(More customer reviews)This device will use an ad hoc transmission to an FTP configured laptop (ie with built in wireless), but at the slower 801.11b mode - generally plenty fast enough >1mbyte/sec, so a high res raw file will be transferred in 10 seconds.
This has a great range - can cover a football field with extnded range antenna - blue tooth is unreliable across a dance floor.
If you are pro and need fast upload to acomputer for client reasons, go for it.
Pricey, but then they don't sell 1,000,000 of 'em to recoup the development cost.
One safe guard is it won't work if you are out of memory - you always have a backup of what you sent - on the card! Of course you can delete it then after your partner calls you on your blue tooth ear bud to let you know it was received and being printed for sale as you shoot your next shot!

(More customer reviews)If you have ever watched David Ziser photograph you will see how I work, except I have a TRIO on-camera and he has a 580EXII on-camera. I use it inside with an assistant holding a monipod, T5dR attached using a multi-clamp and a Turbo 2x2 battery powering the unit. The T5dR will have an umbrella out front when inside and outside it will be closed. The T5dR provides a lot of light. This comes in handy when shooting groups or individuals in full sunlight or very bright sunlight. Plenty of power for my work.I can adjust it from my TRIO, turn it on, off, on, up or down, change the power, etc. wirelessly using the optional FW7Q receiver. If my 580EXII is on board my camera, as seen with Ziser, my assistant can easily adjust power for me on the T5dR. The thing that would complete the package and give it a five-star rating would be if the T5dR would do HSS (high speed sync.
It is an expensive unit, made in the USA. It is a workhorse, and superior in light quality to the 580EXII remote flash. There are several diffusers and tinted stuff for it, which I don't use. It is fairly large, about twice the 580 flash, larger head (good thing)but probably weighs about the same as a 580 with batteries.
It is a great tool that I love because it provides great light and sets me apart from the on-camera flash photographers. It provides my client a more professional, higher quality look.

(More customer reviews)I can't complain one bit about the strobes in this kit. The umbrellas were good too, would have liked a few more inches on radius but this will do fine. The soft boxes looked like trash or cheap until you put them together then they are totally functional and stout. I will leave mine put together all the time but it would be nice to have an easier way to fold them down for transport. The stands were of good quality and works just fine. The battery in the remote trigger (on the camera side) was dead on arrival but I did a search and found a package of five batteries for around $5 so I'm sure it will work fine then. The remote receiver uses two AAA batteries as well. The strobes will all work as slaves to a speedlight if you use manual mode which does not put out the pre-flash for such as red eye reduction, etc. Otherwise the strobes will sync with the pre-flash and not the flash itself and the shutter will snap after the strobes flash. Not a big deal as it's a flash problem not a strobe issue. The cases are nice as well. I do wish that the strobe caps were deep enough to keep the modeling lights in the strobe unit instead of having to take them out each time for transport and before you are able to put the cap on. The barn doors and snoots, filters, etc do a pretty good job as well. Medium quality for what it is.
I would highly recommend this kit to any starting photographer and/or semi-pro wanting a good strobe kit without spending thousands of dollars. A power strip included in this kit with a 12 foot extension would only enhance this kit.

My Background: I am an accomplished amateur, with quite a bit of experience. I got my first "real" camera as a teenager in the 1960's. My last one before my current camera was an Olympus OM-2n. I have won awards in both the photo contests I have entered. I enjoy the technical aspects of photography. I didn't just read the manuals that came with my camera and flash, I studied them. My camera: My newest camera is an Olympus e-520, which has all the communication capability necessary to use the FL-50R's features. Some features may not be available with your camera, so you should check your camera's manual and the flash unit's manual to be sure. [Aside: I was unable to find a download for the FL-50R manual anywhere, so I e-mailed Olympus support. They sent me a link that worked for me, but is no longer valid. I suspect that if you e-mail them, you can get the manual in PDF format, as I did.] [Edit-24 December 2009: In his comments on this review, Neal E. Tornberg gives the following link to a PDF file of the manual for this flash. Thanks, Neal. [...]
Pros:
*Absolutely the best feature of this flash (for me) is its power. At ISO 400, with the lens at f4, the auto flash will shoot out to 25 meters. That's 82 feet! Switch to ISO 800 or f2.8 and you can shoot a subject over 100 feet away. The GN (Guide Number) for this flash is 50 (in meters). If you do your calculations in feet, the GN is 164!
*The flash zooms in and out automatically with the camera lens, up to a point. It has an equivalent focal length range of 12-42 mm (24-84 equivalent in 35 mm). This is exactly the range of the standard lens on my camera. There is a wide angle diffuser panel built in so you can use wider lenses if desired. You may zoom the flash manually in some modes.
*My camera uses its built-in flash to illuminate dark areas when auto-focusing. With the FL-50R mounted, it uses the auto-focus emitter on the FL-50R. This is a separate, relatively low-intensity, red emitter. It is much, much faster and much, much less annoying to people than the camera's built-in flash.
*If the flash is mounted on the camera, when you turn the camera off, the flash also turns off. (Actually it goes into SLEEP mode, but the result is the same.) When you turn the camera back on, the flash comes on as well. This will save your flash batteries.
*While you can use the Olympus lithium battery ($10), this flash works extremely well with NiMH rechargeable batteries. The manual says NiMH batteries will take about 200 photos. I took about 250 flash photos of various power levels before recharging my 2700 mAh, NiMH batteries, but the LOW BATTERY indicator had not come on yet. With NiMH, the flash charging time (time from turn on until you get a CHARGE light) was 4.8 seconds with fresh batteries. This increased to 6.8 seconds after about 60 flash photos at various flash intensities. Even after 250 flashes, the charging time never got ridiculously long.
*There is an FP AUTO mode that allows you to use the flash even at high shutter speeds. This allows use of fill-in flash for backlit subjects on bright day.
*The flash has a LIGHT button that illuminates the flash's control display. How nice that someone thought that you might be using a flash because the light was dim. The display will also illuminate on a signal from the camera. Cons:
*The manual warns not to use this flash on non-Olympus cameras. (Page 49)
*This unit is big. I don't find it uncomfortably large, but that's mostly because I am willing to deal with the extra weight and volume in order to get the features this flash supplies. When it's mounted on my camera and it's hanging from the neck strap, the camera flops down and is difficult to carry easily.
*There is a limit to the number of flash emissions you are allowed in a given time. This is difficult to use in real life. The limit is 10 full-power flashes in 10 minutes, or 20 half-power flashes in 10 minutes, etc. Since you don't know the power of any given flash emission in any of the AUTO modes, you must estimate the usage and curtail flash photography as required. The reason is that the light unit gets hot, as do the batteries.
*The attachment for the reflector adaptor is seriously hokey. Basically, Olympus uses the equivalent of a rubber band to strap the adaptor to the flash. About the only good thing you can say about this is that the reflector adaptor doesn't seem to be very useful, so you'll probably leave it in a drawer anyway. There is no place to stow it on the FL-50R. Additional Notes:
*The RC (Remote Control?) mode allows you to mount the FL-50R on a small stand (included), or a light stand, or a tripod. The flash can be controlled by a compatible camera. The drawback to this is that the FL-50R must be able to "see" the camera's flash (which is used to control the remote FL-50R). That is, there must be a line-of-sight between them. While this feature is nice, the line-of-sight requirement can be a serious limitation, especially if you want to use the FL-50R to illuminate the background for a portrait. As an alternative, the flash can be used in SLAVE mode, and it will fire when it senses a flash from another source.
*If the flash is mounted on the e-520 camera and turned on, you cannot use the camera's built-in flash. If the FL-50R is turned off, the camera's flash will try to pop up, but it will be prevented by the FL-50R from extending all the way. You must remove the FL-50R in order to stow the camera's flash. This is not true for all camera models, and you may use the camera's flash in addition to the FL-50R with other cameras.
*Like most modern flash units, this one will vary the intensity to fit the situation. You can always use MANUAL mode to override this. After taking a photo in one of the reduced power modes, the AUTO CHECK light will flash if the flash had enough power. If the light doesn't flash, your picture is likely underexposed.

I was however prepared to pay for such a well engineered, perfectly constructed camera case for my $200 camera. I liked the case--the flower plaid print is nice, and it's compact enough to fit in your pocket. I gave this product two stars due to shipping costs. I think $6.99 is quite steep to ship me my camera case. I realize the costs of shipping have risen, but 7 bucks is highway robbery. All in all a great buy, but I would recommend buying local to save yourself the grief of shipping charges.

Light stands are too light for "this kit" will need some weight to remain steady. can easily fall, if fully extended
Also,two out the three stands were stuck upon delivery and unable to open/expand unless forced with the use of pliers etc...which happens repeatedly when collapsed. I had to use a piece of masking tape to stop it from collapsing totally.
Lights are a little slow to recycle but you get used to it with the help of the buzzer... and works well with the triggers and with the various control options.
Umbrellas are cute almost a joke, VERY inferior... invest in an upgrade IMMEDIATELY,if going to be used repeatedly.

Pro 3-Light 480 W/S Strobe Flash Studio Kit Review

The lights are great, the slave works wonderfully (after I figured out how to make it work, hee) and the photos came out very well lit and just gorgeous. I am very happy with the kit. I'm sure when I can afford something nicer I will upgrade, but for the time being this kit fulfills all of my needs and it's great. I also love that it's super easy to put together and take apart, and the storage case it comes with is compact and easy to carry. I love the kit and hope it lasts for a long time!

It is sad to see such unscrupulous dealers hawking their wares on a respectable site like Amazon! For a $30 premium you get the privilege of paying $13.95 for shipping!

Sekonic L-758DR Light Meter (Black) Review

(More customer reviews)I really like this meter. It does everything I need and a bit more. I find it easy to use as it follows similar interface design as my DSLR's "press-this-and-spin-that" UI. The integrated pocket wizard, ability to meter light ratios and balance ambient light is fantastic. The use of this meter has improved my shots.
A previous reviewer said the interface was poor - I disagree. The interface is extremely simple for the basic functions you'll use all the time. Set the ISO, take a reading, change between reflected spot and incident, set the pocket wizard channel, set the exposure time for ambient, etc.
When using the more advanced features, it gets a little more complicated. For example, metering the highlights, the shadows and mid-tones and display them all at once, or meter the lighting ratio between lights. Perhaps it could be a little easier but I don't find it a hinderance.
In fact I didn't notice the complexity as it's no more complicated than most of the features on my Nikon D700. The Sekonic, happily, follows the same convention of rapid key combinations for instant access to features instead of slow menu driven interfaces. Yes the menus are easier to learn - but you'd pay that speed penalty every time you'd use it. Once you learn how to play the Sekonic's keys, the price is paid and you get the speed benefit every time you use it.
Now it would be slick if, like the pro DSLRs, they provided both a menu and a key. But I still wouldn't use the menu.

Pocket Wizard Mini TT1 & Flex TT5 for Nikon DSLR Bundle (1 Mini and 2 Flex) Review

I've been using this miniTT1 and FlexTT5s with my D90 and D200 for several months now. To say that they are perfect would be an overstatement. To say they work every bit as well as if they were hard-cabled is pretty much dead on. And with these things you don't have the challenges of tripping over or getting twisted in long wire runs.
As a simple example, I can set my flash (Nikon SB-800 AF Speedlight for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras - Old Version) with a Gary Fong Lightsphere Universal System Cloud attached on a stand in the middle of a large room. I have my camera (Nikon D200 10.2MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only)) set to manual exposure, 1/30 @ f5.6. Pictures I take anywhere in the room are perfectly exposed.
They also work perfectly, albeit without the TTL functions, with the original PocketWizard Plus II Transceiver 801-125 Relay Radio Slave Transmitter Receiver 2-piece w/ PockeWizard Case for 2 in the mix.
There were some issues with the Canon version of these controllers and that was attributed to both the Mini/Flex and Canon "natively" using radio signals to control things. Nikon took a different approach, using light instead of RF signals for their Creative Lighting System (CLS) commands As a result there is no interference with the latest equipment from PocketWizard.
There are a flood of flash controllers available these days. Some cost a fraction of what these do and if you are only needing them to go short distances and can tolerate the occasional failure they're OK. PocketWizard, with the miniTT1 and FlexTT5, along with their continued support for the other equipment in their product line, caters to a more demanding user with far greater performance and reliability requirements. For me, anyway, it didn't make sense to take a chance on reliability or performance, or give up the capabilities provided here, just to save some on a one-time expense.
BTW, I feel that honest, effective reviews can take the place of first-hand experiences that are lacking in online shopping. I've always appreciated the help I've received from other reviewers and work hard to return the favor as best as I can. I hope you found this review helpful and if there was anything you thought was lacking or unclear leave a comment and I'll do what I can to fix it.

(More customer reviews)This unit is touted as a direct factory replacement but it won't fit the dash of US Spec models, at least 2002's like mine.
not even close.
(My 2002's dash has the climate controls above the touchscreen, screen control buttons to the left of the screen, and
a cassette player with the radio volume, on off and tuning dials down below the factory touchscreen, and has the JBL stereo).
Moreover there are absolutely no installation instructions just an operators manual.
I called Pyle but their support was useless to try and clarify the fitment or why they were advertising it as fitting Land Cruisers.
Perhaps it is designed for markets other than US. Perhaps it might fit base models, but i believe most if not all Land Cruisers in the US in those years
had the upgraded stereo/nav, so if it doesnt fit Land Cruisers with the more deluxe factory system they should note that in their sales information.
Anyway no one at Pyle had sufficient familiarity with the product to explain these issues.
i didnt get far enough in to see if wiring matched up so can't address those aspects of the installatiom.
Anyway too bad the unit is a great idea appears to be well made and has great features.

(More customer reviews)I wasn't sure what to think of this when I first saw it but felt that it was worth a shot. I was tired of sacrificing my more expensive equipment when on location and wanted something that would allow me to have what I needed when I needed it. For the money (keep that in mind!!) this is a great system. I'm more than an amateur, but a little less than a pro, but have managed to make several of my clients very, very happy while using this setup. Oh, the softboxes are a pain in the neck to set up and the stands are a little wobbly but all in all, I found this to be a terrific deal. I still need one more light and would just as soon not have the gels since I never use them, but everything else works find. The reflectors are a good size, the backdrops will do in a pinch (my old stuff is far better so I haven't given them much of a test).
If you are looking for an inexpensive (all things being relative, of course) break into the world of studio photography, I think you would be hard pressed to find a better bang for your buck. Will this set last you forever? No. But it will help you hone your skills so that as you start to make the big bucks you can start upgrading without doubting your abilities.

Easy to download the pics, very nice quality screen, long lasting battery (unless you play videos). I use my video ipod to play most music and videos, and save the space on the Wolverine for my photographs. High quality, great photo storage and viewing. I am buying the 250 gig unit because with 15mb raw files, the 100 gig unit has come dangerously close to full at the end of a 3 week trip to Japan.

You can then view JPEG, Bitmap, Tiff, Text, and RAW images right on the ESP and even print directly to a printer. And because the Wolverine ESP is battery operated and highly portable, you can literally save your data anywhere in the world. The ESP also is able to record video directly from TV, a DVD player, a VCR player, camcorders, or any other video source (requires optional cradle).

(More customer reviews)I have to admit, the Elinchrom EL-Skyport competitor units have more advantageous specifications on paper compared to these PocketWizard Plus II units. There are a few other wireless units out there, but only two of these brands can compete if you want serious no-fail gear. Heres the comparison:

The PocketWizards are even bulkier than the Skyports which are flat. The antenna of the PocketWizard looks fragile and doesn't hide or swivel down when being kept. In fact the plastic build and feel of the PocketWizard feels like a cheap radio control toy for kids.
And to add more to the above, it's almost twice as expensive than the Skyport.
So why did I still get the PocketWizard unit? The PocketWizard MultiMax transceiver is more versatile and more advanced in features than the above two models which is what I am aiming to grab to control the other PocketWizard units. I'm investing and banking on the fact that PocketWizard will try to strike a deal with other manufacturers for wireless flash trigger.
They started with Mamiya Corporation and equipped their Sekonic's current light meters with the technology including my Sekonic L-758Cine flash meter that I've installed a PocketWizard wireless module.
And unlike the Elinchrom EL-Skyport RX model (which is a custom tailored version that plugs into their own RX lighting setup), The PocketWizard technology exists in various lighting brands including Dyna-Lite, Norman, Profoto and Photogenic.
Nikon did once use PocketWizard in their D1X way back in 2002 until they started their own Creative Lighting System (CLS) which does not simply rely on triggering a flash alone, but measures, meters and communicates the information back to the camera. It would be best to know each capability and limitation especially depending on the scale of your project, intent and creativity.
The PocketWizard has been around for a longer time and they have rock-solid reliability. It sticks out from the camera hot shoe like a sore thumb and for a good reason that enables great communication with other units over a long distance.
Conclusion:
You obviously have to evaluate your needs and how you plan to build your system.
If you are on a budget and would like equal reliability over shorter and more normal triggering distances, I would suggest Elinchrom EL-Skyport. In fact I would suggest investing on RX models and be able to control Elinchrom's own lights via their downloadable EL-Skyport software.
However, if you want to stick with the proven technology and reliability of PocketWizard then building a system around this wireless set up will be an equally good investment down the line especially as they try to expand with other professional brands of photographic devices.
The advantages of Elinchrom shine when you are building a system around their own brand. Outside of this, PocketWizard has been the recognized leader...at least for now.
