of at least a hundred hours is necessary for those type of analog output stages to "flatten up. I tested the unit with 320 AAC files, 24 bit 96 khz FLAC, and WAV files and very good sound was obtained. Internet radio is the best sounding of any unit I have ever used. I am foremost a fan of vinyl but I can truly say this unit makes digital files "listenable". Much better sound then I expected . I hear no evidence of fatique at all.
I went ahead and purchased the 50 buck firmware upgrade to enable airplay functionality with Apple Ipod, Itunes, iPad products and tested it all tonight. Very satisfying. I connected an iPod to the unit and that also worked very well.In conclusion I feel the unit is worth the price and recommend it.
So what are the "cons'? One I can think of is that it is outrageous that Marantz does not provide the Airplay firmware upgrade free of charge to people buying the product today. The other things I dislike is that the unit will not decode 24 bit 192Khz FLAC files or Apple Lossless ones. You are however able to play Apple Lossless files stored in Itunes on your computer or iOS devices via Airplay and sound quality is excellent.
Is this unit for the rabid audiophile with a 100k system? Probably not. It produces great sound for a mid range system though and I feel a large portion of listeners will be very happy with it.

Jensen VM9224 Double DIN MultiMedia Receiver with 6.1-Inch Touch Screen Review

Jensen VM9224 Double DIN MultiMedia Receiver with 6.1-Inch Touch Screen
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My first review, I wanted to drop some info here since I looked all over the internet before purchasing this unit and could not find anything. Yes I bought blind...
Initially I was skeptical of buying something other than Pioneer, as that's what I've had since Clarion went downhill in the late 90's. So far I am very pleased with this unit.
Pros:
Unit looks good
Graphics are simplistic and attractive - no funky colors here, almost stock in appearance
Screen is sharp and clear 800x480 resolution
Sound quality is better than expected
Video bypass is super simple - ground pink wire - no nag screen
Includes everything you need to install and operate
Front and rear USB ports
Supports 16 gig SD card - haven't tried 32 gig yet
Played most of the random downloaded movies I put on the SD card
Menus are easy enough to navigate
Optional bluetooth works very well
Cons:
Sticks out a bit from dash - had to modify my factory brackets to flush mount
Remote is terribly laid out, and some features only accessible from remote - like aspect and zoom
Unit is a bit slow scanning large amounts of media
Takes about 30 seconds to power off completely
No automatic dimmer
Volume control on unit sometimes lags
GUI not customizable
Radio reception slightly worse than others
Only a 3 band EQ? Really?
Media stops playing when you go to settings or source menu
When Subwoofer out is activated, bass is not sent to the main speakers - turn off sub out and use the rear rca out for subs
Conclusion:
Does way more than the big name brands for less than half the price.
I can have a 16 gig SD card full of movies, a 16 gig usb flash drive full of music, AND an ipod hooked up simultaneously. Would I buy this unit again? Definitely.

JVC KW-NX7000 Double Din Navigation with 7" Wide Touch Panel Monitor w/ DVD/CD/USB/SD Media Card & 2.0 Direct Receiver Review

JVC KW-NX7000 Double Din Navigation with 7 Wide Touch Panel Monitor w/ DVD/CD/USB/SD Media Card and 2.0 Direct Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I recently installed a KW-NX7000 in my Honda Civic. Overall it is a pretty good system but it does not really break any new ground either. This is not my 1st GPS, I have installed a Kenwood DNX5120 in my other vehicle and a factory VW Navi in another. I also have various portables from Garmin, Magellan, TomTom, Dash, etc. I will primarlily make comparisons to the Kenwood, the VW system is not worth discussing!
Interface. One big plus I will give to the KW-NX7000 is the interface. It looks good, is intuitive, and is easy to use. Kenwood has good Navi menus (all Garmin) but the rest of the interface is a mess and often requires you to refer back to the manual. With the JVC the manual is really not needed, the whole system is very intuitive.
The navigation itself works very well. It locks signal quickly and presents routes that usually make sense. The database of POI's seems reasonably complete. You do have options for fastest time / shortest distance in both preferences and on a per trip basis.
I am not especially impressed with how the KW-NX7000 displays maps. They are easy to read but kind of dull, often times you are just seeing lines on a white background. Unfortunately, there is no option to show more or less detail. Thus, unless you are zoomed way in to about 600 feet, you do not even see road names, town names, etc., just lines. The 3D view was even more dissapointing as it shows even less detail unless you are in one of the few major metropolitan areas where 3d renditions are presented. I have yet to see it present anything nearly as interesting as the photo on the box! My 10 year old says that my other units maps look more "modern". Although I tend to think Garmins maps look a bit cartoonish, I still prefer them to the blandness of JVC's. I will give JVC the edge in how they present things like speed limits, lane guidance, and other details when you are doing a routed trip. If you are only displaying the map all you get is the map and the time.
The JVC has a feature that menus appear and buttons light up when you hand gets near the screen. This is a nice feature and sensitivity can be adjusted. You can change the screen colors but not the button light colors as you can on the Kenwood or Pioneer units. No big deal but if every other button on your car is red, these will be blue.
Boo-hiss to JVC for not including RDS on FM. This means that the unit does not display the song, artist, or station information. Kenwood does provide this feature. JVC has it for HD Radio only.
I installed the JVC bluetooth module and this works great with my blackberry. Given the price differential between the Kenwood and the JVC, I do think Bluetooth should be built in as it is on the Pioneers.
I have not yet installed the HD radio module as this requires an antenna splitter (KS-U21) to continue getting traffic. Unfortunately, part KS-U21 is virtually unobtainable at this time. I am also waiting on my ipod interface so will have to provide an update on that later.
Physically the unit looks good. As installed in the Civic it looks very close to a factory install. The removable, flip down, screen is a great feature unique to the JVC. The screen is nice and large, defintely bigger than the DNX 5120. However, keep in mind that in some vehicles, the screen will stick out a bit more form the dash than some other units and may thus look more "aftermarket" than some others. I was originally going to install this in a 2nd Gen MR2 and it just stuck out to far for my tastes. In the Honda it sits in a "pod" so this is not an issue.
Install was no harder or easier than any other 2-Din head unit. It does work with the PAC Steering Wheel interface controller.
I do feel that for the price of this unit it should include some additional "standard" features. If it included either Bluetooth or HD built-in, this could make it stand out from the pack and not require another box to hide under the dash. Heck, if they just included an iPod cable or an AV cable it would be nice. Do lifetime traffic instead of 3 months. Just provide something that makes this more than another "me too" GPS. This unit costs a good bit more than the DNX5120 but it does not feel like I got a lot more.
So, is this a good head unit? Absoultely. I think it does everything well. I guess the rub is that it does no one thing great, it just has not raised the bar in any features other than the removable faceplate. Some of this could be revised in software, but the same can be said for every other manufacturer.
If this unit were the same price as the DNX5120 I would call it a toss up. You would be trading some features for others so it is a matter of what is more important to you. Currently it is a fair bit more expensive. If I were to get another GPS today, and it were between these two, I would likely go with the Kenwood.

Samsung i5800 Galaxy 3 Unlocked Touchscreen Phone with Android OS, Wi-Fi, GPS, 3.1 MP Camera+Video--International Version with Warranty (Black)

Samsung still has not released the 2.2 Froyo update for the Galaxy 3 despite repeated promises to do so. This means you cannot install apps to the SD card and are limited to just the internal phone memory. There are many sites online that describe how to install the update yourself if you are willing to risk it but Samsung still has not released their official update. Sometimes there is a little difficulty connecting to WiFi, it simply will not get an IP address even if signal strength is excellent. It seems that the update to 2.2 also resolves that issue.
Summary: a good phone that could be great whenever the update gets released

VoSKY Touch Videophone for Skype (VOSKYMTV00-01) Review

VoSKY Touch Videophone for Skype (VOSKYMTV00-01)

VoSKY Touch Videophone for Skype (VOSKYMTV00-01)
This product has some serious problems:
- It is incompatible with various Skype clients, including the ASUS Videophone (which never had a problem with any client).
- During a video call, it doesn't show both sides: only one side or the other. And it takes a really long time to display the video when you toggle from viewing your video to viewing the other side.
- The touchscreen is terrible. It has a horrible lag that makes it very difficult to select what you want.
- It lacks a screen saver. The "VOSKY" screen is always on, illuminating everything, day or night, running with batteries or not.
- It suffers from "featuritis": it has a lot of very useless features like listening to internet radio or viewing movies. But it lacks important features as those mentioned above.
Bottom line: nice try but it needs a lot of polishing before it is a valid product.
This one is going back and I'm getting an ASUS: although the ASUS is not without its problems (it loses its wifi config all the time), they work and are compatible with everything out there (except the VoSky, of course).

Sony STR-DA2400ES 7.1 Channel Home Theater AV Receiver Review

Sony STR-DA2400ES 7.1 Channel Home Theater AV Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this component to take advantage of all the features of my Sony Bravia XBR KDL-52XBR6 TV and Sony BDP-S550 1080p Blu-ray Player. The integration into my system was as easy as possible with the HDMI cables. One HDMI from the Blu-ray player and one from the Comcast Hi-Def cable box into the A/V receiver. One more HDMI from the A/V receiver to the TV. Connect the 7.1 speakers and your done.
The sound field set up was brain-dead simple with the included microphone. The Theatre Sych feature worked perfectly the first time. Put a disk in the player and hit the play button, the TV turns on and selects the correct input and starts playing your movie. I added a Sony TDM-IP1 Digital Media Port iPod Dock for my iPod. Just plug it into the digital media port on the back of the A/V receiver and you're ready to listen to your favorite iTunes playlist. (Warning: the Sony TDM-IP1 Digital Media Port iPod Dock is not compatible with all iPods - check to make sure your iPod is compatible.)
The best part was, obviously, the sound. Without the 7.1 surround, you're missing half of the movie. Also, the music from the iPod takes on a whole new dimension with the A/V receiver's selectable sound fields (Concert Hall, Jazz Club, etc.). I'm sure there are audio purists who would look down their nose at it, but I don't have unlimited funds to put into my A/V system. The price, ease of connection, and feature integration make it perfect for my home theater needs. The upscaling feature of the A/V receiver compensates for the lack of a 1080p signal on regular (Non-HiDef) cable. Not as good as a true 1080p signal, but watchable.
Overall, I'm very pleased with Sony's latest implementation of Digital Home Theater/Entertainment. The picture and sound are state-of-the-art and I can still afford to pay my daughter's college tuition.

Boss Audio Systems BV9455 In-Dash Double-DIN DVD/MP3/CD AM/FM Receiver with 7 inch Widescreen Touchscreen TFT Monitor with USB Port and SD Memory Card Ports Review

Boss Audio Systems BV9455 In-Dash Double-DIN DVD/MP3/CD AM/FM Receiver with 7 inch Widescreen Touchscreen TFT Monitor with USB Port and SD Memory Card Ports

I have always liked Boss audio systems for one single thing: the sound, i have this guy working with a SoundStorm 1000Wx4Ch Amp, a Pioneer 800W Sub and two Blaupunkt 500W speakers and so far this is the one that has given me the best sound (before i had a Pioneer and a Sony Xplod).
The DBAS mode is awesome, i don't know how they did that, but after enabling the DBAS mode you won't be able to live without it.
OK, there is something Boss players have always sucked at: User Interface, the UI of this guy isn't a exception, it's tricky, hard to understand and awfully minimalistic. If the people of Boss would take some more care in designing better UIs for their systems they would definitely rock...
Pros: very good sound, nice antishock system, supports lots of media formats (mp3,wma,cda,dvd,vcd,avi,mpg,divx), screen is bright and very durable, swiveling screen can be adjusted to several angles, reverse camera mode...
Cons: Crappy UI and some minor glitches, remote control is confusing, some settings can only be accesed from remote, has trouble with some old MP3s (very rare, but happens).
In general i think this is a very nice system for such a price, if you want some fancy UI then buy Pioneer or Sony, but be prepared to pay for it.
NOTE: The description clearly states that this is a DOUBLE DIN sized device, so it needs about double the space of a common car radio, the screen is always visible, isn't one of these arrangements that get the screen hidden magically when you turn off the thing... warned you are, don't come crying when you discover that it can't be fitted into your SINGLE DIN dashboard.
