Onkyo TX-NR5007 145 Watts 9.2-Channel AV Surround Home Network Receiver (Black) Review

Onkyo TX-NR5007 145 Watts 9.2-Channel AV Surround Home Network Receiver (Black)

I purchased the Onkyo TX-NR5007 in February 2010 to replace my Onkyo TX-SR806. Going from the 806 to the 5007 was like day and night. The sound from the 5007 is easily the best I've heard from any receiver. I work in an electronics store and I hear many units daily from the Denon AVR-4810CI and the Pioneer Elite SC-27 and they, in my opinion, can't match the Onkyo in terms of sound and features.
The new TX-NR5007 have 192kHz/32bit Burr-Brown DACs, and 4 independent power supplies for better sound. Along with those features for sound, this receiver includes the HQV Reon 1080p upscaling that even makes my HD inputs look better when compared to the Faroudja chip that was in the TX-SR806. For those interested in making the picture look even better, it's ISF certified and you can use this feature to professionally calibrate day and night picture modes for each input.
The networking features also great. I use Pandora radio a few times a week and am very happy with the quality. I had a problem setting it up though. None of the stations showed up on my internet radio until after I reset the entire receiver. This receiver can also stream music from media servers such as your PC, and it can also play music off of a USB hard drive or thumb drive.
I'm powering Klipsch XF-48's as the left and right channel, and three Klipsch XL-23's as a center channel, and left and right surrounds, along with a Definitive Technology Supercube Reference subwoofer (5.1 setup). What's surprising is that there is still room for four more speakers and one more subwoofer (9.2 setup). If you don't need a receiver that's capable of passing through 3D signals (HDMI 1.4), I would recommend that you get this receiver because I've never heard one that sounded better especially at this price point. Please make sure you can fit and carry this beast before purchasing though. It is gigantic and it weighs near 60lbs.

DynaQuip Controls WCACT1 WaterCop Actuator Review

DynaQuip Controls WCACT1 WaterCop Actuator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Living in North Idaho, I deal with cold temps that threaten to crack my pipes and I have a basement with a sump pump. I know of several homes that had thousands of dollars of damage due to a cracked pipe that later thawed and flooded the home. I installed a Valve and Actuator on my water main, leak sensors on the water heater, sump pump, washing machine, kitchen sink and dishwasher. When I have the money, I am going to add a water sensor for my fridge (water and ice machine in door) and a low temp sensor in my basement. I have tested the sensors with a puddle of water in my palm and they enter alert mode quickly and you can hear the actuator motor run as it closes the valve. All in all, I would greatly recommend this to someone who lives in cold climates or for a vacation home. I was told that it can interface with a security system as well, so that my monitoring station can call me if the WaterCop system is activated. That is one of my next projects.
Updated 3/15/2010
This was not too difficult to add to a security system, though it takes a bit of understanding of how these things work. Best to run the remote switch and a low-voltage relay into an RJ-31x with the WaterCop actuator plugged into the RJ-45. A change from the green to red LED (which indicates that the valve has closed) on the WaterCop's remote switch triggers the relay so that the connected security system zone goes into alarm/trouble state. Set the zone as 24-hr supervised. Done! With my Honeywell Vista 20P alarm panel, I set it as zone type 90 (custom) and programmed it to supervise 24/7 & only have the keypads annunciate (no need to have siren screaming at neighbors for a water leak).

Denon S302 DVD Home Theater System Review

Denon S302 DVD Home Theater System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Listed below are my thoughts on the S-302 after a week of use.
Styling
The styling is fair. This is very subjective, but the cabinet does not really look like it should cost $1700. I very much like the compact size. The controls look fine and feel solid.
Sound
I am not an audiophile, so take this with a grain of salt. I believe the quality of the sound is very good when playing music. The bass was not too deep and the highs were very clear. There was a good separation of instruments on some the jazz recordings. I tested this with various types of music using sources from CD, FM, and MP3 (VBR 165-175 kbps).
DVD
This is a 2.1 system and to me that is what it sounds like. Watching several movies, I never had the illusion of 5.1. The sound is fine, the sub-woofer did a bit too much shaking of the apartment for my tastes, but this is easily adjustable with a dedicated button on the remote. Occasionally the voices did not seem to come from the correct place on the screen. This could be due to the location of the speakers as they are at the bottom of the screen since the stands are not yet available.
The picture from the DVD is very good. I have the S-302 connected via HDMI connection to my 42" plasma, which is 1080i. The picture is extremely sharp. No noticeable jagged lines.
The memory function of the DVD does not work very well. If you stop the DVD and turn off the unit, it will remember the location when you turn it back on. If you switch to another source (e.g., tuner) and return to the DVD, it starts at the beginning of the movie. Not the menus or the FBI warnings, so it appears that it recognizes that this DVD has not been newly inserted.Internet/USB
This unit is equipped with WiFi (802.11b/g) and ethernet network capabilities. I was not able to get the wireless to work. My WPA key contains spaces and I could not figure out how to enter a space in the key. I removed the spaces from my key. I then turned off security. All of these options failed to connect. I then connected the device using a power line ethernet adapter and was able to connect. This connection is not reliable and I cannot tell if it is the adapter or the S-302. Occasionally, when starting the unit, it will try to connect using the wireless. This should occur only when the direct ethernet connection is not present.
The interface for the internet radio is easy to use. The stations are categorized by genre and country of origin. Although you can get to a station with this interface, a search feature would greatly facilitate getting to a known station. The interface for the USB is not so friendly. It is just a directory listing of the USB drive. It would be easier to navigate if it used the ID3 information to group by artist, album, genre, etc.
Tuner
While the quality of the sound from the tuner is very good, tuning of stations is very frustrating. There are three modes. FM Auto, FM Mono, and AM. When in FM Auto, the unit will not let you enter a weak station. Direct input of the station results in no sound whatsoever. Switching to FM Mono, the station can be entered and listened to. Entering a preset for this will remember which mode it is in, so this is necessary only once. Also, in the FM Auto mode, if a station starts to fade, it just goes out. It is either tuned or not tuned, so it can just keep cutting out. I would rather have static, but to do that I would have to use the FM Mono for all of my stations.

CHANNEL PLUS MDS-6A KIT 2 6 Source Multi-room Music Distribution Kit #2 Review

CHANNEL PLUS MDS-6A KIT 2 6 Source Multi-room Music Distribution Kit #2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We spent about a year remodeling our place and researching the whole house music system so that we could have music in each room. We finally settled on the MDS-6a - it was a major decision - $1,100 is a lot of money.
When you get the system, it comes with a small (and I do mean small) manual with oversize print and oversize pictures. We are pretty tech savy - but it was no fun deciphering the manual. Going onto Channel Plus' website (the maker) was no help.
Finally, we got it hooked up...and no music. We then tried wiring it a couple of different ways - different from the manual - and now we have music. Okay, frustration over.
Okay, time to change the channel on the satellite radio. We thought the keypads could do something simple like change the channel on the satellite radio. I mean, come on, the system came with IR transmitters and cost over a grand. Nope - can't do it. The keypads WILL pass through the commands from our one satellite radio remote - but the keypads that we wired and installed in every room...well, Channel Plus tech support said that if we'd bought the system with the "2A" keypads we'd be able to control the radio....
Well, learn from our mistake. There's just not enough info presented on Amazon's website to make an intelligent decision about buying this equipment. We think that there must be a cheaper and better way to have music throughout the house - seeing as how the keypads can't even change the channel...

It's a good phone, has good solid body and a easy to use built in keyboard, the only issue that I have found at the moment which I don't feel it is going to last is the "Z" mecanism for open / closing the phone. So far with the use I had give it it's loosing its consistence and the screen is more loose rather than conserving its tight to the panel.
Other than that it is great I'm happy with my new phone, the software is OK but talking about HTC Likes lacks of software reviews and features, but that's not a problem if you use Android Marked instead.

Yamaha MCX-2000 MusicCAST Digital Audio Server Review

Yamaha MCX-2000 MusicCAST Digital Audio Server
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Easy setup, easy to store music. Nice to be able to pack away almost 200 CDs. Only problem is I wish the hard drive was bigger.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Yamaha MCX-2000 MusicCAST Digital Audio Server

One of the most persistent challenges of setting up a modern digital audio system is integrating all the various formats and components. Half your music collection may be stored on CD, while the rest is spread between vinyl, MP3, and other formats. That's where the Yamaha MCX-2000 MusicCAST digital audio server comes into play. Not only does the MusicCAST server store up to 40,000 songs on its built-in 160 GB hard drive--making it easy to access your favorite tunes at a moment's notice--but it also converts vinyl records into digital formats while playing XM satellite and Internet radio streams. In short, the MCX-2000 serves as an all-in-one music management system, letting every family member listen to what they want, when they want, at the touch of a button.
Once the server is loaded with music, the MusicCAST system can communicate with up to 15 separate clients--five wirelessly and 10 wired--to play music throughout the house on virtually any type of speaker system. Want to play music on the bedroom or garage speakers without running speaker wire throughout the house? Integrate the server with a MusicCAST MCX-A10 wireless client and a couple of speaker pairs. The full system will give you full access to the server's massive audio catalogue from anywhere in the home. No more installing a portable boombox in the kitchen or settling for certain CDs because your bedroom system doesn't play MP3s. The MusicCAST system--which is essentially a 16-zone multi-room audio warehouse--does it all.
Music storage is really the MCX-2000's specialty, however. The device includes a CD slot that easily uploads songs to the hard drive in their original quality (around 200 hours worth), or converts them to compressed MP3 files (at 160k, 256k, or 320k compression rates) for distribution to the clients. Listeners can also upload songs via external inputs, such as iPods, PCs, and even turntables. Once the songs are loaded, you can stack your CDs and LPs in the closet never to be heard from again, and spend your newfound free time creating tons of versatile playlists for special occasions, parties, or just to meet your mood. And as with traditional CD players and MP3 players, the MCX-2000 offers a host of other playback options, including old standbys random play and repeat play.
The MusicCAST's radio support extends from FM frequencies to Internet streaming to XM-ready capability. To enjoy the full complement of XM satellite radio stations, listeners will need an XM antenna (sold separately) and a subscription to the service. The Internet streaming, however, is instantly available to anyone who connects the MCX-2000 to the Internet, whether through a wired or wireless connection. The server comes preconfigured with five radio URLs, and it's easy to add others to the list.
As an added bonus, the server can also play back music files from a PC that offers Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) compatibility. In other words, PC users won't have to transfer all their MP3, WMA, or other files to the MCX-2000 to enjoy playback through the system. This is especially gratifying for hardcore music fans for whom a 160 GB hard drive just isn't big enough.
File navigation and organization is straightforward and user-friendly thanks to the system's efficient graphical user interface and remote control, which let you quickly scan through artist, album, track, and genre menus gleaned from the CDDB music recognition database. And listeners who won't stand to let a good playlist go to waste will dig the built-in CD recorder, which transfers music at a lightning fast speed to CD for later playback on a car stereo or a friend's system.
Jacks include a wireless IEEE 802.11b/g network protocol for communicating with wireless clients, an Ethernet connection for wired client or Internet hookups, analog and Toslink digital audio inputs and outputs, S-video and composite video outputs for onscreen displays, a PS/2 connection port for connecting a keyboard, and a headphone jack with its own level control.
The MCX-2000 measures 17.12 by 3.75 by 16.06 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a one-year warranty.
What's in the Box MCX-2000 server, remote control, power cord, user's manual.

IDA-X100M Alpine MARINE Multimedia Head-unit with USB and iPod Control Review

IDA-X100M Alpine MARINE Multimedia Head-unit with USB and iPod Control
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I received the IDA-X100m for installation into a 180 Bowrider (2000 Crownline). My boat came with a cassette deck (what they didn't have CDs in 2k??), so obviously it was going to have to go away.
I recently purchased a Pioneer MVH-P8200 for my RV about 2 weeks previous. That deck is also a AV receiver with Iphone integration and without a CD player. Since all of my media is digital, I had become used to having to burn CDs for use in the car which was both a waste of time and money but easy enough. That being said, this generation of decks which provides support for digital only is the future and is perfect for customers like me. So my Pioneer is a similar unit, large display with a single control wheel and advanced Ipod integration - no CD player wanted or included. (I have a iPhone 4). Nice deck, less expensive than the Alpine and a good fit for the type of usage it will get in the RV and advantage to the Pioneer for also having front mounted USB and aux inputs. Thats nice and the only advantage over the Alpine (other than being 100$ cheaper) however I do wish if I had it to do over again, I would rather have the Alpine instead:
So that out of the way, now looking at Marine models, I actually started my research slightly backwards because I knew I wanted a transom remote control, I considered how those looked and performed from Kenwood, Pioneer, Sony and Alpine, and the Alpine Remote Commanders are by far superior in terms of display, water proofing and functionality. That led me to the Alpine Marine Decks, and thus to the IDA-X100M. I was first struck by the ergonomics of the unit. One of the things I did not like about the Pioneer deck is that the control wheel isn't quite large enough which makes it tough to use to navigate. The Alpine knob is oversize, easy to grasp and the navigation makes sense. I have no problem operating it while driving the boat. Its easy to use and operate. The display is great and the illumination sharp. Connecting to my iPhone was simple and easy just as it should be, and I found the navigation of my music libraries was simple and intuitive. Unit came with everything I needed to install and since my boat only had 1 pair of speakers, I choose to use the internal amp for those and as expected was a huge improvement over its replacement and plenty of power. I have a external 1000w mono Fosgate Amp connected to a T1D12 sub woofer and the dedicated sub woofer RCAs (and control) made connecting it a breeze. Obviously there are also RCA outs for additional front/rear as well. Sound quality is typical Alpine - sounds great. FM radio seem sensitive, sounds good.
High WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor). Wife loves the look, found it easy to browse and find the music she wanted without having to read the instructions which is important. I have not yet hooked up the Marine Commander, but am anticipating from watching the demo videos that it will be awesome. I don't anticipate watching videos on the small screen, but appreciate having the option, as well as satellite radio, HD radio and the other add on components available. I like being able to use other USB storage including SD/MMC cards, however apparently unable to display the album artwork (why not?) is a downer. You only get that when connected to your ipod/iphone. Not a big deal to me, as I will always have my phone with me anyways, and I also appreciate that the ringer and email/text notification sounds come through the speakers so I don't miss calls when the music is pumping. I dont have the optional bluetooth. For me that is a must have in a car, but on the water, mic integration and ambient noise make it a non starter as well as my desire to have fun, not be on the phone in the water. I do however want to at least know I am getting a call/txt/email so if its important I can return the call.
Highly recommended for anyone wanting to go pure digital.

Yamaha RX-A700 7.1-Channel Audio/Video Receiver (Black) Review

Yamaha RX-A700 7.1-Channel Audio/Video Receiver (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've owned a Yamaha RX-V2095 for the past 12 years. Weighing in at 45 lbs it's an understatement that it has some power. The only thing it lacked was HDMI capability, which is why I upgraded to the RX-A700. The sound fields are more precise with having the 7.1 surround. Memo to those of you upgrading, this unit has a built in secondary amp for zone 2 (too cool). But be aware you can only play analog signals through zone 2, so be sure to hook up the analog cables along with all the HDMI ones. That was fun figuring out! The YPAO feature is awesome. It's a tiny microphone that plugs into the front of the amp and it automatically sets the level of your speakers based on where they are placed. The process takes about 3 minutes and is very high tech. Adjusting the levels yourself is fun with the cool interactive menu's in this new model. The remote seems too simple when you first start using it, but when you figure out the ease and user friendly menu system built in, it makes you even more satisfied with the product. The models above this one are the A800, 1000 and 3000. The only difference is a little more power and more [outdated] hookups like s-video and analogs.
Another great feature is the 12 pin hookup for the optional Ipod cradle specifically made for this model. The cradle is about 90 bucks (yds-12) and has great on screen capability with up to date ipods (3rd gen I-touch). You can even watch the digital movies on your you TV with this thing.
All in all, this is a great buy. I will miss my old receiver, but this one is a no brainer, especially for Yamaha enthusiasts. Hope this helps.
Danny

Denon AVR1910 7.1-Channel Multi-Zone Home Theater Receiver with 1080p HDMI Connectivity Review

Denon AVR1910 7.1-Channel Multi-Zone Home Theater Receiver with 1080p HDMI Connectivity
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Last year I spent several months trying various A/V receivers when I upgraded to bluray and a new plasma TV. I tried an Onkyo 606, Denon 988, and a Yamaha 663 and ultimately ended up with the Yamaha RX-V663 as I felt it gave the best performance for the money. I decided to switch to a different receiver after I changed my home theater setup and began to route everything to the tv via 1 HDMI cable. The Yamaha's video processing on HDMI sources was fine, but other analog sources were seriously degraded when converted to digital. So my search began again.
After many months of research at various forums and websites, here were my conclusions about the new 2009 models:
1. Yamaha 665 added extra HDMI inputs and video upscaling which is good but also cut weight by about 8 lbs mainly from the amplifier which means less output and clean sound.
2. Onkyo 607 is mainly the same as last year's, with an extra HDMI for a total of 5 inputs. Added Dolby Prologic II Z which is more of a gimmick than useful from what I have read. Still runs very hot and has same poor video processing chip. Questionable reliability.
3. Harman Kardon was the brand I owned before my Yamaha and I really love them, but last year had excessive amounts of glitches with video and audio compatibility. Most have been corrected buy I'm not willing to take that chance as of yet.
4. Pioneer makes a nice unit in the 1018 last year, but this year the 1019 has been cut drastically in weight too. Power amp has been cut down to lower levels. Nice GUI and ipod compatibility built in, but a little weak in the power section.
5. Sony. Never really been fond of Sony receivers in the past. ES series is nice, but pricey. I personally never even considered anything below the ES line.
And that brings us to the 1910:
I am flat out blown away by this receiver. The main reason I wanted it was for the Audyssey processing. The only thing I was in love with on the Onkyo 606 I tried out was the Audyssey dynamic EQ. The 988 I demoed did not have it but the 1910 does and it is worth every penny. I have 2 small kids and even though my theater room is 2 floors below, I obviously can't listen at reference volumes. Audyssey dynamic EQ along with Dynamic Volume is a knockout combo. The bass response and sound from the rears is jaw dropping at lower levels. I would pay much, much more just for this feature. Last night I listened to Goo Goo Dolls live from Buffalo DVD and I heard things I never heard in the mix before. Every strum on the guitar and bass line was alive and distinct. Drums thumped and vocals were crystal clear. I also watched Live Free or Die Hard on bluray (thanks Amazon for the lightning deal!!) and the surround effect at -35db on the volume was nothing short of spectacular. Speaking of spectacular, the Audyssey auto setup nailed everything perfectly. I have a 6.1 Jamo surround setup consisting of 4 matched satellites, a larger center, and a smaller rear center. The 1910 has independent crossover levels for each speaker, unlike my Yammy which was one global setting. The crossovers were dead on for each of the 3 different speakers. Levels and EQ settings were perfect. My room is 18 x 22 and my wife even commented how on the other side of the room not in the sweet spot for listening, the sound was much better than before. I am running all 6 ohm speakers and this thing seems to have plenty of power for my room size.
The 1910 has the Anchor Bay scaling chip this year instead of the Faroujda chip last years 1909 had and from what I have seen so far, it handles component to HDMI signals with no problems.
I always thought Denon was overpriced and over hyped after trying the 988. With the added Audyssey features and half the price, this 1910 is the deal of the century. The only drawbacks are:
1. Poor remote. I have a Harmony One so it' not much of an issue for me.
2. Confusing at times. I have quite a bit of experience setting up home theater equipment so I made it through OK, but I did have to hit the manual several times which is poorly written. A trip to the AVS forums has a section specifically for Denon setup and can really help newbies.
3. No GUI. This receiver has the blocky white on black on screen display. It really was not much of an issue for me. Others may care.
4. No pre-outs. I have no need for an external amp. Others might.
Bottom line is that for the money, this receiver has all the pros and very few cons. I thought my Yamaha sounded natural, clean, and extremely lifelike. This Denon has me floored in comparison. Makes everything else seem dull and lifeless. If you have some electronic knowledge, don't hesitate. 4 HDMIs, HD audio, full Audyssey suite, Anchor Bay chip, and a great power section makes this thing a knockout!!

AVR-1910 is packed with technology and features making it the clear choice for value oriented consumers looking for exceptional performance. Each of its 7-amplifier channels produce 90 watts of power, delivering detail and dynamics to music and movie soundtracks. They can be configured for 7.1 channel surround sound, or drive a 5.1 channel system in the main room and power a pair of speakers in a second 'zone". It's equipped with 1080p compatible HDMI 1.3a Repeating technology, delivering both audio and video to your HDTV with single HDMI cable. This HDMI connectivity supports the latest generation surround sound formats available on Blu-ray disc, including Dolby TrueHD and DD+, dts-HD and dts-HR. Also included is Dolby Laboratories new Pro Logic IIz Matrix decoding featuring front height effects channels that expands front soundstage. The AVR1910 boast a number of Audyssey technologies. Advanced Audyssey MultEQ analyzes a speaker systems interaction with room acoustics, and then delivers custom tailored correction processing to optimize clarity and tonal balance throughout the listening space. Audyssey Dynamic Volume is an automatic volume-leveling system that tracks audio dynamics to eliminate the irritating volume swings between TV shows and commercials. Audyssey Dynamic EQ is also on board to ensure rich bass and smooth tonal balance at low volume listening levels. In addition to enhanced HDMI 1.3a repeating (4 in, 1 out), the AVR1910 is the least expensive receiver in the Denon lineup to feature 1080p i/p conversion, analog to HDMI upscaling and HDMI to HDMI scaling. Video conversion is accomplished using a premium Anchor Bay Technologies 1030 chip set featuring 10-bit processing. The AVR1910 also features component video switching (2 in, 1 out), seven analog inputs, and multi-zone (2)/multi-source (2) capability. A front-panel audio/video input allows quick and easy connection of camcorders and game systems.

Denon AVR-2808CI 7.1-Channel Multizone Home Theater Receiver Review

Denon AVR-2808CI 7.1-Channel Multizone Home Theater Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've owned a few receivers in the past (mostly Sony ES models), but none of them compare to this one. Denon specializes in audio, and it shows! Don't get me wrong, I love and own alot of Sony's products (two TVs, PS3, Vaio computer, DVD player, etc.), but after picking up this Denon and pairing it with a Polk speaker/sub setup, I've never been happier, and the upgrade from the Sony ES it replaced is substantial in many ways.
Denon AVR-2808ci Pros:
-Sound quality is absolutely incredible! Even compressed music from iPod is great ("Restorer" feature really helps!). Highs, mids and lows are all accurately reproduced, and there are tons of custom EQ options!
-Audyssey Auto-Calibration is accurate and thorough.
-Includes decoding of all current and future sound-fields (DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD, as well as Uncompressed PCM and everything else you can imagine, all via HDMI version 1.3a)!
-Display is large and includes alot of necessary info-this thing tells you what it's doing.
-Solid build quality and nice looking!
-Connectivity options (HDMI, toslink, digital coax, component video, s-video, etc.)
-Video upconversion via HDMI using built-in Faroudja DCDi processor, or just passthrough and use as a convenient HDMI switcher (assignable inputs).
-Excellent sound processors, both for movies and music, complement a solid, beefy amplifier.
-Customizable as all heck: 4-stage dimmer, "Quick Select" feature for three sources, learning lcd remote, volume level options, mute level options, default settings per-source, massive amount of EQ/channel level/crossover settings, and more!
-Main remote works great, learns and controls just about all of your gear.
This receiver is truly great for anybody who is serious about their Home Audio/Home Theater. The only drawbacks are that it is very complex, which is fine except that Denon doesn't make it any simpler to understand in the manual. It definitely takes some time to set this thing up and learn its interface. The Sony's I've owned in the past were far more user-friendly from the initial set-up/calibration onward. However, they never delivered results that were even close to this unit, and once you learn it, it does make sense and is relatively user-friendly after setup.
Cons:
-Complex manual and interface takes time to learn.
-On Screen Menu lags a little and blacks out picture rather than a nice overlay. Also, it's not the better looking, more user friendly GUI that more expensive models have (as well as all Sony's).
-Smaller secondary remote only works for other Zones (not a big deal really, but still...)
-Main remote takes forever to program/set up for universal usage. complicated.
-Only two HDMI inputs (could've used at least one more at this price range).
-No HD radio or Sirius support (does have XM).
Overall, minor gripes aside (nothing's ever perfect), I'm incredibly pleased and excited to own this unit and have it as the central hub to my Home Theater. I have Blu-ray now (PS3) and the advantages and options both now and in the future are vast. I'm confident that the Denon AVR-2808ci will allow me to take full advantage of that and other things for years to come. Mostly, though, it just cranks out amazingly good audio from any source, and that is ultimately what receivers are for. Highly recommended!

Sennheiser MD421II Dynamic Microphone Review

Sennheiser MD421II Dynamic Microphone
Average Reviews:

This is the microphone that sometimes plays
second fiddle in radio stations to the reknown
reigning king of Radio Dynamic mics - the
ElectroVoice ..
I own a dozen very expensive condenser
microphones ranging in the 500 - 3000 dollar range
from AKG, Neumann, Studio Projects, Shure,
Electrovoice and many more ..
but the one microphone, I find myself constantly
reaching for ... especially when using it with web
audio projects which I have to compress and still
retain clarity ... as well as presence ..
It's this time proven German tradition that hasn't
changed much in it's 50 years of production...
And .. unlike the problems with a condenser
microphone where your recording area has to be sound
deadened .. my office is located in an active construction
zone (Ground Zero NYC) ..
The Sennheiser mic beautifully cancels out
the police and fire engine sirens, hydraulic drills
and constant construction pile driving here which
rule out using my other microphones.
My particular mic is over 20 years old and
still used on a daily basis ..
These mics are truly versatile performers and
have earned their reputation as reliable workhorses
that produce a phenomenal and unique sound.

HTC 99HJY009-00 HD2 Unlocked Phone with Windows Mobile 6.5 Professional, Touch Screen, 5MP Camera, GPS and Wi-Fi- No Warranty - Black Review

HTC 99HJY009-00 HD2 Unlocked Phone with Windows Mobile 6.5 Professional, Touch Screen, 5MP Camera, GPS and Wi-Fi- No Warranty - Black

(More customer reviews)
As an avid user of smartphones, for years I've completely ignored a series of dull, uncreative phones running windows. While a variety of hardware form factors, some even technically superior to the competition, have come out, the software continued to look incredibly boring compared to the iPhone, Android, and even Blackberry. The main selling points consisted of "It runs windows and has a start button like you're used to on a computer" and "We have Office and sync with Outlook!". While these may have appealed to some business customers, the consistently shrinking market share of Windows phones demonstrated their lack of appeal to consumers as the recent smartphone boom hit.
With the HD2 this trend may finally be coming to an end. In conjunction with HTCs beautiful Sense interface, some aggressive hardware, and some genuine innovations, the HD2 is a Windows phone I can actually use and recommend. Let's start with the pros and follow up with a few drawbacks.
**Hardware**
-The 1ghz Snapdragon processor coupled with 448mb of ram is blazing fast. This is the fastest speed in a phone currently available. The HD2 loads everything quickly, and can run multiple apps at the same time. You can feel how fast the phone runs by playing with it for a few minutes. Gone are the sluggish Windows Phones of old, constantly running out of memory and crashing. The HD2 is fast and has top notch hardware and you can feel it.
-The screen is huge: 4.3 inches and stretching from corner to corner. The Resolution at 800x480 pixels means you'll see much more on that big screen than average. That means more room for icons and that sexy weather display on the main screen.
-The HD2 supports 3g on T-mobile, including the upcoming higher speed 3g. This means the fastest downloads and best call quality available. Note: the phone does NOT have ATTs 3g bands and the 3g will not work if you're using it unlocked on ATT.
-5mp camera with auto focus and 2 LEDs. 5mp is the highest we see on most phones, and the camera looks great. Having not 1 but 2 LEDs for flash seems a bit silly but works well. The phone even comes standard with a little flashlight app for a blindingly bright way to see in the dark.
-Included 3.5mm jack - this is becoming standard on most phones, and it's great to see it on the HD2. This allows you to use standard headphones without an adapter when playing music or listening to the built in FM Radio.
-Included wifi, bluetooth, and a hardware (real) GPS for turn by turn directions round out all the bells and whistles included in the phone.
-Battery life is similar to most smartphones. You will easily get a day's use without having to charge, but most likely you'll have to plug it in at night.
**Interface**
-HTC Sense is what really makes the phone shine here. This part of the software is done by HTC, not Windows, and runs on top of standard Windows Mobile 6.5 professional. HTC Sense expands on the previous TouchFLO 3d interface and enhances the way customers interact with the phone. Sense creates the beautiful Today screen, animations for messages, social networking features. It also lets you interact with the phone in unique ways, such as pinching to zoom. Some of these features are so close to the iPhone that Apple has recently filed lawsuits against HTC.
-The home screen is customizable, though not quite to the extent of Android phones. It lets you place a few apps on the screen, along with a beautiful standard weather app that detects your phone's location and shows the current time and weather in your city.
-Touch is a much better experience on this phone than previous windows mobile phones. The screen is capacitive, meaning it uses touch instead of pressure. No awkward stylus or pushing is needed for the touch to work. The phone responds quickly and smoothly to any motions.
-Basic phone features like placing a call or sending a text remain simple, with big buttons on the main screen to do so.
-Typing on the touchscreen is a breeze due to the size of the screen allowing for a bigger keyboard. As someone who has often stuck to phones with hardware keyboards due to inaccurate screen keyboards, I found typing on the HD2 much easier than previous touchscreen keyboards, although still not as easy as using a hardware keyboard. The HD2 also includes the new SWYPE interface, which lets you type by dragging your fingers through all the letters of a word instead of tapping each one. SWYPE was surprisingly accurate in typing the correct word and will even learn new words once you type them manually.
**Included Apps and Accessories**
-This phone is being marketed as a media phone, and includes several media apps to demonstrate that. MobiTV lets you watch what is essentially Cable TV on your phone free for 30 days and then ten dollars a month after that. Blockbuster lets you rent or buy movies for your phone. Barnes and Noble eReader lets you purchase ebooks.
-The phone comes with a huge 16gb MicroSD card out of the box. This is the biggest memory card available currently, and gives you plenty of room for pictures, videos, music, and apps. The best memory card pairs perfectly with the best processor and screen, and it's great that HTC did not hold back on this extra.
-Full videos of Transformers 1 and 2 are preloaded on the memory card. These videos look great and show off the beautiful screen. Note the movies do take about 4gb of space on the memory card.
-The phone comes with a gel skin in the box to protect the phone, which you would have to buy separately on most phones.
**'Drawbacks**
-Price is the number one concern here. The phone is priced higher than competing smartphones. This price seems justified, however, due to the cutting edge hardware in the HD2. It also comes with some nice accessories you'd have to buy separately from other phones. Upgrade and new customer deals will certainly lower the cost for those buying from T-mobile.
-The app store is another drawback. The good news is that the phone has one, the bad news is it's the smallest of ANY smartphone operating system. As of this review the Windows Marketplace carried less than 1,000 applications, compared to Android at 20,000 apps and iPhone at a staggering 150,000 apps. Even Blackberry, Palm, and Nokia carry more apps than Windows. You are also going to find significantly more paid than free applications for Windows Mobile apps. The Marketplace is simply far behind that of competing phones, which for a heavy app user will diminish the enjoyment of the HD2 by quite a bit.
-Windows Mobile 7 upgradeability is still up in the air, but it currently looks like this phone will NOT be getting an upgrade when the new OS is released. The phone does not support some key hardware feature (front buttons) that WM7 requires, and therefore it is unlikely to be upgraded. The upcoming OS promises to be very exciting, and the fact that this beautiful phone will probably not receive the upgrade is disappointing.
Overall this phone is fast, pretty, and offers top of the line features. The phone feels solid (and huge) in your hand, while the software is fast, works well and is fun to use. If the HD2 is any indicator, Windows Mobile may become a legitimate competitor in the smartphone market again. The phone seems to be selling very well, with T-mobile selling out almost everywhere the day the HD2 was released. I'd recommend this phone as a viable alternative to Android and the iPhone.

This unit does work with blackberrys (I have been using it for calls all week with great results). I was worried about the unit because of other reviews, however I decided to bite the bullet and try it. I am glad I did, it works like a champ! When using a Blackberry, it will not store your phone book, or allow voice dialing, or transfer music, etc, however I knew that going in. I just needed a unit to allow high quality hands free operation and be xm ready. I have been very happy with it.
It took me about 2 hours to install it with xm radio adapter. I have a 2008 equinox and bought the harness and kit through Crutchfield.
So if you have a blackberry, don't get scared off of this one.
