Jensen NVX-1000 4-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

Jensen NVX-1000 4-Inch Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Pros: large hard drive, lots of POI's, colorful accurate maps.
Cons: slow performance, poor FM transmitter quality, poor PC integration, poor route navigator calculator, infrequent lockups, MP3 playback kills performance even further.
Summary: I previously had a Tomtom GO 300 which got stolen from my vehicle, so I replaced it with the Jensen because it was on sale. There are some advantages that the Jensen has over the Tomtom, such as its maps tend to be much more accurate and uptodate, with much more POI's. The Jensen comes with a huge 12GB hard drive rather than on a flash-based storage, though you can add SD flash to it through a slot; but this seems to be redundant, as the hard drive is more than big enough.
The unit uses Windows CE 5.0 as its operating system, which might explain it poor performance. But despite this, there doesn't seem to be a way to upgrade the OS, and surprisingly there isn't very much PC integration available. With Tomtom, they gave you a CD with a PC app that was used to update and upgrade its GPS units. Nothing of the sort exists for Jensen, the CD comes with only documentation. Plugging the Jensen into a PC USB port just makes its internal hard drive show up, which you can then use to copy files from your PC hard drives to the Jensen hard drive. But there's no integration between them otherwise.
The unit frequently comes up with poor choices of routes, despite having good quality accurate maps available. For example, even if you have set it up to use the fastest route, it usually ends up picking the shortest route instead, which isn't necessarily the fastest route. Also it picks up the satellites extremely slowly, it will sometimes not pick them up even after 10 minutes! And even when it has picked up the satellites, it's navigation speed is poor, it doesn't seem to keep up with the actual position of the vehicle very well.
Don't bother using its built-in FM transmitter to tune your radio to it. The quality of the sound is terrible, lots of interference noise comes through all of the time. And don't bother using its MP3 playback either. Not only would you need to listen to the music through this crappy FM transmitter, playing MP3's also kills its performance while navigating. It really can't multitask very well.
The unit seems to be packed with a lot of interesting features, at least on paper. But it hasn't been implemented well. A jack of all trades, a master of none.

URC Complete Control TX-1000 Medius - Universal remote control - infrared/radio Review

URC Complete Control TX-1000 Medius - Universal remote control - infrared/radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I recently purchased the Universal Remote TX-1000 to replace my broken Sony RM-AV3100. I had two of the Sony remotes and started devloping similar problems of them getting stuck on a command and not stopping as if the button was held down. So I swore to not buy another sony remote again since they seem to fall apart after about 3-4 years. When I was researching remotes a lot had changed, now the remotes are being programmed via computer. I had narrowed it down to the Logitech Harmony 890, Universal MX-950, or the Universal TX-1000. I enjoyed using the Sony remote and wanted something similar so I opted for the TX-1000. Based on conversation with retailers and reading threads on the internet it seemed that the Logitech tended to be a hit or miss and would eventually fall apart and that the Universal Remotes were "professional" quality remotes.
Pros and Cons:
- You have a lot of flexibilit with this remote. You can set the delay down to each button and choose the desired interval.
- When the software is updated, this remote can pretty much pickup any gear that you own and has the ability to learn the remote (as long as you have the original) in case it doesn't have it within the software. My Sony remote couldn't even support all of the buttons on my Sony TV! The other amazing thing is that the satellite box that I have does not have a shut off button. You have to go through menus to turn it off which is difficult to do using macros. This remote was able to provide a single button to turn off the box. The remote that the box came with didn't even have this button.
- It is fairly big and hefty
- Uses AA batteries which is a pro for me since I don't want to worry about some proprietary lithium ion battery needing to be replaced over time. I purchased rechargeable AA batteries instead.
- My Sony remote had the ability to have single buttons to be able to do two different functions. Example, when the SAT button was pressed slightly the remote would show the buttons on the screen for the Satellite. But if you held the button down for about two seconds the remote was able to perform a macro function. This is a very useful function that I will miss, which is the only real con against this remote.
- You can label the buttons however way you prefer (limited to 6 characters).
- I wish there was an off button for the screen to minimize battery drain. The screen stays on but not the light.
- I wish it had a sensor like the MX-950 where it senses your hand and the backlight would turn on or have glow in the dark buttons to be able to find the remote (it would make sense if the light button was glow in the dark).
- I wish it had the ability to control wall light switches using RF like the Harmony 890 or other high end remotes.
- This was the first time I had ever used software to program a remote so I can't compare this to the Logitech or other ones. If you are not computer savy or do not really understand how a high end remote works maybe you should buy the Logitech since I hear that their software is more user friendly. I had absolutely no problems understanding the software. A manual is provided with the remote but it's a joke. The software has help menus so if you're stuck it might help. Fortunately I never needed to use it. I can see how the software might be difficult but I think it's laid out pretty well. There is a learning curver and it took trial and error before I figured it out. If you have a notebook computer use it, you'll save trips going back and forth. The only problem with the software is that it takes a long time to set the remote up since it has so much flexibility. And if you are detail oriented such as myself it will take you even longer.
- Universal's customer support is a joke. You have to deal through one of their retailers. It seems like they don't really have tech support which I was concerned with since I wasn't sure if I would have questions.
- It was no problem for my wife to understand how the remote works.
- It has the most important buttons as hard buttons instead of entirely being touchscreen which is a plus.
Conclusions:
I think I made a good decision with this remote and plan on replacing my downstairs remote with another TX-1000. I'm sure that there are better remotes than this one and would have to wait 4 years to tell you if it is built better than my old Sony. But the remote is capable of doing everything that I need it to do and truly replaces all my other remotes to make life easy.

Boston Acoustics Horizon Trio Clock Radio w/ CD Player (Mist) Review

Boston Acoustics Horizon Trio Clock Radio w/ CD Player (Mist)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I already own one Boston Acoustics Clock Radio and decided to purchase another which plays CDs.
Unfortunately, there is a manufacturing glitch by which the audio mutes briefly at the end of each track when playing a CD straight through. This might not be noticeable on CDs where there is some silence between tracks. But on many classical CDs where there is continuity of music between tracks, this results in missing about a second of music at each track change.
This was confirmed by BA (because it always "searches" for the next track) and I found it unacceptable. So I had to return it.
However, if you are not into classical CDs, then this is otherwise an excellent CD/AM/FM clock radio. The sound quality is superb as one would expect from such an expensive item. I did find the snooze bar for the alarm a bit too sensitive, which on two occasions caused it to snooze for 15 minutes instead of 10.

SoundWorks Radio 705- Silver White - Open Box Review

SoundWorks Radio 705- Silver White - Open Box
Average Reviews:

An extraordinarily fine product. The best products shouldn't need to rely on bells & whistles, but should just get it right. This radio delivers - sounds like a million bucks (and can go surprisingly loud), the geared dial feels like a million bucks and allows very fine tuning of tough-to-isolate stations, and it's a sturdy thing.
I wish there were a lot more options in this class - only other real competition I'm aware of is the Tivoli Model One.

Logitech Harmony 1100 Universal Remote with Color Touch Screen Review

Logitech Harmony 1100 Universal Remote with Color Touch Screen
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Since I have no previous experience with the Harmony 1000 from Logitech, I won't be able to make any comparisons for those that are considering an upgrade.
Price: Prepare yourself for some sticker shock. At nearly $500, this remote carries a hefty price tag, and it's a bit hard to justify that much money for such a small device. On the other hand, this device may be the only one that you'll ever need while using your home electronics, and if you're unhappy with a bunch of remotes (or just want the cool factor), then maybe it's worth it.
Look and Feel: It's very light in terms of weight and easy to hold. In general, it has a very slim form factor and is not bulky by any means. On the downside, the finish is easily susceptible to fingerprints, as well as the actual touch screen, so you'll find yourself cleaning it every now and then.
Setup: The setup is pretty straightforward and you don't have to be a genius to get it going. It's as easy as installing the software, connecting the remote via the supplied USB cable to your PC, and then walking through a wizard which configures the remote. The remote revolves around "Activities" which might be things like "Watch TV" or "Watch a DVD" or "Play a Video Game". All of these are designed such that your various devices are all turned on and configured with a single button push. How well this actually works will depend on the device that you're using. I have a Samsung LCD TV, a Sony DA5000ES receiver, a Motorola cable box (with DVR), a Panasonic DVD/VCR combo, and an Xbox 360. Getting everything working with the exception of the receiver was a snap. Unfortunately, my receiver has a weird way of switching the inputs, and the Harmony wanted me to "teach" it how to change the inputs. While I worked through this for a while, I eventually gave up only because I was short on time. Aside from that, I think I lost one of the remotes to my Sony, and that made the teaching process that much harder.
Daily use: While I have not been using it for very long, I'm pretty pleased so far. My wife who is not technical savvy by any stretch loves it and has already started getting used to it and is anxious to get rid of our other remote controls. One minor annoyance is the need to "page" through a number of screens for some of the devices to get to their device-specific controls. For example, if you want to get to your DVR on your cable box, I have to hit the "page down" button five times, but once I'm there, I have full control using the tactile buttons on the right side of the remote. Perhaps there is a way to create a shortcut for this, although I haven't found it yet.
Customization: The included software allows a great deal of customization, so if you're into spending a bunch of time on the computer using their software, you'll love this remote. If you don't want to spend a bunch of time, the setup wizard should get you through the initial process in about 10 - 15 minutes and for the most part, further customization is not necessary, although it depends on your device.
Device Coverage: It's hard to say how much is covered, but the list that comes in from the software is pretty extensive, although it does not drill down to the specific model numbers, so it's hard to tell. In general, I think they have good coverage, especially from their existing remotes, and they're probably performing updates on their web site all the time. Worst case scenario - you can use your old remote to teach the Harmony the commands, but this isn't much fun.
Overall: If you want complete control over your entertainment system and are willing to pay for it, this remote is for you. If you're tired of having a number of remotes and want to consolidate with ease, this remote is for you.

Coby CX-CD282 Portable CD/Radio/Cassette Player Review

Coby CX-CD282 Portable CD/Radio/Cassette Player
Average Reviews:

Unit boasts large speakers. The sound is above average, although there isn't much bass. A traditional analog (nondigital) tuner makes it easier to change stations or to scan stations quickly. One drawback is that the unit does not play MP3 files burned to a CD. Contains a built-in microphone for tape, which is a virtual rarity these days. The draw of the unit is it's crystal clear sound, although I would prefer just a bit more bass.

After buying a hand held radio and being very dissapointed with the range and features I asked a friend with Coast Guard Auxillary for help. He advised me of features he looked for in a radio. This one met all criteria. After getting it installed and only using a 3 ft antenna, I could not be happier. Hope I never need it in an emergency but if I do, I know I have a quality radio that will do what needs to be done. Really nice feature is the weather updates.

Venturer KLV3915 15.4-Inch Undercabinet Kitchen LCD TV/DVD Combo Review

Venturer KLV3915 15.4-Inch Undercabinet Kitchen LCD TV/DVD Combo
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I did my homework on these units. There are not many of these under counter all in one tvs left. So my score is in comparison to what is out there.
Pros
*Big screen - this is a nice feature as most units have much smaller screens
*Plays DVDs - I have no problems with this feature
*Has good reception - All my channels come in fairly good (Cable TV/FM/AM)
*Cheapest of all units with this screen size.
*Magnetic remote for the fridge. I have heard people complain about this feature because it is not strong enough to hold the remote up. I am guessing that is because they have a stainless steel fridge which has less magnetic for the most part in comparison to a standard metal finish.
Cons
*Picture quality is not so great. I think this is because of the slow response time of the screen. I also noticed that the picture was much better when a HD signal was present.
*Selecting presets is difficult. This is by far the biggest issue for me. It is not easy to select your favorite channels. I have also noticed that selecting presets is done differently between the tv and the radio.
*When the timer is on I have not figured out a way to see it count down. So until it goes off you have no idea how much time is left.
*Remote does not make it across the room. I tested it and it goes about 10 feet. In reality how much farther will you view a 15 inch screen from?
*You really need the remote to use this unit. I am sure there is a way to use the buttons on the unit but the remote is much easier. I Wish they would have done preselects on the unit.
Summary
Not a bad unit, but if picture is important to you then this is not the unit for you. I am not sure the other units are any better in fact most of these units look to come from the same design. I assume they have updated the screen for vendors like RCA but not sure.IF you are looking for a simple inexpensive unit that has a big screen then it is not a bad option. I have had the unit for 2 months and no problems yet. We watch the news every day while making dinner.

Onkyo T-4555 Multi Platform Tuner (Black) Review

Onkyo T-4555 Multi Platform Tuner (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have never written a review on Amazon but I felt this needed to be delt with. I had trouble with this tuner receiving both XM radio and HD radio.
I actually returned one unit in exchange for another and the problem continued. After listening to XM radio the tuner was unable to decode the HD signal. My phone calls to both XM radio and Onkyo were unrevealing and terribly unhelpful. Both companies hit a new low in providing useless information. After experimenting I found that my roof antenna was putting out TOO STRONG a signal and probably over loading the tuning circuits. I added a 3dB attenuator and the problem was solved.
The unit has excellent sound and makes the best of the compressed formats
on XM and HD radio. But beware, you antenna may actually be too good.
Another quirk is that you have to press a button to find out what is being played rather than the information appearing automatically.

Revo Pico Portable WiFi Internet Radio Review

Revo Pico Portable WiFi Internet Radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been waiting for this type product for a long time and I am glad I bought it. However, I would not recommend it for everyone just yet. It has a coolness factor which I paid a premium. I refuse to pay for XM because there is too much free music out there. It works seamlessly with the Reciva website but expect some of the stations to not work properly. That's fine because there is so much to choose from. The sound quality is only ok but most stations are sub cd quality anyway. Battery life is maybe 3 hours depending on the loudness. WiFi distance is not very good. FM is not great either. Navigating the menus is far from intuitive. You really need to be tech savvy to understand this radio. The podcasts I listen to cut off about halfway. The remote sucks. Despite the cons, I think future firmware updates will continue to improve the technology. Unless you have some disposable income or have to have the latest, greatest, you might want to wait until revision 2.
*** UPDATE ***
I need to add a star to my review. The beta firmware (as of Jan 09) has cured my some of my gripes. It now scrolls metadata for some stations and plays podcasts properly. It will play Clear Channel stations also. Reciva has made the menus easier to navigate. You still need to be a techie to enjoy this radio.

Crosley Radio CR2413A-BK Memory Master II CD Recorder/USB (Black) Review

Crosley Radio CR2413A-BK Memory Master II CD Recorder/USB (Black)
Average Reviews:

At first, I though this product was what I wanted. But then I realized that the speakers are terrible and the outputs on the back aren't common for speaker outputs. THEN the turntable started sounding weird, the cd drive wouldn't open, and finally the system wouldn't turn on to function at all. So its been a complete waste of money. The return window is way too short and Crosley is not the easiest to deal with - their warranty covers a year and you have to pay for all the shipping to send it to them for repairs.

GenevaSound All-in-One Stereo for CD, Radio, iPod, iPhone, Line-in (Medium-White) Review

GenevaSound All-in-One Stereo for CD, Radio, iPod, iPhone, Line-in (Medium-White)
Average Reviews:

The Geneva M puts out an incredible sound for such a small little box and while it has no handles, it is easy to transfer between rooms to enjoy my fantastic music anywhere.
The Geneva sound is excellent from top to bottom, and bass production lives up to the quality of the music played. The level of power is stronger with CD's than my i-Pod, but this is true with my primary large stereo system as well.
The beauty of the stereo is in its fine simplicity and fine craftsmanship. It enhances my room but does not define it.
I also love the remote control. It is simple, easy to see and accomplishes what it is intended to accomplish. I do not feel that I need to wear my glasses and get out a driver's manual.
Overall, the performance of the Geneva M is spectacular.

Sherwood R-904N 700 Watt 7.1-Channel Dual-Zone receiver (Black) Review

Sherwood R-904N 700 Watt 7.1-Channel Dual-Zone receiver (Black)

UPDATE: 7 Oct 2010 - If you use both the HDMI and COMPONENT output of the Sherwood to those inputs to your HDTV set, you can switch between those formats although you are using the same designation on the Sherwood. In other words, if you choose Video 1 on the Sherwood and an HDMI cable signal connected to Video 1 but you also have a COMPONENT device going connected to Video 1, then you can switch between the HDMI and COMPONENT inputs on your HDTV set and see either inputs. However, you do have to use your remote to change the audio assign for the Video 1 choice. For example, I use the HDMI cable to carry the audio from my cable box so the AUDIO ASSIGN when I'm using that is H. But when I am using Video one for my COMPONENT input, I may have to change the AUDIO ASSIGN for that signal to analog, optical or coax - all of which are options for AUDIO ASSIGN.
UPDATE: 1 Oct 2010 - The VuNow feature on the unit suddenly stopped working one day. However, I still use it as my media center for feeding my HDTV cable, DVD, Wii and S-VHS player to my HDTV set. I love the surround sound and the rest of it. Please look below for the replacement product I got for the VuNow feature - Westerm Digital - Western Digital WD TV Live Network-ready HD Media Player WDBAAN0000NBK-NESNWD-TV Live HD Media Player This product (Sherwood R904-N) works perfectly in my small New York apartment when matched with the compact set of ORB surround speakers. It's one of very few AV/Rs low in height but packed with the latest features like connection to the web and automatic room equalization of the speakers. The three HDMI inputs from cable, DVD and my FLIP HD camera flow through beautifully to my HDTV. . The web service input gives you direct access to on-line YouTube videos, web video sites all over the world, web radio as well the front USB port from which I play downloaded movies (with their surround sound),mp3 files and any of my own home-made videos and pictures I've saved to a USB memory device - all displayed on the HDTV and surround speakers. I had a nearby desktop PC with an optical audio output that I connected to the Sherwood playing some of the newer web radio sites that now stream in 5.1 Surround - cool! And speaking of sound, there are enough options for Dolby, speaker adjustment, etc. for the audiophile to play with. However, since I believe critique of sound quality varies with the individual, I will only say it sounds great to me.
Needless to say - I love this unit.
